Arch., Department of Architecture Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Berin F. Gür June 2009, 135 pages The aim of this thesis is to reveal the potentials of “Web” as a system of achitectural organization. This concept developed by Georges Candilis, Alexis Josic, and Shadrach Woods can be seen as a product of the discourse arose in 1960s, which concieves the city as a continuous and dynamic structure rather than a static entity composed of individual buildings. In this sense, Web appears as a system of architectural organization that responds to this dynamism by enabling growth and change. In this thesis, Frankfurt-Römerberg Competition Project by Candilis-Josic-Woods (CJW) is analyzed to understand the potential of Web in organizing both physical and social relations. Revealing the potentials of Web requires examination of other concepts introduced by Candilis-Josic-Woods. Therefore, the relationship between Web and its sources (casbah and bidonville ) and precedents ( habitat évolutif and Stem) will be constructed. In order to construct this relation and to understand how Web operates as a system of architectural organization, the components and design acts of Web as well as its potentials will be analyzed in the case of Frankfurt-Römerberg Project. In doing so, the project will be seen as the main prototype of Web. The thesis will also put emphasis on habitat évolutif as the main idea behind Web. It will be argued that habitat évolutif evolved into Web with the help of stem as a connecting element. Candilis-Josic-Woods’un mimari yakla şımı bitmi ş planlar yerine ucu açık organizasyon sistemleri önerir. Ağ, Candilis-Josic-Woods tarafından üretilmi ş olan bu sistemler içerisinde en geli şmi ş ve karma şık olanıdır, ancak A ğ’ın potansiyelinin ortaya çıkarılması bu ortaklar tarafından geli ştirilmi ş di ğer kavramların da incelenmesini gerektirmektedir. Bu nedenle, bu tez A ğ’ın öncülleri ve kaynaklarıyla olan ili şkisini kurgulayacaktır. Bu ili şkiyi kurulabilmek ve A ğ’ın bir mimari organizasyon sistemi olarak nasıl i şledi ğini anlayabilmek için A ğ’ın potansiyellerinin yanı sıra, bile şenleri ve tasarım eylemleri de Frankfurt-Römerberg Yarı şma Projesi üzerinden incelenecektir. Tezin di ğer bir vurgusu da, A ğ’ın anafikri olarak ortaya çıkan evrilen habitat (habitat évolutif ) kavramı olacaktır. Soon it expanded to include sculpture, poetry, perfor- mance, photography, and cinema, taking on a multi-disciplinary character that regularly crossed or erased borders within the arts. Its rela- tionship to architecture, however, is more complex. In the 1960s, a few architects sought to resolve contradictions between the principles of Fluxus and the presumptions of their own field, and explored the possibilities of change —flux— in architectural practice. This article will investigate possible connections between Fluxus and the architectural practices. It considers three figures who were both theorists and architects: Georges Maciunas, Shadrach Woods and Joachim Pfeufer. Their practices, considered together, form what in this article I coin “fluxarchitecture”. Keywords Fluxus, Architecture, Urbanism, Woods, Pfeufer, Maciunas.     team HISTORIA CONTEMPORANEA ORIGENES El Team 10 o Team X (team ten), fue un grupo de arquitectos y otros participantes invitados a una serie de reuniones que se iniciaron en julio de 1953 en el congreso C.I.A.M. IX (Aix en provence, Francia), desde donde introdujeron sus doctrinas al urbanismo. Se dieron a conocer con el Manifiesto de Doorn, en el que reflejaban sus ideas de arquitectura y urbanismo. Los integrantes del Team X exponían, discutían -a veces efusivamente, llegando a la afrenta- y analizaban problemas arquitectónicos, de manera que sus escritos no constituían dogmas, sino ideas y opiniones. La formación oficial del Team 10 se produce realmente el 30 de junio de 1954 en las oficinas centrales de la UNESCO en París, posterior por tanto al congreso de Aix (1953) y cinco meses después de la reunión del grupo en el “Encuentro de Doorn” (29 - 31 enero de 1954). However, the well-known architectural “-isms” are bound together with productions of the so-called “transitional” periods, the legacy of which deserves special scientific interest. A significant number of these kinds of “in-between product” in the field of social housing was built during the 1960s and 1970s, between the periods of modernism and postmodernism. At the end of the 1980s in many European countries, particularly in France, massive renovation processes were started, which continue to this day. Due to political, social and aesthetic changes, a great deal of post-war residential heritage has been radically reconstructed or demolished. This process touches not only ordinary residential groups (so-called grands ensembles), but also harms some of the more interesting ensembles. Many of them are undervalued and have not been rehabilitated since their creation, with some often doomed to disappear. The current paper is an attempt to analyse the historical, urban and morphological aspects of the Maurelette residential complex, built in the northern suburbs of Marseille during 1963-1965. The design particularities of the Maurelette complex demonstrate the ambition to create a “non-ordinary” ensemble using ordinary and inexpensive construction means and materials.

Looking back to the fifties it was then that brink was crossed, it was then that architec- tural theory convulsed, then that the social sciences suddenly seemed im0portant. A change of sensibility is what I now think Team X was all about. After 1944 France entered a second and decisive stage of its révolution urbaine. Substantial shortages in the realm of social housing urged the government to take large urban planning initiatives.3 Urban planning became completely embedded in the project for the modernization of the country, represented by the subse- quent Plans de Modernisation et d’Equipement. The centralized and technocratic character of these modernization plans was practically literally translated in the urban planning ap- proaches used. The large housing complexes that arose in the peripheries of all of the French cities, the so-called Immeubles Sans Affection (ISA), demonstrate this.4 Com- pletely detached from their local or regional context, independent of the existing urban morphology, these complexes were the first exponents of an understanding of the urban as a mere facility, a presumption that gained importance in the 1950s and 1960s Grand En- sembles.5 In these projects urban form was no longer considered as a spatial phenomenon embedded in a context, but rather as an accountable and independent unit.

In this article, I discuss the development of Candilis-Josic-Woods’ conceptual ideas of stem and web. I further elaborate how those concepts are unified, but also expanded and elaborated in the concept of groundscraper. The concept of groundscraper combines stem and web into a coherent architectural proposal. It also includes urban and environmental issues to this proposal which reveal the architects’ intentions to instigate social-political change through their design. I elaborate on how Candilis, Josic and Woods work with these concepts as drivers of design, from the initial diagrammatic proposal, through the development of site strategy, to the building execution. ii From inception to completion, the Free University project encouraged interdisciplinarity and exchange.

    Shadrach Woods, between Synthesis of Major Arts and Non-Art Shadrach Woods (1923-1973) appears again on the pages of Le Carré Bleu after having been one of its main figures in the '60s and '70s, when this review was written and produced in Rue Dauphine in Paris, at the Candilis-Josic-Woods associated firm. Shadrach Woods, in his short professional career – twenty five years between 1947 and 1973, the year of his untimely death – dealt with architecture, town-planning and theory of the project in a crucial moment of last century: the second post-war period in Europe, the years in which the composition and operational principles of the Modern Movement were questioned, the years of an urgent reconstruction. Shadrach Woods is like Samuel Beckett, affirms Peter Smithson. In his working method, from well -pondered beginnings towards a more general method, in Smithson's words “he was the only one in his generation to proceed with such a caution”, and this method enabled him “to attain the most original and radical results” 1. The British soul of Team X used these words in an article on the New York Times in 1975. Woods was closely connected to Team X's experience, being part of its core group. He regularly used to attend its group meetings from 1953 to 1973, sharing its vision of the construction of a Utopia of the present.2 An unprecedented aspect of Shadrach Woods' work is related to artistic contamination and to the pursuit of a synthesis of arts. A case in point in this direction is a project of 1961, in Poitiers, never published before.

    Fabiano Borba Vianna evisiting toulouse-le mirail: r from utopia of the present to the future in the past 34 Abstract The article discusses the conception and the recent partial pós- demolition of the Toulouse-Le Mirail project, designed by the French office Candilis-Josic-Woods, relating it to the postwar period and to themes that emerged during discussions and meetings of Team 10. The meeting of Royaumont in 1962 is studied. In such occasion the project was presented by Georges Candilis and it was criticized for its large scale, revealing the position of authors such as Jaap Bakema, José Antonio Coderch, Fernando Távora and André Schimmerling, all present at the meeting. The method combines bibliographic research, investigation into Team 10 archives belonging to the collection of the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, as well as an empirical component with a site visit to the work. As a result, it is questioned to what extent the architectonic and urban values related to the project can be reinterpreted to support new reflections consistent with the reality of the interventions in large- scale housing settlements.
