FAHRENHEIT 451: The temperature at which book-paper catches fire and burns PART I: THE HEARTH AND THE SALAMANDER IT WAS A PLEASURE TO BURN. IT was a special pleasure to see things eaten, to see things blackened and changed. With the brass nozzle in his fists, with this great python spitting its venomous kerosene upon the world, the blood pounded in his head, and his hands were the hands of some amazing conductor playing all the symphonies of blazing and burning to bring down the tatters and charcoal ruins of history. With his symbolic helmet numbered 451 on his stolid head, and his eyes all orange flame with the thought of what came next, he flicked the igniter and the house jumped up in a gorging fire that burned the evening sky red and yellow and black. He strode in a swarm of fireflies. He wanted above all, like the old joke, to shove a marshmallow on a stick in the furnace, while the flapping pigeon- winged books died on the porch and lawn of the house. While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning. Montag grinned the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flame. He knew that when he returned to the firehouse, he might wink at himself, a minstrel man, Does% burntcorked, in the mirror. Later, going to sleep, he would feel the fiery smile still gripped by his Montag% face muscles, in the dark.

Developing a Biblical Mind: Equipping Students for the Marketplace of Ideas Darrell Furgason any Christian students are unpre- pared for the philosophies, ideas, Mand paradigms they en- counter in today’s Western univer- sities and society. Philosophies like humanism, postmodernism, environmentalism, and genetic determinism continue to domi- nate the culture, causing many to abandon their Christian faith as they become converted intellectually to these and other worldviews. As Christian educators, we cannot continue to observe this situation with indifference. It is imperative that we train our students to think biblically, which means that students should (a) learn to love God with all their minds descriptions such as the following that refer to the possible (Mark 12:30), (b) understand the times in which we live conditions of the human mind: (1 Chronicles 12:32), and (c) develop a truly biblical per- • Futile (Romans 1:21, NASB) spective on every area of life and study. • Hardened (2 Corinthians 3:14, NASB) • Blinded (2 Corinthians 4:4, NASB) • Hostile (Colossians 1:21, NASB) The Mind in Focus • Fleshly (Colossians 2:18, NASB) • Depraved (1 Timothy 6:5, NASB) Why should we think? Chronobiology with Katherine Hatcher Ologies Podcast December 10, 2019 Oh hey, it’s your invisible aligners you don’t wear anywhere near 22 hours a day, and they know it, and you know it, Alie Ward, back with another episode of Ologies. I’m alive, y’all! I slept so many hours over the last couple of weeks dealing with this flu… Whooo! When are you listening to this? Are you turning the coffee pot on and feeding the dog? Are you on the 7am train to work? Is it your lunch break and you have half a burrito spinning slowly in a microwave? Maybe the sun is setting while you walk to your car. Are you nursing a human who has decided to snack on your boobage at 4am? At least once a day it seems we look at a clock and we’re cranky about it. Myself, very much so, all the time. So, we are here to talk about why. But first, we’re going to talk about you, saying thank you so much for supporting via Patreon.com/Ologies, for sending in your questions that way, for wearing Ologies shirts and hats from OlogiesMerch.com – we have some great new designs up by the by – and for telling friends, and maybe foes, and in-laws about Ologies, and keeping it up in the charts by rating it and subscribing on all of your devices. And of course for leaving a review; you know I’m gonna lurk them, just like a gentle, happy, creep so I can read one back to you.

Creativity How often can a person come up with wrong ideas and still be considered creative? To what extent can creative people have habits and rituals? Is there a difference between the kind of creativity that allows you to think outside yourself, and the kind that allows you to think like someone (or some thing) else? Are creative people virtuosos in the sense of masters of the violin, or in the sense of jack-of-all- trades, master of none? How important is faith to creativity? How about trust? Do creative people have to know themselves, as the Delphic oracle asserted? Is creativity mostly about the ideas, or about the execution of those ideas? Why do people not create or innovate? Is there anything new under the sun? Does creativity thrive on imperfection in self and other? How important is it to be at the right time and place? How does chance favor the prepared mind exactly? Is it possible to so over-prepare, that you eliminate the possibility of a creative outcome? Can dreaming make you more creative? What about lucid dreaming? What about day dreaming? Are art and work ultimately incompatible? Can the industrial be considered artistic? Are most creative ideas actually ridiculous masquerading as good ideas? Is being creative necessarily a wasteful process? Is tinkering a good metaphor for brainstorming? And vice versa? Is there really a fine line between genius and madness? Do creative people tend to be crazy people? Where do preconceived notions come from? Is creativity contagious? Was Santayana right when he said, "Those who cannot
