Gateway for SharePoint 1.0 is a new product release that extends Microsoft’s Information Rights Management (IRM) by adding support for additional file formats and enhancing the ability to securely collaborate outside of SharePoint. Liquid Machines Gateway for SharePoint, working together with the Liquid Machines Document Control Client (LMDC Client) or the Liquid Machines Viewer (LM Viewer) extends Microsoft’s Information Rights Management (IRM) by adding support for additional file formats and enhancing the ability to securely collaborate outside of SharePoint. Like the IRM protectors built into SharePoint 2007, the Gateway for SharePoint associates Rights Management Service (RMS) permissions to files when they are checked out of a library or list and removes the protection when the file is uploaded to SharePoint. © 2008 Liquid Machines, Inc. Confidential and Proprietary Page 1 of 5 Additionally, the Gateway for SharePoint (and the LMDC Client or LM Viewer) enables the following additional features: The Gateway for SharePoint provides an autonomous protector which allows SharePoint to protect additional file types. Users with LMDC Client or LM Viewer can work with these additional file types. The Liquid Machines protector creates an issuance license which includes all authorized users, allowing all authorized users to share protected information outside of SharePoint, without requiring that each user download the files directly from SharePoint. All installation and uninstallation information is provided in the Liquid Machines Gateway for SharePoint Installation Guide. IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTE: The Gateway’s installer modifies the SharePoint farm configuration using SharePoint’s “stsadm.exe” configuration tool. In order for the installation to complete successfully, the user account running the installer must have rights to modify SharePoint’s Administrative Content Database. The account must have membership in the database’s “securityadmin” and “dbcreators” roles, or have full control of the database. Known Issues This section describes known issues found in Gateway for SharePoint 1.0.x releases Gateway for SharePoint 1.0 LMDC Client 7.0.6 Gateway for SharePoint 1.0 The following are known issues in Gateway for SharePoint 1.0. Bug Number Description and Workaround (if applicable) 11820 Description: Running installer “repair” causes installer wizard to fail. Workaround: Uninstall, then reinstall the product. 11968 Description: “Externally protected” .MHTML/.MHT files cannot be uploaded to SharePoint lists that have IRM enabled. Workaround: SharePoint checks the integrity (or validity) of certain file types, and a protected .MHTML/.MHT document is not recognized as valid. Users will not be permitted to upload an .MHTML/.MHT file that they protect outside of SharePoint or in another list. .MHTML/.MHT files that are unprotected when uploaded, and protected by the LM GW 4 SP can be re-uploaded to the same SP library without issue. 12029 Description: Installation of Gateway for SharePoint fails on Windows Server 2008 if User Account Control is enabled. Workaround: Disable UAC during installation, then restart post-install. Please refer to the Gateway for SharePoint Installation Guide for complete instructions. LMDC Client 7.0.6 The following are known related issues in Liquid Machine Document Control Client 7.0.6 which the user may encounter when working with SharePoint. Bug Number Description and Workaround (if applicable) 12071 Description: “Save As” to SharePoint may fail with “Invalid address” error Workaround: Save the document locally and upload it to the Sharepoint site. © 2008 Liquid Machines, Inc. Confidential and Proprietary Page 4 of 5 Bug Number Description and Workaround (if applicable) 11927 Description: Opening .xlsx files from SharePoint in Excel 2003 with the Office Compatibility Pack causes a crash. Workaround: Save the file locally, then open the file. 11908 Description: Opening a Word document for editing from SharePoint may fail with an erroneous error message indicating that the file is already locked for editing. Workaround: Contact the user who has the file locked and have them close their browser. Alternately, open the file read-only, make and save edits locally, then upload the file (after the lock is released). 11487 Description: Saving .MHTML/.MHT files in Excel 2003 directly to SharePoint may fail. Workaround: If the file is unprotected, save it locally, then upload to Sharepoint. Additional Information Gateway for SharePoint 1.0 Gateway for SharePoint 1.0 In general, SharePoint is very tightly integrated with Microsoft Office files (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint); however integration may not be seamless with other types of files (for example PDF and Visio files). For best results when using SharePoint and Gateway for SharePoint with non-Office files, Liquid Machines recommends that you follow these practices: • There are multiple ways to open (or download) files from SharePoint. If you just want to view published files and make no changes (often the case with PDF files), the files in the SharePoint libraries or lists can be opened in any way. • If you intend to edit files from SharePoint, it is recommended that you always download the file to your computer, edit and save the files on your computer as needed, and then upload the files back to SharePoint. This method results in the most consistent behavior from SharePoint. © 2008 Liquid Machines, Inc. Confidential and Proprietary Page 5 of 5 .

Microsoft Office MICROSOFT OFFICE INTRODUCTION Microsoft Office is an office suite of desktop applications, servers and services for the Microsoft Windows and OS X operating systems. It was first announced by Bill Gates of Microsoft on August 1, 1988 at COMDEX in Las Vegas. Initially a marketing term for a bundled set of applications, the first version of Office contained Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. Over the years, Office applications have grown substantially closer with shared features such as a common spell checker, OLEdata integration and Visual Basic for Applications scripting language. Microsoft also positions Office as a development platform for line-of-business software under the Office Business Applications brand. On 10 July 2012, Softpedia reported that Office is used by over a billion people worldwide. The current versions are Office 2013 for Windows, released on October 11, 2012; and Office 2011 for OS X, released October 26, 2010 On 24 October 2012, the RTM final code of Office 2013 Professional Plus was released to TechNet and MSDN subscribers for download. On 15 November 2012, the 60-day trial version of Office 2013 Professional Plus was released for download. All devices running Windows Phone and Windows RT come pre-installed with Office Mobile and Office RT, respectively. Office Mobile is also available for Android phones and the iPhone. A version of Office for the iPad was launched in March 2014. A web-based version of Office called Office Online, is also available COMPONENTS Word Microsoft Word is a word processor and was previously considered the main program in Office.

  • Taking Control of Your Documents
Taking Control of Your Documents How to free yourself from Microsoft Office dependency in three easy steps The Objective When you save a document in your word processor, your work is encoded in a particular file format. You often have a choice of formats that you can use, with names like DOC, DOCX, RTF, WPD or ODT. Your choice of format will influence whether others can easily read your document today, whether you yourself will be able to read your document ten years from now, and whether you will be able to migrate painlessly to another word processor or operating system if and when you choose to do so. Although many users simply click “Save” and give no thought to which format is being used under the covers, this unthinking use of the word processor's default settings is a recipe for vendor lock-in. In fact, several vendors intentionally set their default format to be ones which will only work well with their own software, fostering dependency on that vendor's software and lessening the user's ability to take advantage of other options in the market. The more documents you save and accumulate in a vendor's proprietary format, the harder it will be for you to consider any other choices. The objective of this paper is to show you, the user, how to extricate yourself from this cycle of dependency and take control of your documents. Specifically, we show how you can, in three easy steps, free yourself from a Microsoft Office dependency. In the end you may, of course, choose to remain on Microsoft Office.
