During that period Charlie brought to his demanding post the skill and ver satility of a seasoned newspaperman (he had served on the old Rochester Herald, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, and the Rochester Times-Union). He brought as well a ready wit, a genuine interest in students and in their teachers, and a rare devotion to his university. The growing body of knowledge, the increased numbers of students, the lack of professional training in teaching among medical faculty members combine to present a formidable instructional problem ..." "The type of work done in medical schools emphasizes the need for something that will stimulate the learning process, both for medical students and in postgraduate education for the practicing physician ..." "There is probably no field of human endeavor outside of medicine where knowledge is growing at such an ac celerated rate and where the need to keep abreast of this knowledge has so many implications for the lives and welfare of other people ... " In these sobering words members of an interdiscip linary team from the University's faculties in medicine and education have described the need for new instruc tional tools in the field of medical education. Their efforts to explore one promising technique-programmed in struction-last summer resulted in a nationwide confer ence attended by educators from 64 medical schools, along with representatives of allied fields. In many ways the University of Rochester was an ex ceptionally appropriate locale for such a conference: The University introduced the nation's first full-scale college-credit course in programmed instruction back in 1961. Based on these initial experiences in training some 200 teachers in programming, two members of the Col lege of Education faculty-Assistant Professor Jerome P. Lysaught and Associate Professor Clarence M. Wil liams-wrote the first book on a university's work in this field. In collaboration with Dr. Charles D. Sherman, Jr., of the Medical School's Department of Surgery, Williams and Lysaught launched a three-year pilot project in can cer teaching via programming, And, as part of their joint activities, the three men made the first formal survey of programmed instruction in the nation's medical schools. Actually, the Rochester conference was a direct out growth of this survey. The team's study had indicated THE that some 35 medical schools throughout the country were using-or were exploring-the possibilities of pro INTERDISCIPLINARY grammed instruction.
