Penang PKR at the centre of a sand storm Malaysiakini.com July 16, 2010 Within the quiet enclaves of Batu Kawan, a row has erupted that puts in bad light the Penang government in general and PKR in particular. Batu Kawan, in the south of Seberang Perai, is the site planned for the third township in Penang, after Bayan Baru and Seberang Jaya. NONEHowever, poison-pen emails alleging top-level corruption have been circulating for weeks about illegal sand mining activities in the area, purportedly allowed due to the clandestine relationship between the mine owner, the deputy chief minister I and a state executive councillor, who are top PKR state leaders. Persons who are at the centre of the storm are DPM I Mansor Othman (left), state exco member for agriculture, rural development and flood mitigation and PKR state deputy chief Law Choo Kiang, and former state deputy women's wing chief Dr Joyce Lee. The crisis has also led to Seberang Perai Municipal Councillor Goh Choon Aik to relinquish his post as Batu Kawan PKR exco member, as he claimed that the allegations have not been seriously looked into. Goh tried to halt the sand mining operation but its owner revealed proof that he had obtained the approval of the state and threatened to take legal action against Goh. As a result of the threat, Goh resigned from the party but has retained his councillor's post. Soon after, the poison-pen email was found circulating. Goh and Law, who is also Bukit Tambun assemblyperson, have been at each other's throat in the Chinese press, with the former accused of sending a letter of complaint to Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and Mansor regarding the latter's alleged inaction towards the sand mining issue.

In an interview with Malaysiakini, Law said that he plans to continue the proposed reforms which were part of the legacy left by former speaker Abdul Halim Hussain, who presided over the House from 2008 to April this year. "According to our previous records, the state assembly standing order committee proposed eight amendments, and submitted them to the state executive council and legal advisor for consideration," Law said. dap special meeting 110313 lim guan eng"One of the amendments is to increase the verbal Q&A session from three hours (on the first day of the sitting) to 90 minutes every day of the proceedings," he added. However, the proposal had lapsed since it was proposed in the last term, before April 5, when Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng (left) dissolved the state assembly on Apr 5, two days after Parliament dissolved, paving the way for polls on May 5. Law said the proposal must now be discussed again by the new committee, which was formed last Friday. Law supports the idea to increase the time for Q&A session, adding that he was confident it would be carried out during his tenure. "Let's us do whatever we can. We do not have to wait until every amendment is approved," he said.

Pakatan reps ready to 'take the risk' over Black 505 rally MalaysiaKini.com June 20, 2013 By Susan Loone Penang Pakatan Rakyat representatives said they would face the risk of losing their posts as MPs and assemblypersons for taking part in the Black 505 rally this Saturday to protest alleged electoral fraud in the May 5 general election. Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin said the people and public opinion were with Pakatan in fighting for this cause and therefore, they must proceed regardless of the dangers of being incarcerated for it. NONE"Everyone knows BN won by cheating, there are so many incidences of the indelible ink which are not delible, there is gerrymandering, especially in rural areas, and the list goes on," Sim (right) said, in a press conference to urge Penangites to attend the rally. "There is also an overwhelming number of petitions filed against 40 seats, an unprecedented number in history, it shows a serious flaw in the election process," he added. Accompanying Sim are state executive councillor Dr Afif Bahardin, MP Kasthurirani Pattoo (Batu Kawan), assemblypersons accompanying Ong Chin Wen (Bukit Tengah), Lee Khai Loon (Machang Bubok), Law Choo Kiang (Bukit Tambun),Teh Lai Hing (Komtar), T Jayabalan (Batu Uban), Cheah Kah Peng (Kebun Bunga), Dr Afif Bahardin and state PAS election director Roshidi Hussin. The group wants Penangites to attend the rally as they have been the "agents of change" for Penang since 2008, where the BN coalition - which ruled the state since 1971 - was ousted by Pakatan then. Roshidi - a former candidate for Penaga - also urged all PAS members to go down to Padang Merbok where the rally would be held, although Pakatan has yet to get permission to use the venue from the Kuala Lumpur mayor.
