SOCIO-TRANSLATION STUDIES ACCORDING TO ALICJA IWAŃSKA* Abstract The article focuses on cultural translation and its ethical consequences according to Alicja Iwańska (1918–1996), a Polish sociologist and writer. In her book Świat przetłumaczony [The Translated World] (1968) Iwańska uses the figure of the translator-traitor while trying to translate Mexico conquered by the Spanish to Poland ruined by the Nazis and Stalinists—the book was the literary aftermath of her fieldwork on the culture of the Indian Mazahua of a secluded Mexican village. The scientific aftermath of the same research was her anthropological monograph Purgatory and Utopia. A Mazahua Indian Village of Mexico (1971). The first book, written in Polish, was described by the author as “a fictionalised account”, and a “literary output”; the second, written in English, was designed as “relatively free from the interference of extra-scientific emotional elements”. For Alicja Iwańska, before the Second World War a philosophy student under Władysław Tatarkiewicz, translating a culture is an ethical problem; the complex relations between truth, falsity and fiction in intercultural translation are coupled with the issues of expressibility in a specific narrative (literary versus scientific) and a specific language (Polish versus English). Iwańska’s books, read again 50 years after their creation, seem to be a forgotten link of Polish translation theory. -

Woodbury University of Texas at Austin We give a narrative description of our ten-year path into the elaborate tonal systems of the Chatino languages (Otomanguean; Oaxaca, Mexico), and of some of the methods we have used and recommend, illustrated with specific examples. The work, ongoing at the time of writing, began when one of us (Cruz), a native speaker of San Juan Quiahije Chatino, entered the University of Texas at Austin as a Ph.D. student and formed, together with the other of us (Woodbury), a professor there, the Chatino Language Documentation Project, ultimately incorporating five other Ph.D. students and two other senior researchers. We argue for the importance of an interplay among speaker and non-speaker perspectives over the long course of work; a mix of introspection, hypothesis-testing, natural speech record- ing, transcription, translation, grammatical analysis, and dictionary-making as research methods and activities; an emphasis on community training as an active research context; the simultaneous study of many varieties within a close-knit language family to leverage progress; and the use of historical-comparative methods to get to know tonal systems and the roles they play at a deeper level. 0. Del nombre Los Chatinos se llaman a si mismos Kitsecha`tnio los términos cha`tnio, cha’tña y tasa ’jnyaJ son variantes usadas en distintas comunidades para designar su propia lengua que significa “palabra trabajosa”. Localización El territorio chatino se encuentra enclavado en la Sierra Madre del Sur, en el estado de Oaxaca. Se extiende de suroeste a noroeste en el Distrito de Juquila.La población chatina se concentra sobre todo en los municipios de Santos Reyes Nopala, San Juan Quiahije, San Miguel Panixtlahuaca, Santa Cruz Zenzontepec, San Juan Lachao, Santa María Temaxcaltepec, Tataltepec de Valdés, Santiago, Yaitepec, Santa Catarina, Yololtepec y Juchatenango. Las tomas en este archivo, provienen de las últimas cuatro localidades mencionadas. Aspectos económicos Su actividad económico principal es la agricultura tradicional de temporal. Dedican una pequeña porción de su tierra al cultivo de café. Alternan con su ciclo de producción la estrategia migratoria temporal a las fincas cafetaleras del Distrito de Juquila en donde se contratan como jornaleros para el corte de café, o a la costa, para trabajar en las plantaciones agrícolas. Organización social Sus autoridades tradicionales están organizadas en un sistema de cargos con funciones civiles y religiosas. La máxima autoridad es el consejo de ancianos que representa la mayor autoridad moral en el pueblo. El trabajo del campo liga a los chatinos con la tierra, la familia y la comunidad, proporcionando así las bases de su pertenencia social, (el individuo) hombre o mujer existen como miembros de una sociedad familiar, en la que se desarrolla su vida física, productiva y en la que se hereda el derecho de usos de tierra comunal. -

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Mazahua Project THE HOUSING CRISIS The present day housing crisis in the ZMVM has its roots in industrialization processes beginning in the 1930s and the subsequent influx of migrant workers to the city. (Romero, 11) The volatile population growth in Mexico City did not cease until the 1970s. Within the last 60 years the city grew from a population of 1.7 million to a population today of over 20 million inhabitants. (Meffert, 324.) The urban housing problem grew from the core city's inability to absorb the masses of migrants streaming into Mexico City. As early as colonial times, the densely populated backyards in the historic centre of Mexico City provided housing for the poor, known as "vecinidades." The intensive modernization programs that followed in the post-revolutionary years combined with increasing demand for rental housing led to the development of often government-funded "conjuntos habitationales." (Ribbeck, 56-62.) These public housing projects aimed at combatting housing shortages would fail to meet increasing demand, as would the private supply of multi-family rental housing due to the implementation of rent control and foreign building regulations. (Meffert, 326.) INFORMAL HOUSING These prevailing forces led to the rapid and somewhat unavoidable development of self-built "colonias populares," illegal irregularly founded, self-help settlements. Today, over 9 million people or half of the metropolitan population live in the colonias populares (one million in newer, 6 million in older and 2 million in very old low-income areas.) Barrios populares form a broad ring around the city core extending over 650 sq. -

Mexico Mission Trip 2019 La Casa de Cristo Information Packet ! Join La Casa de Cristo Lutheran Church for a mission trip to central Mexico with Mazahua Valley Ministries! The theme of this year’s trip is, Build the Church, as we explore the opportunity from God to help plant a Lutheran Church in Atlacomulco, Mexico. Don’t miss this great opportunity to participate in the Kingdom of God! This mission of this trip is focused on laying the foundation for a new Lutheran church plant in Atlacomulco, Mexico through Mazahua Valley Ministries. Our work will be about community building in anticipation of the new church. Relationships will be developed with the community through a summer sports clinic which we will lead and by visiting and learning about the work of Mazahua Valley Ministries in the area. La Casa de Cristo is blessed by this opportunity. DATES The trip is July 26 - August 2, 2019. Participants must also commit to team planning meetings leading up to the trip (see below). COST This is an all-inclusive church-group mission. The price of $1,425 (by deadline) includes round trip air transportation from Phoenix to Mexico City, all ground transportation in Mexico, lodging in Mexico City and Atlacomulco, all meals in Mexico (exception: meals at the airport), safe purified drinking water, and mission support for the local church ministries in the Mazahua Valley. The Genetic History Of The Otomi In The Central Mexican Valley Abstract The Otomí, or Hñäñhü, is an indigenous ethnic group in the Central Mexican Valley that has been historically marginalized since before Spanish colonization. To investigate the extent by which historical, geographic, linguistic, and cultural influences shaped biological ancestry, I analyzed the genetic variation of 224 Otomí individuals residing in thirteen Otomí villages. Results indicate that the majority of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes belong to the four major founding lineages, A2, B2, C1, and D1, reflecting an overwhelming lack of maternal admixture with Spanish colonizers. Results also indicate that at an intra-population level, neither geography nor linguistics played a prominent role in shaping maternal biological ancestry. However, at an inter-population level, geography was found to be a more influential determinant. Comparisons of Otomí genetic variation allow us to reconstruct the ethnic history of this group, and to place it within a broader-based Mesoamerican history.
