It was light enough to see the city and part of the desert, but it was still dark enough so that they hadn't turned the signs off for the day. I never saw such a sight in my life. It looked like an entire city was lurching across the desert. It was an incredible movement! I rented a car and started driving and I saw an extraordinary thing: the horizon, the skyline, was not made of trees and it was not made of buildings. It was all signs. Tom Wolfe (in Stern 1979:11) The towns of the desert end abruptly; they have no surround. And they have about them something of the mirage, which may vanish at any instant. You have only to see Las Vegas, sublime Las Vegas, rise in its entirety from the desert at nightfall bathed in phosphorescent lights, and return to the desert when the sun rises, after exhausting its intense, superficial energy all night long, still more intense in the first light of dawn, to understand the secret of the desert and the signs to be found there: a spellbinding discontinuity, an all-enveloping, intermittent radiation. STANLEY Mckay
STANLEY McKAY Considered one of the most enterprising actor/managers during the first three decades of the twentieth century by his Australian contemporaries, Stanley McKay was one of the first showmen in the 20th century to tour pantomime around Australia and New Zealand using tents as his theatre space (this being some five years prior to Philip Lytton). The Morning Bulletin (Rockhampton) notes in an article on McKay in 1971, that his "memoirs are studded with the names of the great ones in Australian stage life over more than half a century" (n. pag.). Those he was closely associated with include: Sir Ben Fuller, Walter Bentley, Edward Carroll and George Birch, Kate Howarde, Harry Clay, George Wallace, Jim Gerald, John Cosgrove, Nellie Ferguson and her mother Helen Furgus, Frank Neil and Nellie Stewart. Among the numerous tributes accorded McKay during his extraordinarily long career as a showman are two particularly frequent comments - that he had a seemingly inexhaustible energy level and that his good nature was such that he never lost a friend. McKay's popularity as a manager can also be seen by the length of time that the various members of his companies stayed with him - even under the harshest of travelling conditions. 1879-1908 Stanley McKay was born Henry Stanley McKay in the southern NSW highlands township of Tumut (NSW) on 9 October, 1879. Educated at the local public school, he developed an early love of drama, particularly Shakespeare. A few weeks after completing his schooling he moved to Sydney to take up a position with the Bank of Corporal Stanley McKay New South Wales. -

Tales to astonish Classic storytelling fuels Double Edge Theatre’s ‘The Arabian Nights’ Story by Don Stewart With a backdrop of a 100 acres of fields and woodlands, the only limits to the productions of Double Edge Theatre are the boundaries of the imagination. This month, a cast of 17 players will lead you to a variety of venues – a rushing stream, a well-tended garden and a post-and-beam barn, a floodlit meadow and a fantastical pond – as the stories of the “The Arabian Nights” unspool. The play, based upon tales known in the Middle Eastern culture as “The 1,001 Nights,” almost didn’t take flight. Although co-director and actor Matthew Glassman and actor Carlos Uriona were strongly attracted to the work, the company’s artistic director, Stacy Klein, had misgivings. “I thought it was too racy,” she said, a few days after a performance.”The book has a lot of sex and sexuality. As discussions continued, the trio became aware of the Russian artist Marc Chagall’s post-World War II color lithographs devoted to the theme of “The Arabian Nights.” The artist, best known for his childlike dreamscapes of fly- ing lovers and airborne animals, won a Venice Biennial award in 1948 for the series. The imagery won Klein over and provided a fresh idea for the play. They’re portrayed basically as sub-humans – ‘Untermenchen’, a term used by Nazis to vilify gypsies and Jews. These images have been with us for more than a century. For thirty years I’ve looked at how we, particular when I say we, image-makers, have projected Arabs on silver screens. -

Arab Stereotypes and American Educators by Marvin Wingfield and Bushra Karaman When American children hear the word "Arab," what is the first thing that often comes to mind? It might well be the Arabian Nights fantasy imagery in the Disney film "Aladdin," a film which has been very popular in theaters and on video and is sometimes shown in school classrooms. Yet Arab Americans have problems with this film. Although in many ways it is charming, artistically impressive and one of the few American films to feature an Arab hero or heroine, a closer look reveals some disturbing features. The film's light-skinned lead characters, Aladdin and Jasmine, have Anglicized features and Anglo American accents. This is in contrast to the other characters who are dark-skinned, swarthy and villainous - cruel palace guards or greedy merchants with "Arabic" accents and grotesque facial features. The film's opening song sets the tone: Oh, I come from a land, From a faraway place Where the caravan camels roam. Where they cut off your ear If they don't like your face. It's barbaric, but hey, it's home. Thus the film immediately characterizes the Arab world as alien, exotic and “other.” Arab Americans see this film as perpetuating the tired stereotype of the Arab world as a place of deserts and camels, of arbitrary cruelty and barbarism. Therefore, Arab Americans raised a cry of protest regarding “Aladdin.” The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) challenged Disney and persuaded the studio to change a phrase in the lyrics for the video version of the film to say: “It's flat and immense, and the heat is intense. -
