SAVIGNANO SUL RUBICONE The territory of Emilia-Romagna consists of a wide plain south of the Po river and the Appennine mountains run from north to east. PROVINCES: Bologna, Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Ferrara, Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena (our province) and Rimini. SAVIGNANO SUL RUBICONE The territory of the city lies on the two sides of the river Rubicone. The town symbol represents the Roman bridge with three arches with the famous phrase:”ALEA IACTA EST”(the dice is thrown). SAVIGNANO SUL RUBICONE Belongs to the province of Forlì - Cesena. It has a population of 14.786 inhabitans (Savignano) and a surface of 23,2 square kilometers. The Rubicon (in Italian Rubicone) is an ancient Latin name for a small river in Romagna. During Roman times it flowed into the Adriatic sea between Ariminium and Caesena. The river was considered to mark the boundary between the Roman province of Cisalpine Gaul to the north and Italy proper to the south; the boundry thus protected the Republic from internal military threat. When Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49 BC , to make his way to Rome, he broke that law and made armed comflict inevitable. According to Suetonius he uttered the famous phrase alea iacta est (“the dice is cast”). THE ROMAN BRIGE OVER THE RUBICONE THE RUBICON RIVER The Roman brige was built when the Consol Marco Milio Lepido traced the route of Via Emilia. LIBRARY AND ACCADEMY OF FILOPATRIDI In to Sec. XVI and XVIII in the Savignano there were 2 libraries: one town library and one Accademic Library. THE CASTLE OF RIBANO On the hills above the town there is the Castel of Ribano, on the main route from Savignano sul Rubicone to Sogliano al Rubicone. During the French Revolution, Giocchino Rasponi, captured the Castel of Ribano. Piadina romagnola is an unleavened type of bread boasting very ancient origins. Originally, it was cooked on a stone which has now been replaced by the iron frying pan. Piadina is the symbol of our regional gastronomy and should be eaten like a sandwich filled with local cold cuts & cheese such as Parma Ham or squacquerone. Savignano also stretches its territory to the magnificent Adriatic sea coast, with hotels and seaside establishments, and endless amusement parks for all ages. JULIUS CAESAR MIDDLE SCHOOL Our school, named after the Roman emperor Julius Caesar, is located in the centre of Savignano. The school has more than 400 students. SAVIGNANO SUL RUBICONE .
