UP Film Institute Filmography of Filipino Films 2003 Introduced by Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon Compiled by Virginia D. Cuyugan and Lucenio Martin L. Lauzon with assistance from Pol del Mundo of the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Ana Fajardo of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) Edwin Joaquin of the MOWELFUND Film Institute The Filipino film celebrates this year its 85th anniversary but its activities and achievements through the years still need to be documented and assessed fully and systematically. Today, the country is still wanting not only in the capability to preserve its film heritage but also in the determined and sustained efforts to collect and preserve existing data on Filipino film for posterity. It does not help that the conservation of Filipino heritage, taxing and tedious as it is already, is appreciated by only a few individuals even within the industry. As an institution dedicated to the study of films, the UP Film Institute (UPFI) shall try to help in the task of gathering, classifying and disseminating data on the Filipino film. As part of its commitment to the public, the UPFI shall make these data available to everyone through the publication of a systematic and comprehensive listing of Filipino films, beginning with those produced in 2003. This year is most apropos as it was also in 2003 that the UPFI was formally established by virtue of the UP Board of Regents resolution. The UPFI realizes that such filmographies are indispensable for anyone who wants to gain an overview of the film landscape in the country and to make necessary, informed and authoritative observations on the state of the Filipino film industry. Just a glance at the past year’s filmography already reveals so much. Once more the industry suffered a decline in production. The number of films produced went down to 80 in 2003, from 94 in 2002 and 103 in 2001. The figure is the lowest in several decades, considering that from the 1970s to the 1990s, the country’s annual film output never fell below 120, even in years critical for the Philippine economy. Viva Films was the most prolific studio in 2003, with 13 releases (including co-ventures), followed by Star Cinema with 8 and Regal Entertainment and El Niño Films with 6 each. All in all, there were 29 companies in business, 5 of which, namely, Nu 115 Art Movies, Wild World Entertainment, Vintage Productions, Entertainment Warehouse and Sacramento Films, were new. The dominant genre was still sex drama although comedy obviously made a strong presence. For one, the year’s champion at the tills was a Star Cinema family comedy, Ang Tanging Ina, which toppled the previous record set in 2000 by Anak (also from Star Cinema but a drama) to become the officially recognized highest-grossing Filipino film ever made. It was a lackluster year for action films as box-office performance of productions of this mold all fell below expectations. The biggest-budgeted in terms of both production cost and marketing were the romance flicks and the fantasy adventures that took off from Hollywood franchises. This does not mean though that romances and fantasies were the most lucrative. In terms of return of investment, sex dramas still took the lead. They had a steady following that guaranteed a sufficient margin of profit. The profitability of sex dramas explains why the past year’s most visible stars were the sexpots and the most active directors were those most identified with the bold genre. Cesar Abella made 6 while Armand Reyes and Jun Posadas each megged 4 skin flicks. Even first-rate directors could not avoid dabbling in adult movies as evidenced by Joel Lamangan, Tikoy Aguiluz, Jose Carreon, Celso Ad. Castillo, Mel Chionglo, Joey Romero, Meek Roxas, Romy Suzara and Mario O’Hara. Both Mac Alejandre and Elwood Perez made their comeback after years of absence with a couple of sex vehicles. One conclusion that could be drawn from all this is that more than being the most prevalent local screen fare now, “sexcapades” have become for all intents and purposes a staple of Philippine cinema, almost like cooked rice on the Filipino food table. Whether this is good or bad is another question. How long this situation will remain is for everyone to ask. In this filmography, each entry contains in this order: 1) the title of the film; 2) genre, running time, MTRCB classification; 3) short synopsis; and 4) production data.
