For centuries, the Spanish and Spanish-speaking mestizo (mixed blood) elite oppressed the Mixtec People and their linguistic and cultural practices. These oppressive practices were experienced in Mixtec communities and surrounding urban areas, as well as in domestic and international migrant destinations. In the 1980s, a significant transition occurred in Mexico from indigenismo to a neoliberal multicultural framework. In this transition, discriminatory practices have become increasingly “symbolic,” referring to their assertion in everyday social practices rather than through overt force, obscuring both the perpetrator and the illegitimacy of resulting social hierarchies (Bourdieu, 1991). -

Un certain nombre de travaux portent sur la grossesse et l'accouchement au Mexique, mais le thème du post- partum a été peu étudié en profondeur, bien que les indigknes insistent sur le danger et l'importance des soins à cette période. Dans ce travail, la conception, la grossesse et l'accouchement sont décrits à titre introductif, tandis que les pratiques du post- partum sont analysées en détail : la période de repos de 20 ou 40 jours, le régime alimentaire particulier, l'abstinence sexuelle, les diverses précautions et prohibitions, les soins corporels, les tisanes, les bains de plantes et surtout, le bain de vapeur, à fonction à la fois thérapeutique et rituelle. This phenomenon, influenced by complex religious beliefs, included several practices such as decapitation, cranial deformation, and the use of human cranial bones for skull mask manufacturing. Archaeological evidence suggests that all of these practices required specialized knowledge of skull base and upper cervical anatomy. The authors con- ducted a systematic search for information on skull base anatomical and surgical knowledge among Mesoamerican civilizations. A detailed exposition of these results is presented, along with some interesting information extracted from historical documents and pictorial codices to provide a better understanding of skull base surgical practices among these cultures. Paleoforensic evidence from the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan indicates that Aztec priests used a specialized decapitation technique, based on a deep anatomical knowledge. -

Hoy en día se encuentran en el norte del estado de Coahuila y en el sur de Texas, y mantienen los rasgos que los conectan con los afro-americanos del Sur estadounidense. Tienen también muchas cosas en común con otras culturas afro-indígenas del continente, como la garífuna del litoral atlántico centroamericano. From Florida to Coahuila: The Mascogo group and the presence of an African-Creole culture in northern Mexico Abstract This article describes the story of the Mascogo, known in the US as Black Seminole, and analyzes their culture in the African-American context. Born from the association between runaway blacks and Indians in Florida, the Mascogo arrived in Mexico at the end of the nineteenth century after suffering war and deportation. Nowadays they are found in northern Coahuila and southern Texas, and they maintain the cultural elements that connect them with the African-Americans of the South of the US. -

Calderón, Chair This dissertation studies the socio-cultural connections of the United States and Mexico’s Pan-African selected twentieth- and twenty-first century sites of struggle through literature, film, and music. Novels and movies such as La negra Angustias (1948/1950), Imitation of Life (1933/1959), Angelitos negros (1948/1970), Como agua para chocolate saga (1989, 2016, 2017), and film (1992), as well as music of racial activism by Mexican and Afro-Latino artists such as Negro José and Afro-Chicano band Third Root, are all key elements of my project to study the formation and understanding what of Mexico’s Tercera Raíz entails historically, politically, and culturally. I focus my study on the development of black racial consciousness in twentieth-century Mexican cultural life, and I consequently explore the manner in which Mexican writers, filmmakers and artists have managed the relationship between Afro-Mexicans and majority ii populations of white and mestizo Mexicans, as well as the racial bridge existent between the United States’ black history, and Mexico’s Third Root. -

The Genetic History Of The Otomi In The Central Mexican Valley Abstract The Otomí, or Hñäñhü, is an indigenous ethnic group in the Central Mexican Valley that has been historically marginalized since before Spanish colonization. To investigate the extent by which historical, geographic, linguistic, and cultural influences shaped biological ancestry, I analyzed the genetic variation of 224 Otomí individuals residing in thirteen Otomí villages. Results indicate that the majority of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes belong to the four major founding lineages, A2, B2, C1, and D1, reflecting an overwhelming lack of maternal admixture with Spanish colonizers. Results also indicate that at an intra-population level, neither geography nor linguistics played a prominent role in shaping maternal biological ancestry. However, at an inter-population level, geography was found to be a more influential determinant. Comparisons of Otomí genetic variation allow us to reconstruct the ethnic history of this group, and to place it within a broader-based Mesoamerican history. Supranational Citizenship: (Im)mobility and the Alternative Birth Movement in Mexico by Rosalynn Adeline Vega A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Joint Doctor of Philosophy with the University of California, San Francisco in Medical Anthropology in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Nancy Scheper-Hughes, Co-chair Professor Charles Leslie Briggs, Co-chair Professor Charis Thompson Professor Ian Whitmarsh Spring 2016 1 ABSTRACT My research analyzes how the remaking anew of tradition—the return to“traditional” birthing arts (home birth, midwife-assisted birth, water birth, “natural” birth)—has resulted in the commodification of indigenous culture and the re-inscription of racial inequalities on the one hand, and, despite feminist rhetoric about women’s liberation from (masculine) biomedical hegemony, the reconfiguring of parent-child bonds in ways that again place the burden of correctly producing future members of society on women’s shoulders. I focus on the extremes of contemporary Mexican society—disenfranchised indigenous families and members of the global meritocracy—and in doing so, I demonstrate how citizenship retains value for some while being rendered irrelevant for others. More specifically, I argue that the privileged do not position themselves as citizens through claims to public resources; instead, they accumulate cultural capital through privatized services. Through an examination of processes of racialization and patterns of bioconsumption, I critique the broad application of the concept of citizenship, and make a case for the consideration of the bioconsumer (individuals for whom market-based consumption of medical services plays a formative role in how their identities are syncretically portrayed and perceived). -

Journal of American Studies of Turkey 20 (2004) : 3-16 Critical Mestizaje and National Identity: Discourse of Difference in Americo Paredes María Herrera-Sobek The Mexican American scholar Américo Paredes has been a pioneer in formulating theories related to the concept of mestizaje (race mixture), the nation state, nationality, and nationalism through a discourse of difference. The author of the ground-breaking work “With a Pistol in His Hand”: A Border Ballad and Its Hero (1958), numerous scholarly articles, as well as a collection of poems Between Two Worlds (written in the 1930s-1950s but published in 1991) and the novel George Washington Gómez (written in the 1930s but published in 1990) left in these works a rich vein of theoretical formulations not heretofore fully explored. Embedded in both his creative works and his scholarly production are issues of critical mestizaje as well as theories that will surface much later in the 1980s and 1990s decades articulated by such theorists as Homi Bhabha and Benedict Anderson among others. In this paper I examine the theoretical concept of “critical mestizaje” and posit how Paredes from the 1930s through the 1990s was heavily involved in developing theoretical paradigms through his writings that emphasized discourse of difference linked to ethnic and racial categories. His main theory details how much of Chicano cultural production, such as the Mexican/Chicano corrido or ballad is based on “culture clash” between the Mexican Americans indigenous to the American Southwest and Anglo American colonizers or what Chela Sandoval would later call “oppositional consciousness.” Paredes’s concept of mestizaje antedates some of the borderland theories posited by Gloria Anzaldúa in her book Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987).
