FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE TOP ATHLETES SCHEDULED TO COMPETE AT DEW TOUR LONG BEACH AT THE FIRST US-BASED GLOBAL OLYMPIC QUALIFYING EVENT FOR SKATEBOARDING Dew Tour Stage Stacked with World’s Best Male & Female Park and Street Skaters, to be Held June 13-16 in Long Beach, Calif. | Event is Free and Open to the Public CLICK HERE FOR MEDIA ASSETS Carlsbad, Calif. (May 28, 2019) -- The annual Dew Tour, presented by MTN DEW and produced by the ​ ​ ​ Adventure Sports Network Group (ASNG), announces event details and top athletes scheduled to compete at the summer event, which will serve as the first-ever U.S.-based Olympic qualifying event for men’s and women’s skateboard Park and Street competitions. More than 300 of the world’s best male and female skateboarders will compete in individual Park and Street events for a chance to win the Dew Tour title, while earning valuable points toward their country’s Olympic skateboarding team. The Olympic qualification system will be based on World ​ Skateboarding Rankings maintained by World Skate, the sport’s International Governing Body. Skateboarders are now earning points by competing in World Skate sanctioned events during the Olympic qualifying period which started January 1 of this year and will end May 31, 2020. Dew Tour, part of the World Skate sanctioned Five-Star Street and Park skateboarding series, will also serve as the last global qualifying event in the U.S. in 2020. Dew Tour is no stranger to Olympic ​ ​ qualifying events, having served as an Olympic qualifier for U.S. freeskiing and snowboarding in 2014 and 2017. This year’s Dew Tour will host open qualifiers, quarter final, semi final and final rounds of competition, offering fans the chance to see both favorite and new skaters from across the globe. Competitions will start on Thursday, June 13 and will conclude on Sunday, June 16. Visit DewTour.com for the complete ​ ​ competition schedule. The Park competition course is comprised of a concrete “pool” with a combination of ramps and course bends. For the Street competition, a street-like course will be designed featuring stairs, curbs, slopes and rails. In addition to Olympic qualifying events, the Dew Tour-specific Boost Mobile Switch Jam will be held over the weekend. Skaters have 30 minutes to hit as many switch tricks as possible on the Boost light ​ switch ledge and the nine-stair Boost rails, all while earning cash for the best tricks. At the end of it all, judges will award one skater for the best single switch trick landed. Transworld Skateboarding's "Battle ​ of the Shops" Presented by Bones Love Milk will feature five of Southern California's most revered skate shops battling it out in a jam format. -more- The weekend event also includes the Dew Tour Experience, a vibrant interactive sponsor village and ​ Dew Tour on the Green, a festival of outdoor music, local food and drink vendors and lifestyle activations, including a public skatepark and a learn to skate area. Here’s who to watch at Dew Tour: Women’s Park Poppy Starr Olsen (AUS), 18 -- In her short career, Olsen has a stacked resume including world champion ​ in 2014 and 2015 and is the first Australian female to compete in the X Games. So far this year, she took first in the Vans Park Oceania Regionals and King of Concrete Prahan competitions. Olsen is looking to better her 2018 fourth place finish at Dew Tour. Lizzie Armanto (FIN), 26 -- Armanto is a dual citizen having been raised in Santa Monica, Calif. and will ​ ​ ​ be skating for Finland in her run for the 2020 Games. She is a seasoned, strong park skater who already has two first place wins for 2019: the Vans Combi Pro Bowl and the Malmo Vert Attack. Nicole Hause (USA), 21 -- The 2018 Dew Tour women’s Park champion returns this year to defend her ​ title and earn points as a Team USA member. Hause is known for her big air speed, and her powerful style in the park. Men’s Park Pedro Barros (BRA), 24 -- Pedro Barros is the winningest skater in competitive park/bowl history, ​ dominating most every contest he enters. He is on the Brazil national skateboard team and is the 2018 Vans Park Series world champion. Tristan Rennie (USA), 20 -- The Team USA member took third in last year’s Dew Tour park competition. ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ His 2019 season has started strong, with a second place finish at the 15th annual Vans Combi Pool Party. Women’s Street Mariah Duran (USA), 22 -- The newest member of the Mountain Dew Team is known for pushing ​ ​ ​ boundaries; in 2018 she won the Dew Tour Long Beach Zumiez Destroyer Award for best trick and later that year, she nabbed two X Games Gold medals in Minneapolis and Sydney. Aori Nishimura (JPN), 17 -- Nishimura was recovering from knee surgery in 2018, and launched into ​ ​ ​ 2019 with full power. She is a multi-X Games medalist and took the podium at the Street League World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil earlier this year. Pamela Rosa (BRA), 19 -- Rosa will come into this year’s Olympic qualifier as last year’s Dew Tour ​ champion and a strong member of the Brazil national skateboard team. She took first place at the Street League stop in London this past weekend. -more- Men’s Street Jagger Eaton (USA), 18 -- Hailing from Mesa, Ariz., Eaton is on an upward momentum in his career, ​ ​ ​ having placed in the top five of nearly every competition he’s competed in over the past year, including second at the 2018 Dew Tour. Competing in both park and street has allowed Eaton to become one of the most progressive and versatile skateboarders in the sport that also earned him a spot on Team USA. Ryan Sheckler (USA), 29 -- One of the sport’s biggest names, Sheckler hasn’t rested on those laurels one ​ bit. He has his sights set on Tokyo. His Sheckler Foundation was created to support great causes that ​ directly benefit and enrich the lives of children and injured action sports athletes, inspiring them to “Be the Change!” Yuto Horigome (JPN), 20 -- The 2018 Dew Tour street champion has been earning top spots in the past ​ year, including two Street League Series events, most recently in Huntington Beach. His style and strength on the street course is one to watch this summer and as the road to Tokyo (his hometown) unfolds. Kelvin Hoefler (BRA), 25 -- Hoefler won his first skateboard contest in Brazil when he was nine. Now 16 ​ ​ years later, he is on the Brazil national skateboard team, and is one of the fiercest street skaters in the world. He joins Dew Tour as a 2018 Dew Tour and X Games third place finisher. A total of six hours of Dew Tour coverage will air on NBC and NBCSN.     June 12, 2020 PRESIDENT’S LETTER Downtime Quarantining at home, we’re all facing a bit more downtime than usual. I started to learn the ukulele and it’s going great, assuming all you want to hear is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” I’ve also practiced Morse code for the first time since my Boy Scout days. Still having trouble with numbers and punctuation, but I’ve got the 26 letters of the alphabet nailed. Sadly, Morse code doesn’t come up too often in conversation. Putting aside music and ham radio, this is a good opportunity to hone your own professional skills and undertake long-overdue office projects. Get caught up on that pile of New Yorker magazines, some of the best writing in the country. Take out your digital SLR camera and learn the difference between aperture and shutter priority. Create space on your computer by backing up and deleting old files. Learn a few more Photoshop skills such as cropping, brightness/contrast and image size. Get acquainted with new outdoor apps like National Geographic’s iNaturalist or The Cornell Lab’s Merlin. Start a website or blog showcasing your work. Increase your proficiency in video editing. Create a target list of editors to pitch. View a professional development seminar, such as the recent webinar hosted by New York-based freelance journalist Meena Thiruvengadam linked below. The world is slowly opening up and I fully expect we’ll all come roaring back in the fall. Having a few more skills in your professional quiver will keep your career on track.

Brooklyn, NY/Aug 16, 2013—From Friday, September 6 through Thursday, September 12, BAMcinématek presents Skateboarding is Not a Crime, a 24-film tribute to the best of skateboarding in cinema, from the 1960s to the present. The ultimate in counterculture coolness, skateboarding has made an irresistibly sexy subject for movies thanks to its rebel-athlete superstars, SoCal slacker fashion, and jaw-dropping jumps, ollies, tricks, and stunts. Opening the series on Friday, September 6 is George Gage’s Skateboard (1978), following a lumpish loser who comes up with an ill-advised scheme to manage an all-teen skateboarding team in order to settle his debts with his bookie. An awesomely retro ride through 70s skateboarding culture, Skateboard was written and produced by Miami Vice producer Dick Wolf and stars teen idol Leif Garrett (Alfred Hitchcock’s daughter plays his mom!) and Z-Boys great Tony Alva. Gage will appear in person for a Q&A following the screening. Two of the earliest films in the series showcase the upright technique that dominated in the 60s. Skaterdater (1965—Sep 23), Noel Black’s freewheelingly shot, dialogue-free puppy-love story (made with pre-adolescent members of Torrance, California’s Imperial Skateboard Club) is widely considered to be the first skateboard movie. Claude Jutra’s cinéma vérité lark The Devil’s Toy (1966—Sep 23), is narrated in faux-alarmist fashion, with kids whipping down the hills of Montreal, only to have their decks confiscated by the cops.

    Youth Perceptions of the Olympic Games: Attitudes Towards Action Sports at the YOG and Olympic Games Associate Professors Belinda Wheaton and Holly Thorpe University of Waikato, New Zealand Final report for The IOC Olympic Studies Centre Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme 2015/2016 Award June 2016 ABSTRACT The IOC faces a significant challenge, that is, how to stay relevant to contemporary youth amid changing sport participation and consumption patterns and growing competition from mega-events such as the X Games. This project critically examined youth perceptions of the relevance and significance of the Olympic Games, and the Youth Olympic Games. It focused particularly on the attitudes of participants in newer, action sports (i.e., skateboarding, surfing, BMX, snowboarding, parkour, kite-surfing), as well as the cultural processes leading up to and following the short-listing of surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Online surveys, media analysis and interviews provide rich and nuanced insights into the experiences, attitudes, opinions, debates and politics that influence youths’ current and future participation in, and consumption of, the Olympic Games. Ultimately, this project reveals generational differences in attitudes towards action sports inclusion in the Olympic Games, as well as changing perceptions among those working most closely with the IOC to prepare their sports for possible Olympic inclusion. Furthermore, this report highlights the power and potential of action sports inclusion into the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, as well as some of the ongoing and new challenges for such significant changes to both the infrastructure of action sports cultures and industries, and to the transforming landscape of Olympic sport.
