From European Contact to Quebec’s Independence Movement • The First Nations are the native peoples of Canada. • They came from Asia over 12,000 years ago. • They crossed the Bering Land Bridge that joined Russia to Alaska. • There were 12 tribes that made up the First Nations. • The Inuit are one of the First Nation tribes. • They still live in Canada today. • In 1999, Canada’s government gave the Inuit Nunavut Territory in northeast Canada. • The first explorers to settle Canada were Norse invaders from the Scandinavian Peninsula. • In 1000 CE, they built a town on the northeast coast of Canada and established a trading relationship with the Inuit. • The Norse deserted the settlement for unknown reasons. • Europeans did not return to Canada until almost 500 years later… • The Italian explorer, John Cabot, sailed to Canada’s east coast in 1497. • Cabot claimed an area of land for England (his sponsor) and named it “Newfoundland”. •Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River in 1534. •He claimed the land for France. •French colonists named the area “New France”. • In 1608, Samuel de Champlain built the first permanent French settlement in New France— called Quebec. • The population grew slowly. • Many people moved inland to trap animals. • Hats made of beaver fur were in high demand in Europe. -

The change in constructions of official Canadian identity was due to pressures from an ongoing dialogue in Canadian society that reflected the larger geo-political shifts taking place during the period. This dialogue helped shape the political discussion, from one focused on maintaining an out-dated national identity to one that was more representative of how many Canadians understood Canada to be. This change in political opinion accordingly transformed the official identity of the nation-state of Canada. Results confirmed the early predictions. When compared to the attitudinal positions of French and English Canadians on the same scale, the results revealed that Italian Canadians shared with the French Canadian majority in Quebec a high level of hostility toward authority, while the Slavic Canadians shared with English Canadians, the majority Canadian language group, a low level of hostility toward authority. It was also noted that Italian Canadians shared with English Canadians high scores on attitudes of anxiety toward authroity. Scholars Speak Out December 2016 Canadian Bilingualism, Multiculturalism and Neo- Liberal Imperatives By Douglas Fleming, University of Ottawa Canadian second language and immigration policies have often been held up as positive models for Americans on both the right and the left. In particular, both the “English Only” and the “English Plus” movements in the United States have claimed that French Immersion programming in Canada support their own positions (Crawford, 1992; King, 1997). However, in this piece I argue that Canadian immigration and language policies are closely intertwined and have been carefully calculated to subsume linguistic and cultural diversity under what Young (1987) once characterized as a form of “patriarchal Englishness against and under which… all others are subordinated” (pp.10-11). These policies have served neo-liberal economic imperatives and have helped perpetuate inequalities. In fact, I am of the opinion that they are not incompatible with empire building. Bilingualism and Multiculturalism Canada is a nation in which French is the first language for 22% of the total population of 36 million. English is the first language for 59%. The remaining 19% speak a third language as their mother tongue. The size of this third language grouping (the so-called Allophones) is due mainly to immigration (the highest rate in the G8 industrialized nations), self- reported visible minority status (19%) and the relatively high numbers of first nation peoples (4.5%). According to the last census, 17.5 % of the total population is now bilingual and 26.5% born outside of the country. It is a highly diverse population (all figures, Statistics Canada, 2016). -

Jatinder Mann “Anglo-Conformity”: Assimilation Policy in Canada, 1890s–1950s1 Abstract In the late nineteenth century Canada started to receive large waves of non- British migrants for the very first time in its history. These new settlers arrived in a country that saw itself very much as a British society. English-speaking Canadians considered themselves a core part of a worldwide British race. French Canadians, however, were obviously excluded from this ethnic identity. The maintenance of the country as a white society was also an integral part of English-speaking Canada’s national identity. Thus, white non-British migrants were required to assimilate into this English-speaking Canadian or Anglocen- tric society without delay. But in the early 1950s the British identity of English- speaking Canada began to decline ever so slowly. The first steps toward the gradual breakdown of the White Canada policy also occurred at this time. This had a corresponding weakening effect on the assimilation policy adopted toward non-British migrants, which was based on Anglo-conformity. Imagining Quebec
Imagining Quebec and Canada. Quebec in Canada. Quebec out of Canada. Since the late eighteenth century, this issue of Quebec and Canada has been at the heart of Canada's national self-construction. Writers and literary critics, with their need for symbolic representation, have per- sistently worked at finding a metaphor that can adequately represent the relationship between Quebec and the rest of Canada. In 1945, Hugh MacLennan borrowed "two solitudes" from Rainer Maria Rilke (who was using it to describe two lovers) and this metaphor certainly has currency in English Canada (a photocopy with the full quotation appeared on a bulletin board near my office just before the recent referendum). As early as 1876, Pierre-Joseph-Olivier Chauveau had suggested the famous "double spiral" staircase at the Château de Chambord, which two people can climb while catching only glimpses of each other, and without meeting at all. Phillip Stratford's 1979 image is more uncompromising: parallel lines that never meet. E.D. Blodgett suggests a "gitter," German for a "lattice-work fence, a grid of interwoven strands whose common threads relate and distinguish, but do not unify" (33). Patricia Smart borrows an image from a text by Nicole Brossard, of two women back to back: "Brossard's image is one of touching but not of fusion, of separate identities respected and shared as both partners look not at each other, but—supporting each other—out to the world. Transposed, it becomes an image of two nations and two pro- jects, an adjacent but not common space, a border shared in which both cultures find strength in difference." In 1969, D.G. -

Thinking Space: Mathuria 262 Homebound: Reflections on Spatial Difference as a Suburban Child Sunjay Mathuria Concordia University [email protected] _____________________________________ As many of us are now homebound and primarily living virtually, I am reminded of how being at home as a child prompted me to read texts (television and novels) spatially and become more cognizant of spatial differences and injustice. I learned how to read and reflect on my surroundings without leaving the house. Being a first and second generation Canadian child living in a suburban landscape presents unique challenges and opportunities in relation to developing and expressing spatial practices. When coupled with race, gender, class and mobility, the experiences of Canadian children in the suburbs can vary immensely. In my case, I felt largely confined to our home, and in this piece, I will discuss how, as a child, I approached Canadian youth television and young adult historical fiction as spatial texts, which enabled me to reflect on my own relationship with place. Television and literary texts offer those who are spatially limited or less mobile (such as suburban children) to reflect on their own spatial limitations and privileges, conceptualize spatial injustice and connect with other marginalized identities. I think we can even extend these reflections to the current coronavirus pandemic that has gripped our geographical realities. The Image of the Suburb When I was 10 years old, I was in a Toronto-area suburb, living in a large subdivision of meandering crescents, winding roads, looping streets, and cul-de-sacs. Childhood experiences shape how we think about community, space and geography.
