In addition to full participation in projects under the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative, we are also prepared to bring our inherent strengths into full play to drive concerted development in the Greater Bay Area. Last year the commencement of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High Speed Rail (Hong Kong Section) and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge have provided a new engine to drive Hong Kong’s economic growth. In the past year, the Group was active in seizing development opportunities and greatly encouraged to see its properties, construction materials, hospitality and entertainment & leisure businesses all achieving remarkable results. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our stakeholders and partners for their support, and credit must also go to our 30,000 strong staff for their hard work. In 2019, the Group will continue to work hand-in-hand with our business partners to scale new heights. GEG (stock code: 00027) achieved brilliant results, capped by substantial growth in revenue for the year. Its Cotai Phases 3 and 4 projects also made good progress. The Group will press on with its development plan in Hengqin, with the hope of creating brand new entertainment and leisure resort experiences for our customers from around the world, and help reinforce Macau’s positioning as the World Centre of Tourism and Leisure. In addition, GEG has also been keenly exploring opportunities in the overseas markets, and will work closely with Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer in Monaco and its business partners in Japan to realise its hope of developing a world-class integrated resort in Japan. 2 K. Wah Group Spring Cocktail Reception 2019 “A New Year of Success and Achievements” 5 March 2019 As for property business, KWIH (stock code: 00173) continued to report strong property sales. In Mainland China, UpTown, Phase IV of J Metropolis, in Guangzhou and Windermere in Zhujiajiao, Qingpu, Shanghai recorded good sales performance after debut last year. Sales of other properties were also satisfactory. In the meantime, the Group has successfully expanded its land bank through acquisitions of sites in the Yangtze River Delta region and the Pearl River Delta region, in a further extension of K. Wah’s business footprint. Its investment properties also continued to report growth, generating satisfactory rental income for the Group. In 2019, KWIH will actively launch more quality projects to consolidate the Group’s presence in Hong Kong, the Yangtze River Delta and the Greater Bay Area. As for hospitality business, the Group’s InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong recently completed its guestrooms’ renovation and was bestowed the title “World’s Leading Luxury Business Hotel”, the most prestigious at the “World Travel Awards” (“WTA”), for the third consecutive year. The company is committed to producing environmentally sustainable construction materials to achieve low carbon and energy saving goals, and is now one of the largest Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (“GGBS”) manufacturers in China. The company also won a number of widely-recognised environmental protection awards in Hong Kong and China last year. 3 K. Wah Group Spring Cocktail Reception 2019 “A New Year of Success and Achievements” 5 March 2019 Promoting Peace and Benevolence Building World Civilisation Upholding the principle of “giving back to society from which it has benefitted” while contributing to social and economic development, the Group is dedicated to giving back to the society and building an environment that supports sustainable development. Dr Lui Che-woo, Chairman of K. Wah Group, donated RMB200 million to Tsinghua University last year to fund the construction of two new blocks at the Tsinghua University Biomedical Sciences Building, named “Lui Che Woo Building”, which dedicated to support the research, innovation and sustainable development of the life science, medical and pharmaceutical disciplines. The LUI Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilisation, aiming at inspiring people to build a more harmonious and sustainable world is entering its fourth year. The Award in 2019 will not have specific areas of focus, as a move to broaden the scope of work covered in each prize category, so that more individuals and groups which have made significant contributions in different areas will have the chance to be recognised. Marrying Culture and Innovation Showcasing Traditional and Modern Elements The spring cocktail reception kicked off with a short video retracing the brilliant achievements of the Group and conveying its wish for brighter prospect, which was complemented by a drum performance. In addition to the special performance, the Group also showcased the honours and awards won by its four main businesses in the past year. The business segments also set up creative booths at the venue.

  • China's National Security Law for Hong Kong
China’s National Security Law for Hong Kong: Issues for Congress Updated August 3, 2020 Congressional Research Service https://crsreports.congress.gov R46473 SUMMARY R46473 China’s National Security Law for Hong Kong: August 3, 2020 Issues for Congress Susan V. Lawrence On June 30, 2020, China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC) passed a Specialist in Asian Affairs national security law (NSL) for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR). Hong Kong’s Chief Executive promulgated it in Hong Kong later the same day. The law is widely seen Michael F. Martin as undermining the HKSAR’s once-high degree of autonomy and eroding the rights promised to Specialist in Asian Affairs Hong Kong in the 1984 Joint Declaration on the Question of Hong Kong, an international treaty between the People’s Republic of China (China, or PRC) and the United Kingdom covering the 50 years from 1997 to 2047. The NSL criminalizes four broadly defined categories of offenses: secession, subversion, organization and perpetration of terrorist activities, and “collusion with a foreign country or with external elements to endanger national security” in relation to the HKSAR. Persons convicted of violating the NSL can be sentenced to up to life in prison. China’s central government can, at its or the HKSAR’s discretion, exercise jurisdiction over alleged violations of the law and prosecute and adjudicate the cases in mainland China. The law apparently applies to alleged violations committed by anyone, anywhere in the world, including in the United States. The HKSAR and PRC governments have already begun implementing the NSL, including setting up the new entities the law requires.

  • Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers
LCQ14: Language proficiency assessment for teachers Following is a question by the Hon Mrs Regina Ip and a written reply by the Secretary for Education, Mr Kevin Yeung, in the Legislative Council today (July 7): Question: Since 2001, the authorities have held the Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers once every year to assess if teachers and aspiring teachers have achieved the language proficiency needed for teaching the English Language subject or the Putonghua subject in schools. Candidates who have obtained Level 3 or above in all papers of the assessment are regarded as meeting the language proficiency requirement (LPR) for teaching the relevant subject in schools. In this connection, will the Government inform this Council: (1) in respect of the serving teachers who participated respectively in the (i) English Language and (ii) Putonghua assessments of this year, of (a) their number, (b) the percentage of that number in the total number of candidates, and (c) the percentage of them meeting LPR; (2) given that as far as the English Language assessment is concerned, (i) on average 44.6 per cent of candidates obtained Level 3 or above in the paper on Writing from 2017 to 2021, and such a percentage was far lower than the relevant percentage for the other three papers (i.e. Reading, Listening and Speaking), and (ii) 73.1 per cent of this year’s candidates obtained Level 3 or above in the paper on Reading, and such a percentage was a significant drop from the relevant average percentage of the previous four years (i.e. 85.7 per cent), whether it has assessed the causes for such performance of the candidates; (3) whether the Education Bureau will encourage more serving teachers who are teaching other subjects to take part in such assessments; and (4) of the new measures in place to enhance teachers' proficiency in English Language and Putonghua? Reply: President, We endeavour to nurture students to be biliterate and trilingual.
