FEDERATION PROGRAMS Teachers Reflect on their P2G Experience Four Chattanooga teachers recently traveled to Israel as part of the P2G (Partnership Together) program. Here are their summaries of their experiences. Riki Jordan Odineal: As an educator, there is nothing better than experiencing the education system of another area or country. When I went on the P2G Educator's Delegation over winter break, I knew I was in for a special trip. I was not disappointed! I spent two days at Mevoot Eron High School in Hadera in history, geography, art, and science classrooms. This is the kibbutz school for the four kibbutzim in the area. The students were engaged and curious. They also enjoyed the pencils, Little Debbies, and homemade tzedekeh box (made by my Sunday school class) I brought with me. I also had the opportunity to stay on a kibbutz with my new Israeli family. I stayed on Kibbutz Barkai, which is 15 minutes northeast of Hadera. There are no words for the warmth and hospitality I received from everyone on the kibbutz. I've never had more fresh produce in my life! I was definitely a fan of kib- butz life. Most importantly, I made many connections in both our Southeastern Region in the U.S. and our partnership region in Israel. It was amazing networking with our Israeli counterparts and planning future activities between our schools. We've also made plans to socialize with our Nashville and Knoxville coun- terparts. This trip was life-changing, and I am so thankful to the Federation for the opportunity! SE P2G group in the Cardo section of Old Jerusalem Rebecca Sadowitz: I want to thank the Federation so much for sending me to Israel for the educator’s consortium, Partnership Together.

Myers, Co-Chair Professor Arieh B. Saposnik, Co-Chair This study seeks to shed new light on the complex web of relations among history, historiography and contemporary life. It does so by focusing on Israeli commissions of inquiry that have taken rise in the wake of major national traumas such as failed battles in the 1948 War, the Yom Kippur War, and the assassination of the Zionist leader Chaim Arlosoroff. Each one of these landmark events in the history of Israel was investigated by a state or a military commission of inquiry, whose members and audience operate as authors of history and agents of memory. The study suggests that commissions of inquiry, which have been studied to date primarily as legal, administrative, and political bodies, in fact also operate as a public historian of a unique kind.

Review article Hydropower and pumped-storage in Israel – The energy security aspect of the Med-Dead Project S. E. Willner1, 2 1 The Ezri Center for Iran & Persian Gulf Studies, the University of Haifa, Israel 2 The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, Israel Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT The energy security paradigm has puzzled experts ranging from economists and politicians to military planners and historians; it is a topic which has been closely intertwined with the development of oil resources throughout modern history. Historically higher oil prices have fostered development and market penetration of alternative energy supply and demand technologies around the globe. Israel's energy security challenges, contrary to those of Persian Gulf states, derive from multiple issues. Yet, these energy security challenges are also partly a result of lack of resource diversification. From the resource diversification point of view, the impact of energy supply disruptions has multiple implications for Israel's national security. This paper focuses on reviewing the potential to establish pumped hydroelectric storage, and considers the strategic impacts of hydropower generation in Israel from the point of view of resource diversification by first building a case for a new hydropower generation. Even though the idea of introducing pumped hydroelectric storage to the Mediterranean Dead Sea project, also known as "The Seas project", is not a new concept and such technology is mature, new technological development plays an important role in determining the economic and technical feasibility of such a project.

Sara Yael Hirschhorn – Excerpt From Dissertation Chapter Three: Efrat – Copyright 2011 – Do Not Circulate Raishit Geula: Rabbi Shlomo Riskin’s Jewish-American Garin and the Makings of Efrat, 1973-1987 Efrat, named for the biblical locale mentioned in the Book of Chronicles, is located in the Gush Etzion region of the West Bank between Bethlehem and Hebron. With a population of over seven thousand residents, of which approximately half are American-Israelis, the city is the most highly recognizable Jewish-American colony in the occupied territories and has emerged as the cornerstone of the Etzion bloc.1 Yet, how did Efrat rise from the rubble of the post-1973 war to become the incipient American-style ―capital of the Gush‖2 in less than a decade? The story of Efrat is one of a strategic partnership between Israeli settlers and Jewish- American immigrants after the Yom Kippur War. It is framed by the personal friendship and professional partnership between Moshe Moshkowitz, a son of the pre-1948 Gush Etzion settlements and the New York –based modern Orthodox rabbi Steven (Shlomo) Riskin, which combined the insider knowledge and connections of a native activist with the capital and manpower galvanized by a dynamic spiritual leader. Efrat also produced a new model for American-Israeli settlement in the West Bank that combined the efforts an Israeli non- governmental organization, the Judean Hills Development Co., alongside Garin Raishit Geula [lit. The Origins of Redemption] in the United States. This cooperative venture and division of labor allowed Efrat to deftly navigate the politics and pitfalls of local coordination with the Israeli government while still retaining the distinctly American character of its new township.
