Entre ombre et lumière : les voix féminines dans les Métamorphoses Hélène Vial Fondée sur l’articulation entre les passions des âmes et les métamorphoses des corps, l’esthétique des Métamorphoses d’Ovide délivre à la fois une vision audacieuse du monde et une conception neuve de l’entreprise poétique, le texte ovidien étant investi d’une très forte dimension réflexive due notamment à la correspondance exacte entre son sujet, la métamorphose, et sa forme, une écriture de la variation1. Or, la densité métalittéraire du poème est particulièrement grande dans les passages où se trouvent associés deux motifs qui constituent le sujet même du présent volume : celui de la voix et celui de la féminité. D’une part, la question de la voix est centrale dans les Métamorphoses ; d’autre part, les mythes féminins y sont très nombreux et d’une grande richesse symbolique ; et quand le poète relie l’une aux autres, la voix féminine apparaît dotée d’une capacité particulièrement saillante « à être inductric[e] de poésie », comme le disait l’appel à communication du séminaire qui a donné naissance à ce livre2, autrement dit à faire signe vers l’écriture et à parler du projet poétique dans son entier. C’est cette capacité qui constitue l’objet de mon analyse : dans la foule des silhouettes mythiques qui traversent les Métamorphoses et dont la voix nous est donnée à entendre, y a-t- il une spécificité féminine ? Et plus précisément, que nous disent sur la conception ovidienne de la poésie les paroles prononcées par ces figures féminines de l’ombre et du mystère3 -

Putting Frisian Names on the Map

It has official status throughout the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In addition, there are several other recognized languages. Papiamentu (or Papiamento) and English are formally used in the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom, while Low-Saxon and Limburgish are recognized as non-standardized regional languages, and Yiddish and Sinte Romani as non-territorial minority languages in the European part of the Kingdom. The Dutch Sign Language is formally recognized as well. The largest minority language is (West) Frisian or Frysk, an official language in the province of Friesland (Fryslân). Frisian is a West Germanic language closely related to the Saterland Frisian and North Frisian languages spoken in Germany. The Frisian languages as a group are closer related to English than to Dutch or German. Frisian is spoken as a mother tongue by about 55% of the population in the province of Friesland, which translates to some 350,000 native speakers. In many rural areas a large majority speaks Frisian, while most cities have a Dutch-speaking majority. A standardized Frisian orthography was established in 1879 and reformed in 1945, 1980 and 2015. -

Signed: Name: Anton Poot Date: 2013 For my wife Jesmond 2 ABSTRACT The aim of this thesis is to analyse Anglo-Dutch relations in this highly volatile period, as perceived and interpreted by both sides, and it also closes the gap between the notable theses of Grayson1 and Groenveld2. On 23 August 1625 Charles I and the Dutch Republic concluded a partnership agreement for joint warfare at sea and a month later a treaty for war against Spain. In December 1625 England, Denmark and the Republic signed treaties to establish the nucleus of an alliance against the Austrian Habsburgs. Charles wanted an active role in continental politics. Also to compel Spain to support his aim to restore his exiled sister Elizabeth and husband Count Elector Frederick V to their Palatinate estates and Frederick to his Electoral dignities in the Empire. The Dutch wanted England as an active partner in their war with Spain. It was a partnership of convenience, with different objectives but with the intention that success would serve the interests of both. -

By applying a stereoscopic reading of the novel, which may achieve depth by means of comparing different textual objects and a wider historical context (that of the history of firearms in the 17th and 18th century, plus other works by Pynchon featuring firearms), it will be shown how literary (textual) avatars of "real", "historical" objects (firearms) may at the same time be verbal constructs but refer to the technical, material features of those objects, establishing multi-dimensional and complex relations between technology, science, economics (early forms of globalization), politics (colonialism and colonial wars) within and outside Mason & Dixon, and the rest of Pynchon's oeuvre. Robert Boyle, 1670 matter out of place Consider the following object as shown in an early eighteenth-century engraving (Figure 1). It is a piece of wood — not a highly worked thing, not ingeniously wrought, though it is an artefact of human labour rather than a natural body. Or is it? In the engraving, the piece of wood disappears: it is visible towards the bottom of the image, a sober pointed stump, but it is quickly subsumed by a second, enveloping entity that swirls about it in an embroidering corkscrew. What elements are here intertwin- ing? The legend beneath the engraving identifies the artefact thus: “Navis, prope Hispaniolam ann Dom 1659. Naufragium passae, asser, a clavo ferreo transfixus, corallio aspero candicante I. B. Obsitus, & a fundo maris anno 1687 expiscatus.” It describes a stake or spar from a ship wrecked off Hispaniola in 1659, which is transfixed by both an iron bolt and rough whitish coral, fished out of the depths in 1687. This collector’s item is neither the cliché of exemplarily beautiful coral nor straightforwardly a historical relic, but an intertwining of the two: the “transfixing” of a remnant of maritime technology by an aquatic agent. It exhibits the very proc- ess of encrustation. The spar is juxtaposed with the image of a jellyfish, and more proximately, engravings of Spanish silver coins, also encrusted with coral: “Nummus argenteus Hispanicus … incrustatus”, one of the labels reads.1 Still another illustra- tion, in a separate engraving, bears the legend “Frustum ligni e mari atlantico erutum cui adhaerescunt conchae anatiferae margine muricata” — a piece of “drift wood beset with bernecle [sic] shells”. -

CASCADE bulletin voor tuinhistorie Jaargang 2012 (21) nummer 2 Hollandse tuinkunst in Rusland Carla en Juliet Oldenburger Inleiding Tsaar Peter de Grote (1672-1725) heeft tussen 1697 en 1717 twee bezoeken gebracht aan West Europa. Waarschijnlijk deed hij dit op initiatief van zijn zeer gewaardeerde Zwitserse vriend Franz Lefort (1655-1699), die ooit in dienst was op een Hollands oorlogsschip en in Rusland tot admiraal was benoemd. Tijdens die reizen bezocht Peter de Grote vorstenhuizen en landhuizen van invloedrijke personen. In Nederland was hij erg onder de indruk van architectuur en tuinarchitectuur en hij wenste dan ook zijn kennis op dit gebied te vergroten om daarmee in Rusland zijn voordeel te doen, zowel bij de opbouw van de stad St. Petersburg als bij de bouw en aanleg van particuliere huizen en bijbehorende tuinen. De invloed van de Hollandse tuinkunst op de Russische is dan ook duidelijk aantoonbaar. In dit artikel worden de kenmerken van ‘Hollandse’ tuinen uit de tijd van Peter de Grote nader belicht. Hoe definiëren Russische collega’s de Hollandse tuinkunst uit het begin van de achttiende eeuw en wat zijn onze (Nederlandse) hedendaagse ideeën daarover? In verband met restauratie-plannen is het uiterst belangrijk standpunten van beide zijden te kennen. Of de opvattingen van Russische en Nederlandse tuinhistorici met elkaar overeenkomen zal in de conclusie worden uitgewerkt.
