How I got involved into scale modeling and made it into a lifetime of happiness in this hobby. As I reflect on how to help others who have thought about modeling, but haven’t tried it for some reason, I thought my story might be a good one to share. So, without further ado, I would like to honor a few folks that inspired me in this hobby. My Mother: Most mothers spend their lives trying to help their kids find the path to happiness. Mine was no different in this pursuit. It is funny how life evolves. How small gestures along the way can have major effects on someone for the rest of his or her existence. I never would have thought that I would end up in Dallas, Texas. Especially coming from an entire different continent. To us, Texas was ‘cowboy movie country’. But the unimaginable happened and I’m here. All because my mother bought me a plastic model kit when I was seven - over 50 years ago. The seeds she planted with that first kit have yielded great fruit! Shep Paine: Modeling started to become very serious in the mid-seventies when I left the Army after a two-year stint (drafted). I always had an eye for detail and knew exactly what I wanted and how it should look before I even commenced a project. I can’t recall the number of times I examined Shep Paine’s dioramas or studied his techniques. For the longest time and still today, Shep Paine is my idol! François Verlinden: I have always been able to convert what I see into and have a pretty good sense early on how to accomplish results that would have people question themselves of “how in hell did he do that?” At least I thought I had. It all changed when one evening I was strolling the streets of my home town and passed a brand-new hobby shop. As a matter of fact, it opened two hours before and there was a small reception going on with coffee and cookies. I wandered in and that instant right there, changed my life forever. There were models and dioramas on display and their innovation exceeded anything and everything I ever laid eyes on in the model industry. I was stunned! That moment I knew this was something I wanted! I wanted to possess that level of skill so badly that it made me nauseous. I looked around and saw the patron of the shop talking to a customer. I waited and waited until for a brief moment he got a break and I moved into place. I gave him all the compliments, praises and salutations my vocabulary could master until I realized that I was making a fool of myself. I almost beat that man to death with kindness! That man was François Verlinden. An instant friendship was inaugurated right there in that small shop in Lier, Belgium and for years, François showed me all the ropes and tricks of the trade. Bob Letterman: Since François was “connected” to all the greats of the model word, many of them became very close friends. And Bob Letterman is one of those guys. Bob Letterman hardly needs to be introduced and is an accomplished and very well-known modeler and author all around the world. Bob, to me, is still one of the most unrivaled masters in the hobby industry today. There you have it. These were the people that inspired me to keep getting better, becoming the modeler that I am today and even make a profes- sion out of it. I’m thankful to my Mother for buying me a model and not ballet shoes! I am forever indebted that I ventured into a circle that brought me in contact with the greatest of the great of the model industry, who never shied away in revealing a trick or two. I’m grateful that I have been lucky enough to turn a hobby into a career that has already lasted for over 35 years. That I had the luck of meeting these great individuals who, hopefully are an inspiration for a next generation to come. So now it’s your turn. Share your story on our Face- book page or on our Blog any time. Who knows what potential modeler may read it and finally take the plunge into the greatest hobby ever! Cheers!
