The VilbfJeS shelled were Kfar Rupin, Maoz I-Iaim,, Neve Eitm, Hamadiya, Beit Yosef, Yaxdena, Ashdot Yaakov, Tel Rat&r, Kinneret. Israel forces returned fire in self-defence, in the direction of the sOlXt?ces of fire in Jordan. As the Jordanian attack continued and grew in intensity it became necessary to employ also aircraft; to silence the Jordanian fire, The exchange of fire ended only at 0200 hours. It is to be observed in particular that Iraqi forces stationed in Jordan , violsted the cease-fire by launching an assault on Israeli villages from 122 mm* guns. FEDERATION PROGRAMS Teachers Reflect on their P2G Experience Four Chattanooga teachers recently traveled to Israel as part of the P2G (Partnership Together) program. Here are their summaries of their experiences. Riki Jordan Odineal: As an educator, there is nothing better than experiencing the education system of another area or country. When I went on the P2G Educator's Delegation over winter break, I knew I was in for a special trip. I was not disappointed! I spent two days at Mevoot Eron High School in Hadera in history, geography, art, and science classrooms. This is the kibbutz school for the four kibbutzim in the area. The students were engaged and curious. They also enjoyed the pencils, Little Debbies, and homemade tzedekeh box (made by my Sunday school class) I brought with me. I also had the opportunity to stay on a kibbutz with my new Israeli family. I stayed on Kibbutz Barkai, which is 15 minutes northeast of Hadera. There are no words for the warmth and hospitality I received from everyone on the kibbutz. I've never had more fresh produce in my life! I was definitely a fan of kib- butz life. Most importantly, I made many connections in both our Southeastern Region in the U.S. and our partnership region in Israel. It was amazing networking with our Israeli counterparts and planning future activities between our schools. We've also made plans to socialize with our Nashville and Knoxville coun- terparts. This trip was life-changing, and I am so thankful to the Federation for the opportunity! It does so by focusing on Israeli commissions of inquiry that have taken rise in the wake of major national traumas such as failed battles in the 1948 War, the Yom Kippur War, and the assassination of the Zionist leader Chaim Arlosoroff. Each one of these landmark events in the history of Israel was investigated by a state or a military commission of inquiry, whose members and audience operate as authors of history and agents of memory. The study suggests that commissions of inquiry, which have been studied to date primarily as legal, administrative, and political bodies, in fact also operate as a public historian of a unique kind.

Willner1, 2 1 The Ezri Center for Iran & Persian Gulf Studies, the University of Haifa, Israel 2 The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, Israel Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT The energy security paradigm has puzzled experts ranging from economists and politicians to military planners and historians; it is a topic which has been closely intertwined with the development of oil resources throughout modern history. Historically higher oil prices have fostered development and market penetration of alternative energy supply and demand technologies around the globe. Israel's energy security challenges, contrary to those of Persian Gulf states, derive from multiple issues. Yet, these energy security challenges are also partly a result of lack of resource diversification. From the resource diversification point of view, the impact of energy supply disruptions has multiple implications for Israel's national security. This paper focuses on reviewing the potential to establish pumped hydroelectric storage, and considers the strategic impacts of hydropower generation in Israel from the point of view of resource diversification by first building a case for a new hydropower generation. Even though the idea of introducing pumped hydroelectric storage to the Mediterranean Dead Sea project, also known as "The Seas project", is not a new concept and such technology is mature, new technological development plays an important role in determining the economic and technical feasibility of such a project.

A CRITICAL STUDY OF HABIMA PLAYS AS AN EXPRESSION OF ISRAELI NATIONALISM FROM 1948 TO 1968 Sam Levy A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY June 1972 Approved by Doctoral Committee B © 1972 Samuel Levy ALL RIGHTS RESERVED II , ABSTRACT Hebrew plays produced by Habima between 1948 and 1968 were examined to determine the extent to which they gave expression to Israeli nationalism. Twenty-five scripts, comprising the complete Hebrew repertory of Habima within the twenty years scope of the study, were evaluated by means of descriptive analysis. Theme, setting, plot, and language were examined, and related professional critiques were reported. A survey of Habima*s origins as a Soviet State Theatre (1918-26) indicated the thread of continuity linking Zionist aims of the past with those of the present in Israel: a national home and a national language. Eight dominating themes were discovered in the twenty-five plays: (1) Abandon ment of the kibbutz and couhtry are national disasters. (2) Unity is strength, (3) Collective life is superior to city life. (4) Conser vative fathers against liberal sons. (5) Isolation is hazardous to the state. (6) Duty is of higher priority than personal freedom or comfort. (7) Free press is destructive to the state. (8) Coming of the Messiah necessitates the destruction of Jewish history. Designated as the Israeli National Theatre by the state in 1958, Habima is comparable to some national theatres end is unlike others. Habima responded to the needs of the Israelis by developing Hebrew as a theatrical language, producing the best of world drama, mirroring the national reality as it is and as it could be, but at the same time never becoming a tool of the government.
