Scientific investigation has proved this fear to be unfounded. Fluoride is found in the natural water supply of many communities. The amounts vary from less than one part per million of fluoride to known quantities of eight parts per million and more. In sufficient amounts anything can be a poison. A recent report was made on the medical aspects of a community with a high degree of sodium fluoride content in the water, eight times the recommended amount. The effects appear to be confined chiefly to a mottling of the teeth, increased density in the spinal and pelvic bones, a certain brittleness and blotching of the fingernails, and clouding of the lens in the eye. However, it should be noted that people living in this community appear little concerned over such effects, and otherwise show no unusual reactions. Mottled tooth enamel is the best index of too much fluorine. It will show up in areas where the drinking water contains two parts per million or more. In such populations there is no other known toxic effect of fluorine. The mottling effect can be produced only during the years that the teeth are developing. Once teeth have come through the gums, enamel mottling cannot occur. The mottling occurs in direct proportion to the fluoride intake, and so is a measure for scientists to determine the safety of the dosage. If no mottling

occurs, the dosage may be regarded as entirely safe UNITED STATES PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE for continued use. MODERN equipment for processing drinking water promises you purity.

I have known plenty of people who lived to a ripe old age, yet they smoked heavily most of their lives." Well, so have we all. And this proves precisely noth- FIRST ing, except perhaps that such people are unusually tough. 24 LIFE & HEALTH From this breakdown we see that there were about 50 per cent more survivors at seventy among the nonusers of tobacco than among the heavy smokers. The heavy smoker has only about two chances of reaching sixty to the nonsmoker's three. About 37 per cent of heavy smokers' deaths between the ages of thirty and sixty could have been postponed if they had not smoked. Such facts cannot be disregarded. How does tobacco kill?
