THIS FEARFUL THING
A new novel has just been published detailing the little- known story of Ann Camell of Southwold, who, in 1645 was accused of bewitching a sailor, William Whitton.
‘This Fearful Thing’ by Reydon author L M West is extensively researched and tells the sometimes harrowing story of a woman accused of witchcraft, not once, but three times and her fight to survive. Ann was the wife of Thomas Camell, whose family once owned what is now Sutherland House in Southwold High Street and the novel is set very much in Southwold and the surrounding landscape as it may have been 400 years ago.
‘This Fearful Thing’ is available on Amazon as a paperback at £8.99 and Kindle version at £2.99 and also from Halesworth Book Shop, Southwold Books, Aldeburgh Bookshop, Beccles Books and Browsers Books, Woodbridge.

April was very dry. There were only 0.33 inches of rain with 0.25 There have been far fewer moths than expected in the trap and of this falling on the 30th of the month. The end of April was also the predominant butterflies seem to be red admiral and peacock cold with several ground frosts in the morning. The strong winds continued into mid-May, and it has also been much wetter with 2.32 inches of rain so far. Sitting outside has not been comfortable although a couple of evenings ago I was reacquainted with the seat in the front garden and enjoyed a glass of red wine whilst watching the cattle and calves in the fields opposite. Still no sign of the barn owl but the marsh harrier continues to fly effortlessly in search of its prey. I have also seen an occasional hobby track down the coast from Easton Bavents. It is always good to hear the whitethroat, a pair of which have taken up residence in the brambles opposite the house.
The marsh daffodils have died back, and cow parsley is showing well, particularly where I have cut back the alexanders, a plant introduced by the Romans, which appears to be thriving all over The calls of the various warblers have become louder over recent town. The green alkanet is in full bloom, and I think the bright days. The loudest is the Cetti’s warbler, an elusive bird, the sedge blue flowers are particularly spectacular this time of the year, warblers are more common but still rarely sit still long enough it really should be renamed blue alkanet.
