The two phenomena fed into each other and spiraled out of control. In a matter of months, a veritable revolution changed the way music was produced, played and heard. The old rock stars were forgotten and new rock stars began setting new trends. As far as white popular music goes, it was a sort of Renaissance after a few years of burgeoisie icons (think: Bowie), conservative sounds (country-rock, southern boogie) and exploitation of minorities (funk, reggae). During the 1970s alternative rock had survived in niches that were highly intellectual, namely German rock and progressive-rock (particularly the Canterbury school). They were all but invisible to the masses. 1976 was the year when most of those barriers (between "low" and "high" rock, between "intellectual" and "populist", between "conservative" and "progressive", between "star" and "anti-star") became not only obsolete but meaningless. -

The City Zero Hour The Rocket Epilogue [About this etext] PROLOGUE:The Illustrated Man IT was a warm afternoon in early September when I first met the Illustrated Man. Walking along an asphalt road, I was or the final leg of a two weeks’ walking tour of Wisconsin. Late in the afternoon I stopped, ate some pork, beans, and a doughnut, and was preparing to stretch out and read when the Illustrated Man walked over the hill and stood for a moment against the sky. I didn’t know he was Illustrated then. I only knew that he was tall, once well muscled, but now, for some reason, going to fat. I recall that his arms were long, and the hands thick, but that his face was like a child’s, set upon a massive body. He seemed only to sense my presence, for he didn’t look directly at me when he spoke his first words: “Do you know where I can find a job?” “I’m afraid not,” I said. “I haven’t had a job that’s lasted in forty years,” he said. Though it was a hot late afternoon, he wore his wool shirt buttoned tight about his neck. His sleeves were rolled and buttoned down over his thick wrists. -

10 Años De Una Performance Flamenca: Morente Y Sonic Youth En El Ca2m
10 YEARS SINCE A FLAMENCO PERFORMANCE: MORENTE AND SONIC YOUTH AT THE CA2M Abstract The year 2010 was significant for flamenco: it enters at the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage and Enrique Morente dies. Besides, we should add a singular fact, Morente performed with two members of Sonic Youth, on 2 of February, an unusual performance at the Art Center May 2 of Mostoles, where “primitive” flamenco and new flamenco dialogue with the experimental rock band from New York. Keywords Postmodernism; flamenco; conceptual art; fluxus; performance; experimental music. Ucoarte. Rating: 7.9 I'm looking up from an interview with William Burroughs, at a mariachi group as they smile and try to find their balance on a downtown train. Their gestures of voice, guitar, and rhythm are promptly drowned in brake drones, the shuddering of the decrepit old tracks, and plastic-protected ads for acne surgery and model-proffered Budweisers. All I can hear through the din is the disquieting roar of Mars and singer China Burg's sinister slurring: "What I put together, I can take apart." Since I refuse to spend the $30 for a CD copy of No New York, I'm grateful to have the complete recordings of Mars (count one seven-inch, four tracks from NNY, and one EP-- a half-hour in total) howling through my headphones. For those keeping track, since the digital age, another complete discography of Mars already came out on the Atavistic label, but with vague sonic tweaking by Foetus scraper Jim Thirlwell. Purists might argue that since band member Mark Cunningham used a different master tape for transferring the Mars EP (even restoring its binaural recording quality), it's still not going to sound like the "murkier" frequencies of the original wax. From the metallic sparkle of the midnight blue card sleeve to the insightful commentary offered by the remaining members (Sumner Crane passed away earlier this year), this limited edition package is too exquisite to overlook, no matter how distressing the aural mess splattered inside. -

www.zerecords.com UNDER THE INFLUENCE / WHITE SPIRIT The 21st century has produced a new generation of young contenders of all kinds, who have, within months, spread a new string of names across the planet such as The Rapture, Playgroup, LCD Sound system, Liars, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Radio 4 and the likes, just to name a few. Once again the heat was initiated in NYC, even though its Lower East Side epicenter « cleaned up » by Giuliani and Bloomberg, has moved a few blocks east and across the river to Brooklyn and Williamsburg. It might be wise to remind the younger ones among us that the origins of this new musical cycle is for the most part rooted in the NO WAVE movement of which James Siegfried aka James White, aka James Chance is undoubtedly one of its most prominent figures. New York City was hands down the artistic telluric center of the second half of the 20th century, especially from the 70’s, on. Rising from the ashes of the Velvet Un- derground, a slew of local bands redefined the aesthetics of rock’n’roll which the merchants of the temple hastened to rename under various designations, such as Punk, New Wave, No Wave, Jazz-Funk or even Disco and Disco- Punk without forgetting to mention the original Electro designation pioneered by the band Suicide. One of the indispensable and emblematic figures of the mid-70’s is of course James Chance. James Siegfried, born in Milwaukee in 1953, began his musical journey on the piano at the age of seven. -
Dancecult 8(1) Reviews
Reviews Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor 1980–1983 Tim Lawrence Durham: Duke University Press, 2016. ISBN: 978-0-8223-6202-9 RRP: US$27.95 <http://dx.doi.org/10.12801/1947-5403.2016.08.01.05> Charles de Ledesma University of East London, UK Cultural historian Tim Lawrence’s first book Love Saves the Day adopted a chronological approach to East Coast disco’s dramatic arc through the 1970s. Then his follow-up Hold On to Your Dreams widened the timeline, honing in on a valuable contributor to New York’s downtown music scene—cellist and composer Arthur Russell. While LStD ranged widely across many spaces, DJs, artists, assorted characters and issues, the Russell biography was an intimate portrait of a key player, who died from AIDS-related complications in 1992. Life and Death on the New York Dance Floor 1980–1983 (henceforth Life and Death) is the third segment in Lawrence’s New York project. Now he narrows the timeline and brings a forensic examination to just four years in the party scene. On the title, Lawrence explains, “the reference to life is intended to evoke the way that New York party culture didn’t merely survive the hyped death of disco but positively flourished in its wake”. And he clearly and convincingly argues that the short period was one characterised by a stirring artistic ferment, across music, art, dance and club space innovation. Lawrence explains: “instead of depicting the 1980–1983 period as a mere bridge that connected the big genre stories of 1970s disco and 1980s house and techno, I submitted to its kaleidoscope logic, took my foot off the historical metronome, and decided to take it—the book—to the bridge” (ix).
