PENANG celebrates Merdeka annually with the launch of flying the Malaysian flag a month before the actual day, on 31st August. A ceremony will be held where all the Government agencies will receive the flags in a symbolic hand-over from the Penang Pakatan Rakyat State Leaders. This year, the event was held on 19 July 2012 at Sunway Carnival when the organising chairman, Datuk Abdul Halim Hussain, who is also the Penang State Assembly Speaker handed over the flags. Present at the event were Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, Deputy Chief Ministers Datuk Mansor Othman and Prof. P. Failure to do so would see the private companies earning exorbitant profits at the expense of an efficient, reliable and affordable service given to the public. Without strong government oversight of such public goods, privatisation invariably leads to piratisation where only the profits are privatisated and any losses incurred socialised to be borne by the public. There is grave concern that the privatisation of the Penang Port without consultation with the state government, local stakeholders and the people of Penang generally is another piratisation exercise.
