Chairman: Dr. Leonard Tipton Major Department: Mass Communication It was an offer few newspaper bean counters could resist: update existing, outdated technology with a pagination system and eliminate the composing room while improving quality. Since pagination became a viable option for newspapers in the early to mid-1980s, however, the realities of pagination have forced changes to the sales pitch. Newspapers no longer move toward pagination giddy with thoughts of money savings. Today, newspaper management realizes it might end up spending more for overtime, training, extra personnel and technical support than it saved by eliminating the cutting and pasting in the composing room. However, pagination’s reach goes beyond the newspaper’s bottom line. It is forcing changes in how newspapers operate, what readers see on their doorsteps each day and in what editors seek in new employees. Research has shown that pagination adds to copy editors’ workload and puts more production tasks into the newsroom. The current study sought to establish the level of pagination in the state of Florida and explore issues facing copy editors in today’s vi newsroom. The study also sought to determine how copy editors and designers viewed journalism education. A survey, which was sent either by U.S. mail or e-mail, was used to gauge the level of pagination and to gain insight into the copy desks at Florida newspapers. The survey results also were used to select six newspapers to take part in the in-depth interview portion of the study, which sought greater insight into copy editors’ satisfaction and views on journalism education. To prepare for the survey and interviews, two exploratory research projects were conducted. One project included a focus group of copy editors, and the other was a content analysis of an online discussion board for professional copy editors. The participants have accepted pagination as a fact of newsroom life. They noted the control over the production of the newspaper that pagination put into the newsroom, but they also noted the complexity of some of the computer systems. The participants desired extra computer training, as well as more design and editing training. Overall, they were satisfied with their jobs, but many noted how the hours and pay were drawbacks. Many also mentioned problems keeping the copy desk staffed properly. How copy editing and design duties were performed in the newsroom showed an interesting side of newsroom communication and the problems newsrooms face as design grows in importance. As that design focus grows, so do the technical skills required. However, most of the respondents felt that those who do only design work at newspapers should have a news background. These advances have challenged traditional media organizations to adapt the way they deliver content to stay relevant to readers, fulfill their missions, and sustain their work. In 2006, the Knight Foundation launched the Knight News Challenge (KNC) to invest in new ideas and individuals to support innovation in news and information. Since its launch, the KNC has provided more than $48 million to fund 139 projects in the United States and around the world. 3 / 31 To better understand how the Challenge impacted winners1 , their projects, and the broader fields of news, media, and journalism, Arabella Advisors conducted a retrospective evaluation of the last 10 years of the KNC (2006– 2016)2. Through this research, we identified ways the Challenge has impacted the field and its winners, including: Enabling and Advancing Innovators in Journalism and the Media The KNC helped to support a group of individuals and organizations working at the nexus of technology and journalism and, in large part, has kept those individuals within the media field. Of all winners, 84 percent remain in the fields of journalism, technology and, media.

    An XML model of CSS3 as an XƎLATEX-TEXML-HTML5 stylesheet language S. Sankar, S. Mahalakshmi and L. Ganesh TNQ Books and Journals Chennai Abstract HTML5[1] and CSS3[2] are popular languages of choice for Web development. However, HTML and CSS are prone to errors and difficult to port, so we propose an XML version of CSS that can be used as a standard for creating stylesheets and tem- plates across different platforms and pagination systems. XƎLATEX[3] and TEXML[4] are some examples of XML that are close in spirit to TEX that can benefit from such an approach. Modern TEX systems like XƎTEX and LuaTEX[5] use simplified fontspec macros to create stylesheets and templates. We use XSLT to create mappings from this XML-stylesheet language to fontspec-based TEX templates and also to CSS3. We also provide user-friendly interfaces for the creation of such an XML stylesheet. Style pattern comparison with Open Office and CSS Now a days, most of the modern applications have implemented an XML package format that includes an XML implementation of stylesheet: InDesign has its own IDML[6] (InDesign Markup Language) XML package format and MS Word has its own OOXML[7] format, which is another ISO standard format. As they say ironically, the nice thing about standards is that there are plenty of them to choose from. However, instead of creating one more non-standard format, we will be looking to see how we can operate closely with current standards.     Seven Steps to Regulatory Publication Style With Proc Report Dennis Gianneschi, Amgen Inc., Thousand Oaks, CA ABSTRACT This paper outlines SAS® 9.1.3 coding steps to produce output that meets "Regulatory Publication Style". This style is specific to my clinical trial reporting environment and is composed of requirements coming from two separate sources. The first source is an internal company document called the Style Guide for Regulatory Submission, which all output submitted to a regulatory agency must follow. The second source is the publishing software itself, which processes all output into the regulatory filing. Examples of style guide requirements are: RTF output, Arial font, and that footnotes must attach to the bottom of the table without a box drawn around them. Publishing system requirements are: a) The user controls the type of line breaks, either soft, {\line}, or hard, {\par}, in the title, which controls how much of the title is picked up by the publishing software and put in the table of contents. b) Each line, such as a spanning underline or the line between the table body and the footnotes, must have a minimum thickness of 19 twips. c) Section breaks are not allowed. d) Table title and footnotes cannot be in the header or footnote section of the RTF document. e) Table title must be "free text" on the page and not in a table structure. The seven steps to achieve this style are: 1) proc template, 2) statistical procs (optional), 3) reformat data (optional), 4) add pagination and footnotes, 5) proc report, 6) post process RTF file, and 7) View in WORD® (optional).
