SARE, Vol. 58, Issue 1 | 2021 Making Space for Myth: Worldbuilding and Interconnected Narratives in Mythspace Francis Paolo Quina University of the Philippines-Diliman, Quezon City, the Philippines Abstract The comics medium has long proven to be fertile ground for worldbuilding, spawning not only imaginary worlds but multiverses that have become international transmedial franchises. In the Philippines, komiks (as it is called locally) has provided the Filipino popular imagination with worlds populated by superheroes, super spies, supernatural detectives, and creatures from different Philippine mythologies. The komiks series Mythspace, written by Paolo Chikiamco and illustrated by several artist-collaborators, takes the latter concept, and launches it into outer space. Classified by its own writer as a “Filipino space opera” consisting of six loosely interconnected stories, Mythspace presents a storyworld where the creatures of Philippine lower mythologies are based on various alien species that visited the Philippines long ago. The article will examine the use of interconnected narratives as a strategy for worldbuilding in Mythspace. Drawing from both subcreation and comic studies, this article posits that interconnected narratives is a worldbuilding technique particularly well-suited to comics, and that the collaborative nature of the medium allows for a diversity of genres and visual styles that can be used by future komiks creators to develop more expansive storyworlds. Ito ang kauna-unahang panuring o bansag sa ganitong uri ng dugtungang palabas sa telebisyon. Ano nga ba ang epikserye? Higit na malalim na tanong, paano masasabing epikseryengK Filipino ang isang palabas? Bago tuluyang masagot ang mga tanong na nailatag, mahalagang taluntunin ang naging kasaysayan at anyo ng mga soap opera sa mga palabas- pantelebisyon. Sa disertasyon ni Reyes (1) kaniyang sinabi na isa ang soap Victoria... opera sa mga programang sinusundan ng mga manonood ng telebisyon. At dahil kinahuhumalingan ang mga ganitong klaseng programa, unti-unti na itong sinusundan hanggang sa makabuo na ng mga solidong tagapagtangkilik. May isang aspekto ang masasabing naging dahilan kung bakit ganoon na lamang ang naging tugon ng mga tao sa mga programang kanilang sinusundan. Bukod sa katotohanang may mga elemento ng pag-iidolo sa mga artista kung saan masasabing tunay na naggagandahang lalaki at babae ang mga bida, pumapasok din ang kapangyarihan ng wika bilang mekanismo ng pagkakaunawa at pagkahumaling. Tumutukoy ang soap opera sa mga dramang pantelebisyon na may sumusunod na pormulasyon, (1) problem (suliranin), (2) examination (pagtalakay sa suliranin), (3) catharsis (pamamaraan upang magupo ang suliranin) at (4) resolution (ang kasagutan o kaliwanagan sa suliranin). Ibinatay ang siklong nabanggit sa narrative drama ayon kay Aristotle. Tinawag naman itong soap sapagkat karaniwan, mga sabon ang nagiging pangunahing advertiser nito (Anger, 1999). Mula sa soap opera, nabuo naman ang taguring telenobela. -
Multilevel Censorship As Media Repression in the Philippines

Jopson University of the Philippines Manila Silent Assault: Multilevel Censorship as Media Repression in the Philippines Abstract This article examines media repression as experienced by independent media practitioners. It explores two cases of media repression through interviews: the termination of the radio program Ngayon Na, Bayan! (Right Now, People!) in 2006; and the censorship of Rights, a series of public service advertisements in 2007. State censorship through laws, review and regulatory boards, and the military, together with self-censorship among media practitioners due to pressures in the media industry, constitute multilevel media repression. The silencing of alternative voices is a form of everyday violence (Scheper-Hughes, 2003; Kleinman, 2003). As multilevel repression exposes the insecurity of a government in a state of crisis (Wieviorka 2003), a counter discourse to silence (Greene, 2003) is created in the process. (CSC). CSC is in the process of cataloguing and integrating its collections in the Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) of Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo (AEA). The cataloguing and OPAC merging have long been planned to further cater to the needs of interested researchers. Initiating the plan was further intensified during the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU) team’s visit at DLSU-D on September 28 -29. This project was also in response to the query of whether the data on CSC collections are incorporated in the OPAC. The center adopted the geography-based Local Studies Materials Classification (LSMC) scheme devised for local studies centers. It was introduced by Ms. Mary Ann Jimenez, AEA Filipiniana section head, as part of her master’s thesis at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. A Certain Tendency Europeanization as a Response to Americanization in the Philippines’ “Golden-Age” Studio System Joel David Inha University Abstract Malvarosa (Gregorio Fernandez, 1958) possesses a curious reputation in relation to other prestige productions of the so-called first “Golden Age of Philippine Cinema” (roughly the 1950s). Although sharing certain neorealist properties with the other serious outputs of LVN, its production company, it also partakes of the overreliance on coincidence and the mercurial performa- tive style that characterize the then less-reputable undertakings of Philippine cinema. This article attempts a reconsideration of the significance of film texts sourced from Philippine graphic novels (known as komiks) as more properly belonging to the period succeeding the Golden Age, when innovations that would eventually provide the foundation for more accomplished film activity during the martial-law period were first introduced. Such anxieties might be prone to exacerbation now that the once-tallest building in the world has collapsed from a terrorist attack attributed to Islamic militants, and the tallest building (at least from 1998 to 2004 and still the tallest twin-building structure) is a few hours away from Manila by plane in the Islamic state of Malaysia. Other projects intended to challenge the current record holder, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, continue to be announced and undertaken, mostly outside the Euro-American sphere. -

From text to film: The Tragic Hero in Lino Brocka’s Jaguar John Evan Orias (MA Communication, University of Santo Tomas) One of the most preferred activities of Filipinos is watching movies during their spare time. Due to its historical ties with the United States, the Philippine cinema has embraced the influence of the American film industry in terms of motifs, archetypes, storylines, and characterizations. The adaptation of American films in the Philippines is quite common. Local filmmakers have been using American film musicals as source for film production since the 1930s. However, some genres in Philippine cinema can also be traced back to Spanish theater forms – sarsuwela, komedya, and sinakulo – which were adapted to the country’s culture. Most of the film adaptations in the country have been historically and culturally associated with comics such as the famous works of Mars Ravelo and Carlo J. Caparas. In fact, some of their heroes have become immortalized by local television networks and filmmakers. These include Darna, Dyesebel, Captain Barbell, Panday, and Joaquin Bordado. In the context of Philippine cinema, only two literary journalism pieces of Nick Joaquin have been put up on the big screen. These include Lino Brocka’sJaguar (1979) and Mike de Leon’sKisapmata(1981), which were based from Quijano de Manila’s book, Reportage on Crime(1977, 2009).Based on true events, these realist films painted a detailed portrait of tragedy in the lives of common people. Both bagged awards in the local film festival and were presented in Cannes. Despite all of these, only a few literary journalism pieces are being adapted for film production.
