As árvores caem com grande ruído, mas ninguém escuta a floresta que cresce. Antigo Provérbio Zairense AGRADECIMENTOS Uma tese nunca é solta no nada. Síntese de vivências, forma-se no tumulto da vida e tem seu berço no espaço-tempo. No meu caso, tem relação com processos formativos que começaram muito antes do meu ingresso no doutorado. É a culminância e o reinício de um ciclo que teve a contribuição de vários sujeitos, muitos dos quais não serão aqui mencionados, mas aos quais devoto minha gratidão. Outros serão mencionados, aos quais também sou imensamente grato. No começo de tudo, foram: Berg Freitas, Vânia Porto e Júlio Oliveira, que me disseram haver, pelo menos, uma porta. Foi Carlos Queiroz e Domingos Cunha que, em tempos diferentes, me permitiram ver mais longe: visão sem a qual, o fato de haver ou não haver porta, seria indiferente. José Magela e Raimundo Nonato também me indicaram o caminho rumo à porta. Elísio Gomes, Sueli Catarina, Carmilson Brito e Tânia Barbosa, deram alguns passos comigo em direção a ela. Algumas lições éticas e técnicas aprendidas com Nonato Almeida pavimentaram o chão que eu ainda iria pisar. Isso foi decisivo para a edificação da minha formação. Nas horas difíceis da graduação e do mestrado, foi Geovânia Toscano quem se recusou a me deixar desistir. Acreditou em mim em momentos nos quais eu mesmo já não mais acreditava. Desde o início até os dias de hoje, Berg Freitas e Almino Santos me auxiliam na resolução de assuntos pragmáticos do cotidiano. As palavras de Suamy Rafaely e Aizianne Leite ao telefone/e-mail, me distraíram e me aqueceram para que eu não sucumbisse à solidão dos momentos de escrita do texto. Suas piadas e histórias sem pé nem cabeça arejavam-me a mente. O apoio de Lívia Maria também foi importante para mim. Uma amiga querida que, mesmo à distância, esteve presente em minha vida durante este processo que para mim não foi fácil. Nesse mesmo sentido, Lígia Oliveira também é uma amiga querida. No Grecom, tive ajuda de muitas pessoas e de diferentes formas, pessoas dentre as quais destaco: Wani Pereira, Thiago Severo e Thiago Lucena. Em nome destes, cumprimento a todos que ali contribuíram nesta empreitada. Josineide Silveira acompanhou mais de perto algumas questões cruciais. Em alguns momentos, sua presença era sutil, mas eu percebia. Conhecer e conversar com seu Chico Lucas foi presente valioso! Também no Grecom, o contato mais próximo com Juliana Rocha, Lídia Borba, Louize Gabriela, Gledson Moura e Jair Moisés, marcou um tempo curto, porém rico em múltiplos aprendizados. Algumas ideias que escrevi eclodiram de situações nas quais um ou mais de vocês, intencionalmente ou não, me provocaram reflexões. Trocar ideias com Luan Gomes também foi de grande importância. Mônica Reis e Alaim Passos foram grandes parceiros. Na Bahia, José Carlos, Marisa Batista, Cauê Ayô e Dandara Ayô, foram um presente tão inesperado quanto gratificante. Até então, não imaginava que as teias do acaso poderiam se configurar de forma tão especial. Além disso, vocês muitas vezes souberam como distrair a Suiane e ao Mateus, para que eu então pudesse adentrar na solidão do Calabouço e, assim, escrever alguns parágrafos. A palavra “obrigado” não dá conta... Na reta final, foi Romeu Menezes quem me ajudou a planejar o necessário afastamento. Outro parceiro com quem pude contar! Sem minha companheira Suiane Alves e meu filho Mateus Dias, eu sei que, provavelmente, teria terminado esta tese um ano antes. Mas a presença de vocês na minha vida faz tudo ter mais sentido. Utilizando palavras de Adélia Prado, “colore tudo de alaranjado brilhante”. Minha orientadora e amiga Conceição Almeida, a Ceiça. Precisava ser você para me fazer atravessar a porta. Não pensava mais, a esta altura da vida, encontrar alguém com essa capacidade de dedicar-se ao outro, de estimular o crescimento alheio. A tese é também uma forma de homenagear-te, bem como também é um pedido de desculpas pelas frustrações que, inevitavelmente, devo tê-la feito passar. Guardo comigo a pedra (a pedra do vulcão), que para mim passou a ser como aquela a que se refere João Cabral de Melo Neto: “uma pedra de nascença que entranha a alma”. RESUMO A tese constitui o esforço para compreender a noção de autoconhecimento presente nas narrativas autobiográficas de Carl Gustav Jung, publicadas no livro intitulado Memórias, Sonhos, Reflexões (Memórias, Sonhos, Reflexões, 2016). O estudo destes fragmentos autobiográficos indicou que, em Jung, o conhecimento do ser humano sobre si mesmo opera construções do imaginário que nos religam a um sentido de realidade por meio do cultivo de afinidades ancestrais da sensibilidade. Foi este o argumento que persegui. E mais: longe de ser um fechamento narcisista do sujeito em si mesmo, há ali uma noção de autoconhecimento que fomenta um tipo de ética e estética de vida. Das construções do imaginário derivam uma ética do sujeito para consigo mesmo (autoética), endereçando-o ao encontro do outro (socioética). Em grande parte, a saúde deste encontro depende do cultivo de um senso de realidade que só pode ser levado a cabo por meio do engajamento na comunidade humana, com a aceitação das consequências que lhes são inerentes. Há também uma dimensão da ética que remete ao antrhopos (antropoética). Essa atitude em assumir o destino humano demanda, inclusive, uma reaproximação do sujeito com a memória ancestral, com suas forças psíquicas primordiais, que se dá pelo cultivo das afinidades ancestrais da sensibilidade. As sucessivas aproximações ao material de pesquisa foram realizadas com o apoio das ideias de Mircea Eliade (1947, 1992a, 1992b, 2012), Gaston Bachelard (1978, 2008, 2013), Edgar Morin (2008, 2011a, 2013, 2014) e Teresa Vergani (2009), além de outros que podem ser observados ao longo do texto. Em Jung, o autoconhecimento é uma construção lenta e paciente, mediada pela relação com imagens e símbolos, produto complexo e inacabado de uma itinerância que dura toda uma vida, se pensarmos em termos de indivíduo; e séculos, se pensarmos em termos de humanidade. This thesis offers a close reading of two of her ethnographic texts based on fieldwork conducted in Todos Santos Cuchumatán, Guatemala between 1945 and 1947. It then considers Maud’s legacy in Todos Santos in light of the extensive ethnographic canon that has developed in the town from the 1940s to the present day. Finally, I turn to her break with anthropology in the 1950s and subsequent research and writing on analytic psychology. Maud’s unique position in mid-twentieth century American culture points to convergences and divergences between intellectual currents that are often analyzed through an artificial disciplinary isolation, thereby obscuring their common ties. ii The thesis of Addison Nealon Woolsey is approved.
