  • How to Sleep Warm Whether You're at Home Or out in the Wilds, a Good Night's Rest Is Important
How to Sleep Warm Whether you're at home or out in the wilds, a good night's rest is important. Here are some tips to help you sleep snug as a bug in a rug! Each person needs to bring an insulated sleeping pad or cot or blow-up mattress, 2 blankets, preferably wool (polarfleece is ok too), their sleeping bag and pillow. Assemble sleeping gear in the following order: cot (or pad/mattress closest to ground), then warmest blanket, sleeping bag on top of blanket, and blanket #2 on top of all. Strip down to the buff before bedtime and put on all new clothing, including pajamas, sleeping socks, underwear, and sleeping hat. Do not layer clothing as this restricts the amount of warmth the sleeping bag can absorb from your body and prevents it from doing its job. It is okay to put a slumber bag or blanket inside the sleeping bag but slumber bags should not be used in lieu of a sleeping bag. Note: If your feet get cold at any time while camping try changing your socks. Feet get cold due to condensation build up from sweating, and changing socks ensures they are dry and will warm you right up. If a sleeping bag is inadequate or if you do not have extra blankets, the sleeping bag can be put inside a plastic trash bag. Be sure to remove this bag immediately in the morning or the bag will build up too much condensation and get damp. Do not unroll your bag until you are ready to get into it (unless it is down) and re-roll it as soon as you get up in the morning.

  • Identification of Asian Garments in Small Museums
AN ABSTRACTOF THE THESIS OF Alison E. Kondo for the degree ofMaster ofScience in Apparel Interiors, Housing and Merchandising presented on June 7, 2000. Title: Identification ofAsian Garments in Small Museums. Redacted for privacy Abstract approved: Elaine Pedersen The frequent misidentification ofAsian garments in small museum collections indicated the need for a garment identification system specifically for use in differentiating the various forms ofAsian clothing. The decision tree system proposed in this thesis is intended to provide an instrument to distinguish the clothing styles ofJapan, China, Korea, Tibet, and northern Nepal which are found most frequently in museum clothing collections. The first step ofthe decision tree uses the shape ofthe neckline to distinguish the garment's country oforigin. The second step ofthe decision tree uses the sleeve shape to determine factors such as the gender and marital status ofthe wearer, and the formality level ofthe garment. The decision tree instrument was tested with a sample population of 10 undergraduates representing volunteer docents and 4 graduate students representing curators ofa small museum. The subjects were asked to determine the country oforigin, the original wearer's gender and marital status, and the garment's formality and function, as appropriate. The test was successful in identifying the country oforigin ofall 12 Asian garments and had less successful results for the remaining variables. Copyright by Alison E. • Analysis of Japanese and Finnish Furniture
University of Lapland, Faculty of Art and Design Name of the Pro gradu thesis: ANALYSIS OF JAPANESE AND FINNISH FURNITURE DESIGN: A consideration for product identity and the relativity of industrial development and cultural context Writer: Akiko Nakatani Degree programme: Industrial Design Type of the work: Pro gradu thesis Number of pages: 97 pages, 3 attachments Year: Spring 2011 Summary In a globalized product design market, firms take national identity into consideration to survive among the competitors, because a particular identifying feature can be the decision making factor for customers to buy a particular product. In such a situation, you may realize something as “Japanese-like” or “Finnish-like” in designs as you hold the product in your hand. But why do you think like that? The aim of this study is to clarify the factors that characterize these ideas, in terms of furniture design, with a focus on industrial development and the cultural contexts of Japan and Finland. The study is twofold, with a theoretical framework and an empirical framework. The theoretical analysis works with cultural industrial context and also argues that the transition of industrial development significantly affects national product design orientation and helps characterize products. The empirical analysis works with questionnaires concerning product image. The results conceptualize cultural references in both Japanese and Finnish furniture design. However, the results also present the realistic difficulty of recognizing products. The paper concludes by arguing that factors affecting customer’s decision making are also influenced by not only product design but the socio-culture they belong to. Therefore, measuring product image is not the only way to define national product identity, and the image is formed by both customers and product design factors.

Over centuries it became a platform that has hosted all facets of life for generations of Japanese. From palaces to houses, from temples to spaces for martial art, the tatami has served as support element for life.
