PRESS RELEASE 3 April 2019 PRESS RELEASE 3 April 2019 Dutch landmark production Soldier Of Orange – The Musical to come to the UK Producer secures UK location to build innovative theatre for Autumn 2020 The audience is immersed into the action through a revolutionary ‘SceneAround’ 360-degree rotating set design system After thorough research in the UK, NEW Productions, the producer of Soldier of Orange - The Musical, the acclaimed historical Dutch theatre experience staged in a revolutionary 360-degree ‘surround set’ - has found an ideal location in London’s Royal Docks, opposite London’s City Airport. Subject to planning permission, the producer expects to start building their innovative new theatre by the end of 2019, with the aim of opening a UK-version of Soldier of Orange – The Musical in the second half of 2020: soldieroforange.com Jeremy Brock, Theu Boermans & Fred Boot at the new UK site. Photo by Jim Marks The production has been seen by over 2.8 million people in Holland, has broken all Dutch theatre records and celebrated eight years of sold-out shows in October last year. Soldier of Orange - The Musical is based on the autobiography of Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema (born on this day, 3 April 1917), a renowned Dutch resistance fighter and British RAF war pilot, who chronicled his remarkable WWII experiences. His book was also adapted for a Dutch international hit film in 1977 directed PRESS RELEASE by Paul Verhoeven (Basic Instinct, RoboCop, Total Recall, Elle), which was nominated for a Golden Globe and starred Rutger Hauer in the title role. Soldier of Orange’s pioneering use of ‘SceneAround’ staging – a revolutionary theatre technology especially engineered for this production and to be used in the UK for the first time - pulls the audience into the story delivering a unique theatrical experience. The UK production will be directed by renowned Dutch director Theu Boermans. The book is written by Edwin de Vries, with music and lyrics written by Americans Tom Harriman and Pamela Phillips Oland. This first English production is adapted for the British stage by Jeremy Brock. The pioneering ‘SceneAround’ stage of Soldier Of Orange – The Musical during construction in Holland. Photo by Joris van Bennekom In the Netherlands, the production opened to great acclaim in October 2010. Set in a converted airplane hangar at a former military air base just half an hour outside of Amsterdam, the audience finds itself in a traditional raked 1,100 seat auditorium. As the story unfolds, the entire seating platform rotates along a 360-degree panoramic set, by turns revealing an actual 150-foot-wide coastline with sea, sand and rainstorms, student dorms, interrogation cells, a palace and an outdoor scene with a real DC3 Dakota Airplane. Soldier of Orange – The Musical is produced in the Netherlands by NEW Productions and was co- produced by Robin de Levita. Producer Fred Boot of NEW Productions commented: "With the Dutch production playing throughout 2019, we have explored new markets for this chapter of WWII history for the past 3 years. London was the location of our Queen in exile during the war. The UK plays a significant role in our history and this WWII story. Therefore, the UK has always had our priority and we are very pleased with this development for such a relevant location. The production and script are slightly adapted for an international audience, to ensure that it reflects the show as it has been embraced in Holland. We are looking forward to sharing this universal story of a group of friends, forced by war to make life-changing choices. It is a celebration of the time that the Allies came together to fight for our freedom and democracy.” To register for the pre-sale and to receive regular updates prior to the opening in Autumn 2020 visit the website: soldieroforange.com Click here to see trailer. A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Ingrid Frederika DeSanto 2018 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Righteous Citizens: The Lynching of Johan and Cornelis DeWitt, The Hague, Collective Violence, and the Myth of Tolerance in the Dutch Golden Age, 1650-1672 by Ingrid Frederika DeSanto Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles Professor Margaret C Jacob, Chair In The Hague, on August 20 th , 1672, the Grand Pensionary of Holland, Johan DeWitt and his brother Cornelis DeWitt were publicly killed, their bodies mutilated and hanged by the populace of the city. This dissertation argues that this massacre remains such an unique event in Dutch history, that it needs thorough investigation. Historians have focused on short-term political causes for the eruption of violence on the brothers’ fatal day. This work contributes to the existing historiography by uncovering more long-term political and social undercurrents in Dutch society. In doing so, issues that may have been overlooked previously are taken into consideration as well.

Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be chall enged and removed. (November 2008) While there is no general agreement upon the greatest film, many publications an d organizations have tried to determine the films considered the best. Each film listed here has been mentioned in a notable survey, whether a popular poll, or a poll among film reviewers. Many of these sources focus on American films or we re polls of English-speaking film-goers, but those considered the greatest withi n their respective countries are also included here. Many films are widely consi dered among the best ever made, whether they appear at number one on each list o r not. For example, many believe that Orson Welles' Citizen Kane is the best mov ie ever made, and it appears as #1 on AFI's Best Movies list, whereas The Shawsh ank Redemption is #1 on the IMDB Top 250, whilst Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is #1 on the Empire magazine's Top 301 List. None of the surveys that produced these citations should be viewed as a scientif ic measure of the film-watching world. Each may suffer the effects of vote stack ing or skewed demographics. Internet-based surveys have a self-selected audience of unknown participants. The methodology of some surveys may be questionable. S ometimes (as in the case of the American Film Institute) voters were asked to se lect films from a limited list of entries.

True, his portrayal of replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner i I'm always shocked when my favorite artists, be they actors, writers, musicians, or painters, don't list MY favorite examples of their work as their own. That movie is awesome! Then she goes nuts and almost kills the baby! Also, early in his 20s, Hauer has a short, tempestuous relationship with a chaotic Swiss woman that results in a daughter that he didn't anticipate. And I wasn't at all interested in who he married or what kids he might have had. I was inspired to read this after reading the completely off-the-wall interview with him at the end of Future Noir by Paul M.

‘With a stretched arm. Like Superman, not like Hitler’. The Politics of Commemorative Irreverence in Astronaut van Oranje (2013) by Andy Fierens and Michaël Brijs ‘Met gestrekte arm. Zoals Superman, niet zoals Hitler’. De uitdagingen van het culturele geheugen in Astronaut van Oranje (2013) van Andy Fierens en Michaël Brijs Jan Lensen, Freie Universität Berlin Abstract. This essay offers an analysis of the aesthetical and political implications of the seemingly random use of names of figures from Belgian collaborationist history in the novel Astronaut van Oranje (2013) by Flemish authors Andy Fierens and Michaël Brijs. More specifically, it investigates the framing of the memory of World War II in Belgium by means of a satirical fantasy story that fuses elements from the dystopian imagination, science fiction, Gothic horror, and popular culture. Drenched in satire, hyperbole, absurdities, coarse humor, and blatant clichés, the novel eschews historiographical relevance and deliberately ignores the sensibilities that govern public and political discourses about this war past. By doing so, so I argue, it offers a provocative engagement with established practices in both Belgian and Flemish cultural memory, implementing what I will call a ‘politics of commemorative irreverence’. Keywords: Second World War, collaborationism, cultural memory, Andy Fierens, dystopia, science fiction, satire / Tweede Wereldoorlog, collaboratie, cultureel geheugen, Andy Fierens, dystopie, science fiction, satire Journal of Dutch Literature, 6.2 (2015), 37-58 Jan Lensen 38 Introduction The use of the comic in cultural representations of suffering and perpetration seems governed by a stringent ethical imperative. While the comical presentation of affliction is considered the privilege of those subjected to it (the insiders and, by extension, their descendants), the permission to laugh at perpetrators is tied to the condition of not being one (the outsiders, although this category is obviously much more difficult to demarcate).

‘BEST CHRISTMAS PARTY EVER’ PRODUCTION BIOS LEWIS CHESLER (Executive Producer) – Lewis Chesler is one of the first producers of material for the alternative television market and since has produced TV shows that stretch the boundaries of the medium beyond the conventional programming of the standard broadcasters. In a field where innovation is often discouraged, Chesler has nonetheless managed extraordinary success. He is now known for Independent features, art action pieces and award winning action adventure pieces for the family. A native of Cleveland, Chesler attended Amherst College, studying cultural history and graduating with highest honors after writing his thesis on television’s impact on political consciousness in the mass society. He worked his way through college, spending summers in the Cleveland steel mills and his winter vacations working on merchant vessels, traveling around the world. Following college, he joined the Peace Corps. In the mid-70’s, Chesler became artistic director of the Long Beach Performing Arts Centre. He produced a series of plays there, starring, among others, Stockard Channing, Jill Clayburgh, Stacey Keach, James Whitmore and Eddie Albert. He also booked the opera house, the sports arena, two theaters and the rock concert forum. He started his television career with a series of variety shows and “The Hitchhiker” series for HBO. Chesler conceived the show, its style, look and direction and brought together the main creative elements, including Academy Award®-nominated writers and actors and internationally prominent directors. One of the most enduring aspects of Chesler’s efforts during “The Hitchhiker” was the encouragement of industry acceptance of cable programming as a venue to showcase top film directors and actors such as Paul Verhoeven, Phillip Noyce, Wayne Wang, Willem Dafoe, Klaus Kinski, Kirstie Alley and Helen Hunt.
