McLeod & Hawley's (1964) professionalism index and the Path-Goal leadership theory are used as a framework for this study. Professionally oriented newsworkers were found to be positively related to relationship-oriented leadership behaviors. A positive correlation between the professionals and the task-oriented leadership behaviors was also found. Findings suggest that effective supervisors exhibit both relationship- and task-oriented leadership behaviors in retaining professionally oriented employees. 4 SUPERVISOR LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR'S EFFECT ON TV NEWSWORKER PROFESSIONALISM SUPERVISOR LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR'S EFFECT ON TELEVISION NEWSWORKER PROFESSIONALISM This study investigates the influence of supervisor leadership behavior on employee professionalism in television news organizations. A high level of professionalism is important to a television news organization, as it will aid in the effective execution of the organization's goals. The perception of a "professional" news organization is important in gaining the public's trust and acceptance (McLeod & Hawley, 1964). Moreover, a professionally oriented newsroom can better serve the mass media audience (Hodges, 1986). Leaders within news organizations must develop their management style to promote professionalism.Thus, an understanding of effective leadership behaviors and their effect on professionalism will benefit the overall success of television news organizations. Professionalism A profession refers to an occupation with special characteristics that set it apart from a trade or business. Professional occupations are afforded a higher social status (Hodges, 1986). Pound (1953) claimed that for an occupation to be classified as professional it requires specialized learning, it must be an occupation in which things are practiced (i.e. things are done as an art), and it must operate in the spirit of public service. There is an ongoing controversy over whether journalism is a true profession or merely a craft. McLeod and Hawley (1964) believe that journalism is partly professionalized but lacks some important ingredients of a true profession.They developed a measure of professional orientation for journalistsa professional orientation index. Using an anonymous questionnaire, McLeod & Hawley (1964) surveyed newspaper editorial employees. Summing across the 12 1 4 SUPERVISOR LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOR'S EFFECT ON TV NEWSWORKER PROFESSIONALISM professional questions on the survey and then subtracting the total of the 12 non-professional questions calculated each employee's professional orientation score.McLeod and Hawley concluded some newsworkers are more or less professionalized than others. McLeod and Hawley's measure of professionalism has been used by other researchers to explore relationships between professionalism levels and a range of demographic and attitudinal variables within television news journalists.Examples of such studies include Weinthal & O'Keefe's (1974) analysis of professionalism among broadcast journalists in Denver, Idsvoog & Hoyt's (1977) research of professionalism and job satisfaction at Wisconsin network affiliated television stations, Wright's (1976) study of Canadian broadcast journalists, and Henningham's (1984) research comparing Australian and U.S. broadcast journalists. Professionalism within a television news organization is generally seen as an asset. Within their study, McLeod and Hawley (1964) suggested that in defining a job, a professional person should place heavy emphasis on service, intellectual activity, autonomy, and influence. They defined professional journalists as those who are generally more concerned with ethical standards, more educated, more critical of their own employer, more independent on the job, less likely to take a non-journalism job, and less concerned about money and prestige. A staff of professionally oriented journalists inherently benefits the news organization and the goals of the station. Hohenberg (1973) claimed that professional journalists perform a unique and essential service to society, because they believe strongly in ethical practices such as protecting sources, and they subscribe to occupational norms such as objectivity. Isdvoog and Hoyt (1977) concluded that television journalists with a high level of professionalism performed more skillfully than those with low professionalism. (Evening Star, 3 Aug 1924, p. 11) The first half of the twentieth century saw two important developments in the District’s (and probably nation’s) animal-control situation (wandering farm animals having already largely disappeared): The regular threat, or at least fear, of rabies outbreaks largely disappeared, converting homeless dogs from dangers to pitiable waifs in need of help; Citizen-organized shelters, oriented more to the welfare than control of strays, bred and flourished. These shelters cared for cats as well as dogs. These trends grew in urbanized Washington until they overwhelmed the traditional pound operations and ultimately subsumed them. Important official studies and new laws and regulations of the late 1930s and early ‘40s cemented these changes. Sources: For this period our sources remain the same as the previous one but generally become scantier. Commissioners Annual Reports shrank back to one volume by the early 1920s and WHS annual reports have been lost. These advances have challenged traditional media organizations to adapt the way they deliver content to stay relevant to readers, fulfill their missions, and sustain their work. In 2006, the Knight Foundation launched the Knight News Challenge (KNC) to invest in new ideas and individuals to support innovation in news and information. Since its launch, the KNC has provided more than $48 million to fund 139 projects in the United States and around the world. 3 / 31 To better understand how the Challenge impacted winners1 , their projects, and the broader fields of news, media, and journalism, Arabella Advisors conducted a retrospective evaluation of the last 10 years of the KNC (2006– 2016)2. Through this research, we identified ways the Challenge has impacted the field and its winners, including: Enabling and Advancing Innovators in Journalism and the Media The KNC helped to support a group of individuals and organizations working at the nexus of technology and journalism and, in large part, has kept those individuals within the media field. Of all winners, 84 percent remain in the fields of journalism, technology and, media.

    JOURNALISTS NEED TO KNOW HOW TO WRITE ABOUT SCIENCE – AND WE CAN TEACH THEM By Steve McIlwaine Introduction Australian journalists need to write and broadcast more about science. The view that too little science is available in news media, a constant complaint of the science lobby, is certainly supported by public opinion. Surveys in Australia have mirrored those in Britain and the US in showing repeatedly and overwhelmingly that news audiences want to hear and see more about science in their media and that they consistently rate science as more desirable than politics or sport (Metcalfe and Gascoigne 1995; Lowe 1997). Clearly, it is in the interests of journalism and news organisations to tap this underexploited resource. But journalists appear to avoid science topics and are largely unequipped to handle medical science, environmental science, or any science, in ways that do not distort, misrepresent or misunderstand the science and that do not promote a continuing feud with scientists. Journalism and journalism education are unlikely, for their own good reasons of scepticism, to adopt the broadly uncritical acceptance of the promotion of science communication as a “motherhood statement”. Journalism should – and increasingly does – see science as an important area of human activity that has no inherent precedence over other important activities. But journalism and journalism education can obviously not ignore the fact that science is playing an ever-greater role in the everyday life and concerns of news audiences. Just as journalists have seen it as their responsibility to present information and interpretation in such fields as politics, economics and the legal system, so they are becoming increasingly less able to avoid responsibility for informing about and interpreting science in its manifold forms.

The traditional route of receiving news via a newspaper has evolved into a more digital path, leaving many to question the future of the print publication. This study evaluates the print- and Web-based content of the Houston Chronicle. The researcher adds to the field of research on news media by analyzing the online and print content of the publication, creating a new way to categorize and evaluate the subject matter by placing it into four categories: repetition, adaptation, representation, and unique.
