Citizen observatories are a relatively recent form of citizen science. As part of the flood risk management strategy 10 of the Brenta-Bacchiglione catchment, a citizen observatory for flood risk management has been proposed and is currently being implemented. Citizens are involved through monitoring water levels and obstructions and providing other relevant information through mobile apps, where the data are assimilated with other sensor data in a hydrological-hydraulic model used in early warning. A cost benefit analysis of the citizen observatory was undertaken to demonstrate the value of this approach in monetary terms. Although not yet fully operational, the citizen observatory is assumed to decrease the social 15 vulnerability of the flood risk. By calculating the hazard, exposure and vulnerability of three flood scenarios (required for flood risk management planning by the EU Directive on Flood Risk Management) with and without the proposed citizen observatory, it is possible to evaluate the benefits in terms of the average annual avoided damage costs.

  • Palaeohydrography and Early Settlements in Padua (Italy)
Il Quaternario Italian Journal of Quaternary Sciences 23(2Bis), 2010 - Volume Speciale - 387-400 PALAEOHYDROGRAPHY AND EARLY SETTLEMENTS IN PADUA (ITALY) Paolo Mozzi1, Silvia Piovan1, Sandro Rossato1, Maurizio Cucato2, Tiziano Abbà2, Alessandro Fontana1 1 Dipartimento di Geografia, Università di Padova, Padova 2 Geologist, free-lancer Corresponding author: P. Mozzi <[email protected]> ABSTRACT: Mozzi P. et al., Palaeohydrography and early settlements in Padua (Italy). (IT ISSN 0394-3356) This paper concerns the palaeohydrographic and geomorphological evolution of the alluvial plain around Padua during the last millen- nia, and the relative implications for the development of early settlements in the present urban area. The first archaeological evidences in Padua date to the late Bronze Age (1400–1000 BC). Since the early Iron Age (9th century BC) the settlement experienced a progressive expansion and in the 6th century BC it was already an important urban centre. In the 2nd century BC Padua became a Roman municipium, being one of the most important cities in NE Italy. Latin historians wrote that it was crossed by a large river, called the Meduacus, which was identified with the Brenta River in previous archaeological studies. The Brenta River is an important Alpine river that now flows about 5 km NE of Padua. Since the Middle Ages the Bacchiglione River, a minor course partly fed by ground-water, has been flowing within the city centre along two characteristic meanders; it was artificially diverted only in the first half of the 20th century in order to protect the city from floodings. As the recent urban expansion limits the possibility to investigate the urban area with remote sensing and field survey, the investiga- tion focuses on the alluvial plain at the western outskirts of Padua.

VILLA BEATRICE D’ESTE Management Plan For the future valorisation and D.T4.2.1 conservation of the heritage site and its medieval ruins Prepared by: Valentina Gamba Sergio Calò Enzo Moretto VENETIAN CLUSTER Tel: +39. 0445 607742 [email protected] [email protected] Headquarters: Sestiere San Marco 2065 – 30124 Venezia (VE) Registered Office: Viale dell’Industria, 37 – 36100 Vicenza (VI) Italy Vat Code IT 03904910241 2 FOREWORD The present Management Plan was developed within the framework of the European project RUINS, funded by the European Territorial Cooperation Programme Interreg Central Europe. The aim of the RUINS project is to give new life to medieval ruins in Central Europe, valorising them and identifying good practices for their sustainable management and for the development of productive activities that are in line with their cultural, historic and artistic values, in the perspective of their long-term conservation. The monumental complex of Villa Beatrice d’Este was selected as a case study by the project due to the presence of medieval ruins on which, during the 17th century, the villa was built. The case study represents an opportunity to investigate how medieval heritage can make a strong contribution to the valorisation of a complex and stratified heritage site. We thank the Province of Padua, owner of the site, and Enzo Moretto, president of Butterfly Arc Ltd, current manager of the Museum of Villa Beatrice, for the support provided in the collection of data and in the drafting of the plan. 3 INTRODUCTION According to the UNESCO guidelines for the management of World Heritage sites, a management plan is a tool aimed to guarantee and provide coordination for the strategic protection of a heritage site in the long- term1.

  • There Were in Padua Almost As Many Hebrew Printers As Hebrew Books” the Sixteenth Century Hebrew Press in Padua1
CHAPTER NINE “THERE WERE IN PADUA ALMOST AS MANY HEBREW PRINTERS AS HEBREW BOOKS” THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY HEBREW PRESS IN PADUA1 The sixteenth century is the most important and influential in the history of Hebrew printing. It is characterized by an exponential growth in the number of books printed and, in Italy where the first Hebrew books were printed in about 1469–70, by great presses in cities such as Mantua and Venice. These presses have to their credit numerous achievements; the quality of their imprints are appreciated and often unequaled to the present. Inevitably, however, not all presses were equally successful or memorable. These latter presses, not surprisingly, do not receive the same attention as their larger and more successful counterparts. Among the smaller sixteenth century print-shops issuing Hebrew books is one in Padua, which put out a mere two books. Padua’s failure to become an important Hebrew printing center is somewhat surprising, for it had advantages that would have suggested otherwise. A look at this little known print shop is of value not only for its own sake, recalling a less well remembered moment in the history of the Hebrew book, but also because, for the brief period that it was active, the Padua press was a microcosm of the confluence of varied interests often found in the Hebrew book industry in Italy during the Renais- sance. As we shall see, the authors of the books printed in Padua were Sephardim, the printer was an Ashkenazi, and the press belonged to an Italian non-Jew. Padua is situated twelve meters above sea level in the lower Venetian plain between the Brenta and the Bacchiglione rivers, about twenty kilometers from the lagoon of Venice.
