Hi Members, Front Cover Photo: Simon Critchley TWO KEY REMINDERS FOR THIS MEETING. THE UPSTAIRS BAR WILL BE OPEN FROM 6.30 FOR YOU TO ENJOY AN EARLY CHRISTMAS DRINK WITH and Cliff Rothenburg representing OTHER MEMBERS AND TLCC at the Marine and camping show AS IT IS OUR LAST MEETING FOR 2013 PLEASE BRING A SUPPER PLATE TO SHARE Wayville. Photo by Darryl Royans As November is our last meeting we do not have a guest speaker although there will be a trip report. Some 25 members attended the SAPOL Road safety Centre at Thebarton in October for what was an informative afternoon on both vehicle modifications and vehicle weights, with detail provided for both single vehicles and those who Next General Meeting: tow campers and vans. th It was quite apparent that the legalities regarding vehicle modifications has been 25 November 2013 ~ 7.30pm tightened. Today all that can be achieved simply is a modest 50mm lift. Beyond that an engineer needs to be engaged (at considerable cost) and the vehicle Trip Report: subject to Lane Change Manoeuvre Testing. A lift can be achieved through suspension upgrade, body lifting or Tyres/rims. Those who have a lift through suspension upgrade and then fit oversize tyres may find that combination puts Guest Speaker: them over 50mm. If over the 50mm there may be potential Insurance issues for vehicle and for individuals under personal liability if involved in an accident. It is important to note that whilst these changes are recent they apply to all vehicles regardless of when modifications were made. We are told that vehicles that appear to be over 50mm raised height are being queried with Police seeking evidence of engineering compliance which must be carried in the vehicle. With tyre changes the combination of rim/tyre cannot increase or decrease the vehicles standard tyre size diameter (as per your vehicle placard) by greater than 15mm. This 15mm is quite minimal. Knowing I changed to Cooper AT3’s recently I thought I would check mine to find my diameter had increased by 13.5 mm so I am still compliant (just). There are any number of web sites that you can load tyre detail in to check your individual situation and if you have changed tyre size I would encourage you to do this check. The other interesting aspect was on lights. The maximum permitted is 6 and any additional lights must be in pairs. Of interest if you have separate high and low beam lights (common on some 80 series) then you already have 4 so can Newsletter Articles Deadline: only then fit 2 driving lights that must be of equal light intensity. As for those rows of lights that adorn roof racks well they are definitely out. (Read as illegal) It was great to see a good number of guests at our October meeting. Many had Sunday December 8th, 2013 spoken with Club members at Wayville and quite a number have lodged an application to join. Please help to make them welcome at our meetings. Darryl Royans Landcruising Australia Wide November 2013 Page 3 training training calendar Something that I mentioned a few months ago occurred again during the Edmund Morries Morgan training weekend in October. When I left work on the Friday at Education Officer lunch time, there was still nine people who were expected to turn up. One Telephone : 8278 5777 of the trainers had already been cancelled as the numbers had reduced due email : [email protected] to several factors. On the Saturday morning, three trainees turned up. As one was sick and Ralph Abbot another had mechanical problems. This meant that four people did not have Assistant Education Officer the decency or manners to notify us that they had no intention of turning up Telephone : 8269 7378 at all. Some of these were involved in other activities that they obviously email : [email protected] planned several weeks, if not months, ahead. This is totally unacceptable. A new policy will be put into effect. Anyone who does not notify us that they will not turn up for training will be warned the first time, banned from training for six months for the second time. TLCCSA training Third time it will be a year. The tyre repair session is now full. There is a limit how many can fit into team for 2013 Allan’s sheds. Those on the GPS course should have received emails, probably completed the training when this is printed. ASSESSORS

Landcruising Australia Wide November 2013 Page 5 Conserving History Little is known about a man named McAlpine or the crude hut he built in a beautiful valley in the . McAlpine was an Englishman and is believed to have arrived in Australia around the time of the first world war as a remittance man. That simply means that his wealthy family gave him money to go away some place far and don’t bother them, again. His “crime against the family” is thought to have involved a young lady but details are simply not known. The Reynolds family on whose property the hut sits, together with a couple of historians with the Friends of Flinders Ranges National Park, have searched for information about the mysterious character but with no success. Only a photograph taken of McAlpine in front of his hut in 1929 is proof that he ever existed. But even the family who had the photo in their album had no idea who the man was and therefore can throw no light on him or his home. Our Club involvement with the hut began in 2010 when Brendan Reynolds, owner of Willow Springs Station, saw the work we were doing on Gum Creek Station to eradicate cactus plants. Brendan expressed the wish “that he could find some volunteers interested in restoring a heritage hut on his property”. Maybe a couple of us made some encouraging grunts at the time because some time later he asked if we might be interested in the restoration. We showed sufficient interest for a few of us when visiting the Flinders, to call in and inspect the hut. It was a mess. Stone walls had crumbled badly, the roof was completely gone, window and door frames had rotted away, and the floor was littered with the bones of kangaroos which had sought a degree of shelter in their dying days. Enough interest was expressed by enough members for the possibility of us taking on the project to be treated seriously. The Environment Officer took a proposal to the Club Committee which approved our involvement. When in late 2011 we advised Brendan and Carmel Reynolds that we would tackle the task if they provided the materials needed, they were delighted. With the Club’s busy Trips program and full environment schedule we had to wait until May 2012 to begin the project. For one week in May 16 members bunked in the Willow Springs Shearers’ Quarters and got to work on restoring a building built almost a century ago and left to the elements for more than the last 50 years. Master planner and engineer Peter Trezise led the charge and organised material and tools. For a week all laboured hard to remove the accumulated debris and begin to put some semblance of character back into the hut. By the end of the week the stone walls had been topped, window and door frames installed, external walls repointed, and the original stone floor exposed. Week 2 of the project saw 13 Club members camped on site in October. Weather-wise it was the worst October week imaginable, cold, wet, and windy. Somehow none of that seemed to slow progress on the hut. Peter completed stonework on the chimney, John Revitt, Geoff Trezise and Ray Gedritis put in the roofing timbers and built the front veranda, Ron Hewitson and Joe Kennedy provide mix upon mix of mortar, while Robyn, Diana, Lyn, Ruth, Meredith and Helen laboured to completer stone pointing, assist the “tradesmen” and carry out a myriad of little tasks including provision of scones for morning tea. By the end of the week the transformation of a lonely pile of stones in a quiet but remote part of the Flinders Ranges was amazing. The building would again be liveable. In fact the team tried that idea by enjoying lunch and morning tea inside. Could you imagine any Club trip where there was no merriment throughout the day and massive amounts of fun when all were together? Despite the amount of work tackled this trip was no exception. Throughout the day the jokes and wisecracks heard around the worksite were a constant source of amusement and no doubt would have set a great model for any workplace. Although the hut has reached “lockup” stage and we could walk away from it, most of the team believe we should take another few days there to repoint the internal stone walls. These, as with the external surfaces, were originally held together by mud mortar and the thinking is that by putting a lime based mortar between the stones the building will stand for another century. So, some time next year we will make a final journey to McAlpine’s Hut. Property owner Brendan Reynolds plans to erect a sign in front of the hut giving what details he knows about it and its inhabitant, and recognising the work of the Club in restoring it as a piece of living history.

Cherry Picking Update - December 2013 Some of you may have already heard to expect very high prices for cherries this season. That’s because we didn’t get the cold snap of around zero or below morning temperatures for about a week needed to trigger the trees into flower. While there are flowers, many or most of them will just die and fall off. Unfortunately this has happened to the cherry orchard that we normally attend and owners Ron and Cheryl have decided that not to open up this year. The thought of tree damage just to get at the few cherries that do survive is not worth the risk. A very difficult decision to make so let’s hope that things get better for a cherry picking social next year.

ACCESS OPEN TO MARALINGA

The atomic bomb test site at Maralinga in SA is now open for visitors following the radioactivity clean up of the site in recent years. Host, Robin Matthews, the site manager, conducts full day tours with a fascinating and at times alarming story to tell about the activity on the site and takes guests to the very spots where the test explosions took place in the 1950's. The bomb testing project was huge and we were left wondering why Australians knew so little about what was happening and the risks that were being taken. The impact on the aboriginals was deplorable. Camping with ample space is available at the near deserted Maralinga township site and there are basic cabins available.

Robin Matthews the Maralinga Caretaker/Manager runs escorted tag a long tours of the area and this is about the only way to get into Maralinga. He is a real bushy who has been working in the area forever and his knowledge is unbelievable. Robin is the only person I have ever met who when introduced to a group of about 16 people can immediately recall all the names and put them with the correct faces.

Robin lead us through bush tracks and then onto 1950's bitumen roads to the Maralinga Village where we were based off and on for about a week and a half. The range tour conducted by Robin explaining and visiting many sites is exceptional and the only way to really experience the area.

There is not enough room to explain all we did, but some of the highlights that stick with me are below. The amount of money that must have been spent would make the mind boggle.

Hundreds of kilometres of bitumen roads in very good condition. An airport with a 2.5km runway, big enough that it was one of the emergency Space Shuttle landing strips. The strip is built to take big aircraft; the touchdown area at each end is reinforced with 15 feet of concrete. The plane parking bay is big enough for the RFDS to land on. The parking bay water runoff is channeled to a dam and then pumped into huge holding tanks that are the total water supply for the village.

All original buildings are made from aluminum shipped from the UK, the frames, cladding and ceilings all alloy. Apparently in the early 1950's steel was scarce but not aluminum so no white ants or rust.

There are over 200 burial pits spread throughout the restricted area for waste and surplus equipment. The UK authorities claimed they had cleaned up and made safe the whole area in 1964, but subsequent investigations found this was not the case and in the 1990's a major clean up and burial was carried out taking several years.

Part of Robin's job is to monitor all burial pits and signage on a regular basis.

In summary an excellent and informative trip, well worthwhile. Trips can be arranged by contacting Robin Mathews his details are below. Be aware Robin runs a one man show with a lot of responsibilities and can be away a lot of the time but if you email him he will get back to you. It may take a few days or a week.

Landcruising Australia Wide November 2013 Page 17 Registered Training Organisation (RTO) Status - Update

The DTU has signed an agreement with another RTO. This means that we can continue with nationally recognised training again. As of today, we can also start selling manuals again. The training process will not change at all. All current documentation that needs to be completed for training is still required. These are the attendance sheets, feedback sheets and OH&S assessment of the training site.

The standards of training will be kept at the current level. The quality and standard of training will therefore not change due to another RTO issuing the certificates. We will also continue to only train those who are members of a club affiliated to 4WDSA.

The costs to trainees will not increase. The DTU will absorb the costs to the RTO. This will be reviewed at a later date, but is unlikely to change for around twelve months. Big Red - by Greg Royans For the issuing of certificates, books will need to be sent to the DTU. The ASQA feedback sheet will also need to be sent in. This is available from the 4WDSA website. If it not supplied, the book will be rejected. It is a requirement by the RTO that the ASQA feedback sheet is completed for each certificate issued.

The certificates will be sent to the DTU by the RTO and forwarded to the trainee as with current certificates. Replica Beadell theodolite atop Mt Beadell As we are continuing to offer nationally recognised training, trainers and assessors will need to maintain their currency. This involves continually being involved with training, doing professional development and getting their books audited.

We are unable to train new trainers and assessors. Those that want to become DTU trainers and assessors will have to do these courses with another RTO.

The driving component of the advisor course will be re-introduced. This is to ensure that the trainer /assessor have sufficient driving knowledge and capability to train to the standard the DTU requires.

It will be possible, and recommended, that those that want to become DTU trainers or assessors complete the driving component with the DTU before they do the trainer or assessor courses. We do not want someone to go through the effort and cots of completing the trainer or assessor course to find the DTU do not rate their driving capability as sufficient.

Wild hops
