Amur Leopard The world’s most endangered cat Levels of Endangerment Critically endangered extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. Endangered very high risk of becoming extinct in the wild. Vulnerable The amur leopard is critically endangered facing a high risk of extinction in the wild. Why are they endangered? ● Prey shortage Amur leopards are dying because there isn’t enough prey. ● Poachers People called poachers are hunting Amur leopards for money ● Habitat loss Fires made by humans to clear land are driving the Amur leopard out of its territory ● Not enough Amur leopards are breeding in the wild Since there aren’t a lot of leopards, not a lot are born which isn’t helping the population Facts Amur leopards live on the China/Russia border and prey on roe deer, red deer, musk deer, sika deer, wild boars, hares, and badgers. Leopard’s spots are called rosettes. facts Males weigh 32-48 kilograms (70-105 lbs) but some can weigh 75 kilogram (165 lbs)! Females weigh 25-43 kilograms (55-95 lbs). People hunt amur leopards for their fur. They get a lot of money for it. Females fur are sold for $500 and Males sell for $1000! Amur leopard fur can grow up to 11.5 centimeters long in the winter! Most amur leopards are 5 feet long. Amur leopards are said to be the rarest cats in the world! They have blue or green eyes Is the population increasing? It's going up very slowly. They will probably always be at some level of endangerment. What is being done to help them? China, North Korea, and Russia are making preserves for Amur leopards and anti poachers are being hired. Wildlife groups are also lending a helping hand with saving them, like World Wildlife Federation! How many are left? What is the chance of long term survival? I predict that by looking at the chart, the population will slowly rise but it will take a really long time.
