From Text to Film: the Tragic Hero in Lino Brocka's Jaguar John Evan Orias (MA Communication, University of Santo Tomas) One O From text to film: The Tragic Hero in Lino Brocka’s Jaguar John Evan Orias (MA Communication, University of Santo Tomas) One of the most preferred activities of Filipinos is watching movies during their spare time. Due to its historical ties with the United States, the Philippine cinema has embraced the influence of the American film industry in terms of motifs, archetypes, storylines, and characterizations. The adaptation of American films in the Philippines is quite common. Local filmmakers have been using American film musicals as source for film production since the 1930s. However, some genres in Philippine cinema can also be traced back to Spanish theater forms – sarsuwela, komedya, and sinakulo – which were adapted to the country’s culture. Most of the film adaptations in the country have been historically and culturally associated with comics such as the famous works of Mars Ravelo and Carlo J. Caparas. In fact, some of their heroes have become immortalized by local television networks and filmmakers. These include Darna, Dyesebel, Captain Barbell, Panday, and Joaquin Bordado. In the context of Philippine cinema, only two literary journalism pieces of Nick Joaquin have been put up on the big screen. These include Lino Brocka’sJaguar (1979) and Mike de Leon’sKisapmata(1981), which were based from Quijano de Manila’s book, Reportage on Crime(1977, 2009).Based on true events, these realist films painted a detailed portrait of tragedy in the lives of common people. Both bagged awards in the local film festival and were presented in Cannes. Despite all of these, only a few literary journalism pieces are being adapted for film production. These adaptations are considered rare since literary journalism pieces are not famous sources for film translation. In the same manner, the relationship between literary journalism and film adaptation remains perfunctorily examined. Literary journalism is a nonfiction printed prose where the content is shaped into story or sketch by use of narrative devices associated with literature.Works of literary journalists are usually published in newspapers and magazines. Journalists apply fiction techniques in writing news and events. This study seeks to determine how Brocka translated Joaquin’s English-language literary journalism piece to a film that uses the vernacular. The researcher will evaluate Brocka’s application of literary journalism techniques to his film in terms of dramatic reconstruction. The study will also present the intertextual dialogue between the film and the literary journalism piece with the aid of film semiotics and adaptation theory. .

Mass spectral analysis and subsequent synthesis identified the active compounds as n- butyl (E)-7,9-decadienoate (major component) and ethyl (E)-7,9-decadienoate (minor component), both structurally similar to sex pheromone components previous reported from related Darna spp. Additionally, methyl (E)-7,9-decadienoate was identified from female abdominal extracts and a strong EAD response was elicited by the synthetic compound. n-Butyl (E)-7,9-decadienoate was the only component detected by solid phase microextraction (SPME) collections from single calling female moths, however the absence of the minor components may be a result of their lower abundance.

    Review of Women’s Studies 20 (1-2): 33-65 WOMEN IN FILIPINO RELIGION-THEMED FILMS Erika Jean Cabanawan Abstract This study looks at four Filipino films—Mga Mata ni Angelita, Himala, Ang Huling Birhen sa Lupa, Santa Santita—that are focused on the discourse of religiosity and featured a female protagonist who imbibes the image and role of a female deity. Using a feminist framework, it analyzes the subgenre’s connection and significance to the Filipino consciousness of a female God, and the imaging of the Filipino woman in the context of a hybrid religion. The study determines how religion is used in Philippine cinema, and whether or not it promotes enlightenment. The films’ heavy reference to religious and biblical images is also examined as strategies for myth-building. his study looks at the existence of Filipino films that are focused T on the discourse of religiosity, featuring a female protagonist who imbibes the image and assumes the role of a female deity. In the four narratives, the female protagonists eventually incur supernatural powers after a perceived apparition of the Virgin Mary or the image of the Virgin Mary, and incurring stigmata or the wounds of Christ. Using a feminist framework, this paper through textual analysis looks at the Filipino woman in this subgenre, as well as those images’ connection and significance to the Filipino consciousness of a female God.

REYES The Komiks and Retelling the Lore of the Folk Komiks (comics), which emerged in the 1920s, have captured the Filipinos’ imagination, subsequently becoming materials for major motion pictures, yet marginalized in cultural studies. This article offers a diachronic analysis of the komiks between the 1930s and the 1970s to reveal the relationship between selected komiks characters and the folk tradition embodied in epics and legends. It also explains the komiks writers’ fascination with the remote past and their construction of heroes and heroines. In illuminating the worldview of writers and readers and the meanings generated when texts and readers interact, this article problematizes the supposition that popular culture is unalloyed escapism.     SARE, Vol. 58, Issue 1 | 2021 Making Space for Myth: Worldbuilding and Interconnected Narratives in Mythspace Francis Paolo Quina University of the Philippines-Diliman, Quezon City, the Philippines Abstract The comics medium has long proven to be fertile ground for worldbuilding, spawning not only imaginary worlds but multiverses that have become international transmedial franchises. In the Philippines, komiks (as it is called locally) has provided the Filipino popular imagination with worlds populated by superheroes, super spies, supernatural detectives, and creatures from different Philippine mythologies. The komiks series Mythspace, written by Paolo Chikiamco and illustrated by several artist-collaborators, takes the latter concept, and launches it into outer space. Classified by its own writer as a “Filipino space opera” consisting of six loosely interconnected stories, Mythspace presents a storyworld where the creatures of Philippine lower mythologies are based on various alien species that visited the Philippines long ago. The article will examine the use of interconnected narratives as a strategy for worldbuilding in Mythspace. Drawing from both subcreation and comic studies, this article posits that interconnected narratives is a worldbuilding technique particularly well-suited to comics, and that the collaborative nature of the medium allows for a diversity of genres and visual styles that can be used by future komiks creators to develop more expansive storyworlds. It explores two cases of media repression through interviews: the termination of the radio program Ngayon Na, Bayan! (Right Now, People!) in 2006; and the censorship of Rights, a series of public service advertisements in 2007. State censorship through laws, review and regulatory boards, and the military, together with self-censorship among media practitioners due to pressures in the media industry, constitute multilevel media repression. The silencing of alternative voices is a form of everyday violence (Scheper-Hughes, 2003; Kleinman, 2003). As multilevel repression exposes the insecurity of a government in a state of crisis (Wieviorka 2003), a counter discourse to silence (Greene, 2003) is created in the process.
