The variety and number of organisations engaged in this work is remarkable, and the number con- tinues to grow. Twenty years marks a point in the history of the Brighton Declaration, where we can and must review the implementation of this document. The ‘From Brighton to Helsinki’ IWG Progress Report provides examples of initiatives that have been undertaken by Brighton Declaration signatories and Catalyst-subscribers to empower women. In spite of these efforts, the latest data shows that in some areas progress has been limited. Henderson © 2010 Brian Conlin ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT BRIAN CONLIN: Who’s on the Playing Field?: A Journalistic Series about Homosexuality in Sports (Under the direction of Jan Yopp, Dr. Richard Cole and Dr. Karla Henderson) The number of openly gay and lesbian athletes has boomed since the 1980s. The Gay Games is one example of this. The first Gay Games in 1982 had 1,300 participants. By 1994, the Gay Games drew 11,000 participants. In three articles, this master’s thesis examines various aspects of gays and lesbians in sports. The first article covers the Gay Games. It includes information about its supporters and protestors, a brief history and a look ahead to the upcoming Gay Games and beyond. The second article profiles a rugby player on the Carolina Kodiaks, one of two gay rugby teams in North Carolina. The third article examines how journalists, especially those in sports departments, cover LGBT issues. The thesis aims to explore the issues of the gay and lesbian community as they pursue sports and to show that LGBT issues in sport will become more important as society becomes more tolerant.

    NEWS RELEASE ­ SOUTHWEST REGIONAL QUIDDITCH CHAMPIONSHIP FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Sarah Woolsey, Events Director ­ [email protected] ​ Quidditch Championship Coming to San Marcos, Texas Feb. 20­21 The best of the Southwest region compete in a gender integrated full­contact sport Photo by Michael E. Mason SAN MARCOS, Texas ­ In February, the best quidditch teams from the Southwest will gather at West Campus Fields at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas to determine the regional champion. 20 teams and over 400 players from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas will be in attendance Feb. 20­21, 2016 for the Southwest Regional Quidditch Championship. The top nine teams will qualify for the US Quidditch Cup 9, to be held in Columbia, South Carolina this spring. This event is free and open to the public. Real­life quidditch has swept the nation as a fast paced, gender integrated, full­contact adaptation of the sport from the Harry Potter books, with more than 170 official teams, 4,000 ​ ​ players, nine annual championship events, and hundreds of thousands of fans. Quidditch is played with seven players to a team, all mounted on brooms. They score points with the quaffle (a volleyball) and the snitch, a neutral yellow­clad athlete who tries to avoid capture, similar to flag football. US Quidditch’s official rulebook is available free for download here. ​ ​ About U.S. Quidditch US Quidditch (USQ), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the national governing body for the sport of quidditch, organizes the Southwest Regional Quidditch Championship. Education & Resources 22 Initiatives 25 At the beginning of the 2016- Our People 27 2017 season, I was delighted Supporters 29 to promote Mary Kimball Financials 31 to Events Director, and the middle of the season saw a new face join our ranks with the addition of Jillian Flom as Events Manager. Along with our Membership Director, Eric Schnier, and our volunteer staff, our team worked hard this past season to execute on a variety of tournaments and other initiatives. One such project, and our marquee event of the 2016-2017 season, was US Quidditch Cup 10 in Kissimmee, Florida, which marked a decade of national championships and saw Texas Cavalry take the crown as our sport’s top team. This came after a year of hard-fought regional championships in eight regions across the country. Overall, we saw 131 teams participate in regional and national championships this past season, which brought an economic impact of over $1 million to the nine cities that hosted them.
