DOWNLOAD PHOTOS AND VIDEO FOR EDITORIAL USE (Lausanne, Switzerland and Carlsbad, Calif. ) April 18, 2019 -- World Skate, Mountain Dew® and ASN: The ​ ​ Adventure Sports Network Group today announced their collaboration throughout 2019 and 2020: The ​ annual summer Dew Tour skateboard competition and festival to be held June 13-16 in Long Beach, Calif. ​ ​ will serve as the first official global Olympic qualifying event in the U.S. for men’s and women’s skateboarding park and street competitions in 2019 and the final qualifying event in 2020. Skateboarding will be part of the Olympic Games for the first time in Tokyo in 2020, and has also been proposed as an additional sport in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. More than 300 of the world’s top male and female skateboarders will compete in individual Park and Street events for a chance to win the Dew Tour title, while earning valuable points toward their country’s Olympic skateboarding team. As in the past, Dew Tour competitors exemplify the best in each sport. Expected to compete at this year’s event include USA Skateboarding national team members such as Nyjah Huston, Jagger Eaton, Tristan Rennie, Mariah Duran, Lacey Baker, Jordyn Barratt, as well as international skaters ​ ​ Oskar Rozenberg (SWE), Kelvin Hoefler (BRA), Pamela Rosa (BRA), Yuto Horigome (JPN), Leticia Bufoni (BRA) and Ryan Decenzo (CAN). “This year is arguably the most exciting and interesting year in skateboarding and Olympic history,” said MTN DEW skater and USA Skateboarding national team member Mariah Duran. “From making the first-ever USA Skateboarding national team to joining the Mountain Dew team as the first female skater, it continues to be a groundbreaking year. I can’t wait to skate and see how it all unfolds at the first-ever global Olympic qualifier at Dew Tour in Long Beach.” The Olympic qualification system will be based on World Skateboarding Rankings maintained by World Skate, the sport’s International Governing Body. Skateboarders will earn points by competing in World Skate sanctioned events during the Olympic qualifying period beginning January 1, 2019 and ending May 31, 2020. Dew Tour, as part of the World Skate sanctioned Five-Star Street and Park skateboarding series, ​ will serve as the first qualifying event in the U.S. in 2019 and the last qualifying event in the U.S. in 2020. Dew Tour is no stranger to Olympic qualifying events, having served as an Olympic qualifier for U.S. freeskiing and snowboarding in 2014 and 2018. The theoretical part of this work deals with psychological aspects of extreme sports experience, motivation and personality of extreme athlete. The complete description of skateboarding from both sport´s and sub-culture´s point of view is given in the next part. In the practical part of the work, interview analysis of five skateboarders is conducted with help of IPA methodology – interpretative phenomenological analysis. The results of joint analysis include seven main themes, which are common for all respondents: friendship, motivation, taking mind off and positive influence of skateboarding, feelings of freedom, injuries, mental work and coping with fear, rules.

This week I received an e-mail from one of the Scouts in my troop with a list of You“ know you’re a Scout when”. (The best of which can be found on page 28.) It reminded me of how even when we are far from home the Scouting family is close. One clear example of this from my life happened to me while out with friends in college. I had gathered friends from school, work and Scouting to go out for dinner. In the course of the evening the topic of conversation turned to memories of Scouting. Then one of my friends from summer camp staff said: “Well you know the true sign of a Scout is if you have your buddy tag in your wallet”. With that, to the amazement of the rest of my friends, all of my Scouting friends (including myself) pulled out of our wallets a small round weathered disc half red half blue that had once served as their swimming buddy tag. Though we may travel far, family is always there.     June 12, 2020 PRESIDENT’S LETTER Downtime Quarantining at home, we’re all facing a bit more downtime than usual. I started to learn the ukulele and it’s going great, assuming all you want to hear is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” I’ve also practiced Morse code for the first time since my Boy Scout days. Still having trouble with numbers and punctuation, but I’ve got the 26 letters of the alphabet nailed. Sadly, Morse code doesn’t come up too often in conversation. Putting aside music and ham radio, this is a good opportunity to hone your own professional skills and undertake long-overdue office projects. Get caught up on that pile of New Yorker magazines, some of the best writing in the country. Take out your digital SLR camera and learn the difference between aperture and shutter priority. Create space on your computer by backing up and deleting old files. Learn a few more Photoshop skills such as cropping, brightness/contrast and image size. Get acquainted with new outdoor apps like National Geographic’s iNaturalist or The Cornell Lab’s Merlin. Start a website or blog showcasing your work. Increase your proficiency in video editing. Create a target list of editors to pitch. View a professional development seminar, such as the recent webinar hosted by New York-based freelance journalist Meena Thiruvengadam linked below. The world is slowly opening up and I fully expect we’ll all come roaring back in the fall. Having a few more skills in your professional quiver will keep your career on track.

    Skateboarding enters the 2021 Olympic Games As an athletic and artistic endeavor, skateboarding is about to make its debut in the 2021 Olympics. Sky Brown, just turned 13 years old, representing Great Britain There have been world competitions and international skater rankings since 2010. Skateboarding entering the Olympics this year is a big deal. 1. Why might skateboarding not have been included in the Olympics until now? 2. What other sport (with similar moves) are skateboarders often good at? 3. Do you skateboard? (If you do, please help your class with any details that need clarifying in these discussions.) At the Olympics we will see two styles of skateboarding: Street Skateboarding - July 25 and 26, 2021 Athletes complete two runs and five tricks. A trick is executed like a run but only involves a single trick Five judges will evaluate the runs and tricks on a 0 to10-point scale for each run or trick. The highest and lowest scores for each run or trick are dropped, and the remaining three scores are averaged to give a score for each run and trick.     Youth Perceptions of the Olympic Games: Attitudes Towards Action Sports at the YOG and Olympic Games Associate Professors Belinda Wheaton and Holly Thorpe University of Waikato, New Zealand Final report for The IOC Olympic Studies Centre Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme 2015/2016 Award June 2016 ABSTRACT The IOC faces a significant challenge, that is, how to stay relevant to contemporary youth amid changing sport participation and consumption patterns and growing competition from mega-events such as the X Games. This project critically examined youth perceptions of the relevance and significance of the Olympic Games, and the Youth Olympic Games. It focused particularly on the attitudes of participants in newer, action sports (i.e., skateboarding, surfing, BMX, snowboarding, parkour, kite-surfing), as well as the cultural processes leading up to and following the short-listing of surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Online surveys, media analysis and interviews provide rich and nuanced insights into the experiences, attitudes, opinions, debates and politics that influence youths’ current and future participation in, and consumption of, the Olympic Games. Ultimately, this project reveals generational differences in attitudes towards action sports inclusion in the Olympic Games, as well as changing perceptions among those working most closely with the IOC to prepare their sports for possible Olympic inclusion. Furthermore, this report highlights the power and potential of action sports inclusion into the Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, as well as some of the ongoing and new challenges for such significant changes to both the infrastructure of action sports cultures and industries, and to the transforming landscape of Olympic sport.

    X GAMES MINNEAPOLIS 2017 TELEVISION TALENT BIOS Hosts: Jack Mitrani (@JackMitrani) Jack Mitrani is a professional snowboarder, entrepreneur, filmmaker, music festival producer and aspiring musician. He returns to host X Games Minneapolis. Early in his career he got his start by producing gut-busting comedic skits, and has since refined professional action sports footage that broadcast greats such as ESPN, HBO and NBC have chased down through the years. In 2008, Mitrani and friends Danny Davis, Dave Driscoll and Keir Dillon started the Frends Crew, all centering around the concept that “there’s no I in frends.” Initially, the crew consisted of seven pro-snowboarders who traveled the world, making funny videos and skits, while winning major snowboarding contests, and promoting that collaboration was more fun than doing it solo. Born and raised in Long Island, Mitrani’s family moved to Vermont after he and brother/pro snowboarder Luke convinced their parents to allow them to attend Stratton Mountain School, where snowboarding was a part of the curriculum. Commentators/Analysts Brandon Graham - Skateboard (@Brando_Graham) Brandon Graham returns to the X Games telecast team as play-by-play commentator for all Skateboard events. The Bay Area native has been a part of the X Games team since 2013, handling skateboard play-by-play for the summer events as well as broadcast duties for the World of X Games series on ABC. Graham previously served as the play-by-play voice of Rob Dyrdek's Street League Skateboarding. He currently resides in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Nadia.
