No portion of this publication may be reproduced without the permission of Legion Paper. OUR ROMANCE WITH PAPER Peace treaties are signed on it. Declarations of love are written on it. Artists’ works are portrayed on it. Of course, we mean paper; the medium that has evolved to reflect its own poetry, becoming an opportunity for pure innovation and unlimited creativity. Through the years, a melding of ancient craft and enlightened technology occurred, creating new practices and opening new horizons for expression in paper. When we trace its history, we find insight into man’s relentless imagination and creativity. Today, this convergence of ancient and modern continues and paper emerges with not only greater variety but a renewed appreciation of quality. To some, fine paper is the space that translates what is conceived in the mind to what is authentic. To others, having access to the right paper represents abundant possibility and profitability. The very selection of paper now becomes an adventure, realizing how the end result will vary based upon choice. Today, as in the years past, Legion Paper continues to source the finest papermakers around the globe, respecting the skill of the artisan and the unique attributes of the finished product. As we head into the future, Legion remains steadfast in its commitment to diversity, customer service and an unparalleled level of professionalism. We’re sure you will want to touch and feel some of the 3,500 papers described on the following pages. We encourage you to utilize our exceptional sample library with requests by phone or through [email protected], and look forward to sharing new possibilities, new directions and continued creative solutions. 1 Table of Contents Information, Terms & Conditions . 4 Folio . 24 Ogura . 32 Frankfurt . 24 Okawara . 32 Okawara Handmade . 33 Mill Biographies . 6 Gampi Torinoko . 24 Okawara Student . 33 Glassine . 25 Goyu . 25 Parchtone . 33 SHEETS Pergamenata Parchment . 33 Hahnemuhle . 25 Pergamenata Pearl . 33 Acquerello by Magnani . 12 Hosho . 26 Pescia . 33 Annigoni by Magnani . 12 Plike . 34 Arches “88” Silkscreen . 12 Incisioni . 26 Arches Cover . 12 India Hemp . 26 Revere Felt . 34 Arches MBM . 12 India Silk . 26 Revere Suede . 34 Arches Platine . 12 India Watercolor . 26 Revere Platinum Cover . .34 Arches Text Wove . 13 Iyo Glazed . 26 Rives BFK . 34 Arches Watercolor . 13 Rives de Lin (Moulin du Gue) . 35 Artistico Watercolor . 13 Japanese Cane . 26 Rives Heavyweight . 35 Arturo Book and Cover . 13 Johannot . 26 Rives Lightweight . 35 Asamashi . 14 Rosaspina . 35 Aurora . 14 Keaykolour . 27 Rossi Decoratives . 35 Kinwashi . 27 Bertini . 14 Kitakata . 27 Sanwa Silk Unryu . 36 Bockingford Tints . 15 Kochi . 27 Sanwa Tissue . 36 Bockingford Watercolor . 15 Saunders Waterford W/C . 36 Brillanca . 15 Lanaquarelle Watercolor . 27 Savanna . 37 Legion Archival Tissue . 27 Savoy . 37 Canaletto . 15 Legion Art Coated Cover . 28 Sekishu . .37 Cocktail . 15 Legion Bamboo . 28 Shine . 38 Colorplan . 17 Legion Interleaving . 28 Silk Tissue . 38 Colorplan Digital . 20 Lenox 100 . 28 Sirio Pearl . 38 Colorplan Labels . 20 Lens Tissue (“L” Tissue) . 28 Sirio Ultra Black . 38 Corkskin . 21 Lettra . 28 So . Thousands of other books, including many of the most important and unusual, never found their way into my catalogues, having been quickly sold before their descriptions could appear in print. In the last fifteen years, since my Catalogue 100 appeared, many truly exceptional books passed through my hands. Of these, I would like to mention three. The first, sold in 2003 was a copy of the first edition in Latin of the Columbus Letter of 1493. This is now in a private collection. In 2004, I was offered a book which I scarcely dreamed of owning: the Narratio Prima of Rheticus, printed in 1540. Presenting the first announcement of the heliocentric system of Copernicus, this copy in now in the Linda Hall Library in Kansas City, Missouri. Both of the books were sold before they could appear in my catalogues. Finally, the third book is an absolutely miraculous uncut copy in the original limp board wallet binding of Galileo’s Sidereus Nuncius of 1610. Appearing in my Catalogue 178, this copy was acquired by the Library of Congress. This is the first and, probably the last, “personal” catalogue I will prepare.

  • William Blake PART I
126 Of the fifty-three more-or-less complete copies of Blake's writings in private hands, only one has moved to a public collection: VICTORIA UNIVERSITY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. This is Songs of Innocence and of Experience (i), a posthumous copy watermarked with fragments of J WHATMAN | 1831, lacking ten of fifty-four prints. A curious feature of copy i is that one print (pl. 23) is watercoloured (see Illus. 1A), perhaps by Catherine Blake (d. 18 October 1831 [BR (2) 546]) or Frederick Tatham who printed the posthumous copies of Blake's works in Illuminated Printing. The colouring is distinct from the colour-printed copy of the same etching in VICTORIA UNIVERSITY IN THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO. The public appearance of Songs (i) has permitted the correction of minor errors in the account of it in Blake Books. COPIES UNTRACED America (S), Book of Thel (S), Descriptive Catalogue (V), Europe (N), First Book of Urizen (K), For Children (F), Poetical Sketches (Q), Songs of Innocence and of Experience (CC, q), "To the Public", Visions (S) are untraced. Six of these ten untraced copies in Illuminated Printing - - America (S), Book of Thel (S), Europe (N), First Book of Urizen (K), For Children (F), and Visions (S) -- have not been recorded since they were sold for the Flaxman family in 1862. • Preservation and Conservation (PAC) Programme Frequently Asked Questions
Preservation and Conservation (PAC) Programme Frequently Asked Questions Paper conservation by using Japanese paper, washi Prepared by PAC Japan Q: What is washi? A: Washi, or Japanese paper, can be made from the fibre of kozo (paper mulberry family), mitsumata (daphne family), or gampi (daphne family), but the most commonly used material is kozo. The traditional papermaking process for kozo starts by steaming bundles of kozo bark to remove the outer dark layer and often the intermediate green layer. The white inner bark is cooked in a mild alkaline solution such as wood ash or soda ash to remove lignin and other impurities. Strong alkali such as caustic soda were not traditionally used during this process. Next, the fibre is beaten by hand until it is fine enough to be dispersed in water with a small amount of a dispersion agent, neri, a mucilagenous substance from tororo-aoi (abelmoschus manihot) plants. Finally, the paper maker dips a flexible Japanese papermaking mould in the vat of fibres and water to form sheets of paper using a technique called nagashizuki. Washi has been manufactured and used in Japan from more than 1000 years. In 2014, three kinds of washi were added to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: sekishu-banshi, hon-minoshi, and hosokawa-shi. Nowadays there is no clear definition of what can or can’t be called washi. It can be manufactured by machine or by hand, using a flexible Japanese mould or a fixed paper mould, with or without chemicals. Some kinds of washi contain imported kozo or wood pulp fibres.
