Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction Ismat Chughtai, Sa'adat Hasan Manto
Ajeeb Aadmi—An Introduction I , Sa‘adat Hasan Manto, Krishan Chandar, Rajinder Singh Bedi, Kaifi Azmi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Majrooh Sultanpuri, Ali Sardar Jafri, Majaz, Meeraji, and Khawaja Ahmed Abbas. These are some of the names that come to mind when we think of the Progressive Writers’ Movement and modern Urdu literature. But how many people know that every one of these writers was also involved with the Bombay film indus- try and was closely associated with film directors, actors, singers and pro- ducers? Ismat Chughtai’s husband Shahid Latif was a director and he and Ismat Chughtai worked together in his lifetime. After Shahid’s death Ismat Chughtai continued the work alone. In all, she wrote scripts for twelve films, the most notable among them ◊iddµ, Buzdil, Sån® kµ ≤µ∞y≥, and Garm Hav≥. She also acted in Shyam Benegal’s Jun∑n. Khawaja Ahmed Abbas made a name for himself as director and producer for his own films and also by writing scripts for some of Raj Kapoor’s best- known films. Manto, Krishan Chandar and Bedi also wrote scripts for the Bombay films, while all of the above-mentioned poets provided lyrics for some of the most alluring and enduring film songs ever to come out of India. In remembering Kaifi Azmi, Ranjit Hoskote says that the felicities of Urdu poetry and prose entered the consciousness of a vast, national audience through the medium of the popular Hindi cinema; for which masters of Urdu prose, such as Sadat [sic] Hasan Manto, wrote scripts, while many of the Progressives, Azmi included, provided lyrics. -

Some of his most successful work was done in the late 1970s and 1980s with Salim Khan as half of the script-writing duo credited as Salim-Javed. Akhtar continues to be a prominent figure in Bollywood and is one of the most popular and sought-after lyricists. <b> Early Life </b> He was born as Jadoo Akhtar in Gwalior, (Madhya Pradesh) to Jan Nisar Akhtar, a Bollywood film songwriter and Urdu poet, and singer Safia Akhtar, a teacher and writer. His original name was Jadoo, taken from a line in a poem written by his father: "Lamba, lamba kisi jadoo ka fasana hoga". He was given the official name of Javed since it was the closest to the word jadoo. Amongst his family members who are poets are the Urdu poet Majaz (maternal uncle), and his grandfather, Muztar Khairabadi, and Maulana Fazl-e-Haq Khairabadi, a noted philosopher, poet and religious scholar of the nineteenth century. Akhtar's younger brother, Salman Akhtar, is a psychoanalyst practicing in the United States. Having lost his mother while very young, Akhtar's early years were spent in Lucknow, Aligarh and Mumbai, mostly with relatives. He studied in Colvin Taluqdars' College in Lucknow and the Minto Circle where he completed his matriculation from Aligarh Muslim University. After matriculation, Akhtar acquired a B.A. from Saifiya College in Bhopal. A gifted debater in college, he won the Rotary Club Prize frequently. -

Twentieth-Century Urdu Literature

TWENTIETH-CENTURY URDU LITERATURE1 Omar Qureshi This introductory summary, of the course of Urdu literature in the twentieth century must continuously refer back to the nineteenth. This becomes necessary because, depending on one’s point of view, it was Urdu’s destiny or misfortune to gradually become identified as the lingua franca of the Muslims of India in the latter half of the last century. Consequently, the still unresolved dilemmas of the politics of Muslim identity in South Asia are difficult to separate from their expression in and through the development of Urdu. For our purposes then, the most significant consequence of the failed rebellion of 1857 was the gradual emergence of group identity among the recently politically dispossessed and culturally disoriented Muslim elite of North India. This effort to define Indian Muslim nationhood in the new colonial environment placed issues of past, present and future identity at the center of elite Muslim concerns. Not only were these concerns expressed largely in Urdu, but the literary legacy of Urdu formed the terrain through and on which some of the more significant debates were conducted. The Muslim leadership that emerged after 1857 looked to this pre-colonial literary legacy as an authentic, but highly problematic repository of the Indian Muslim identity; and the Urdu language itself as the most effective medium for the renewal and reform of the Muslims of British India. As Muslim identity politics gathered strength in colonial India, and Urdu was turned into the print language of the emerging nation, discussions of an apparently purely literary nature became a veritable mirror of ideological and sociopolitical change among India’s Muslims. -

Prime Minister’s Special 15-06-2019 Scholarship Scheme- 2019-20 Provisional Allotment: Round 1 Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme- 2019-20 Provisional Allotment: Round 1 Department of Higher the Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India is implementing Prime Minister`s Special Scholarship Scheme for J&K (PMSSS J&K) students from the academic year 2011. AICTE, being the implementing authority, awards scholarships to the candidates offered admission against supernumerary seats through online centralized counseling process under PMSSS. Supernumerary seats are created by University Grant Commission (UGC) in General Colleges and Universities; by AICTE in the approved Engineering Colleges (maximum of 04 seats per course) and 02 supernumerary seats in Pharmacy, Hotel Management, Architecture Colleges (for Architecture courses subject to clearance of NATA) and Agriculture colleges. 05 seats are created by Indian Nursing Council in each Nursing Institute. Accordingly, AICTE has invited online applications for admission under PMSSS for the AY 2019-20. Following candidates have been provisionally selected for admission based on merit and reservation policy of J&K Govt. It is hereby informed that the admission of the candidates is provisional and will be confirmed after the fulfilment of the specific eligibility criteria for the course as prescribed by the affiliating University/Institution and will be the responsibility of the concerned candidate. Candidates who have been allotted seats can download their allotment letter and welcome letter generated by the Head of the Institute just after receiving communication by AICTE.
