2019/20 SA Arid Lands Community Grant Summary PROJECT APPLICANT AMOUNT PROJECT SUMMARY DISTRICT COMMUNIWUE Discovering the Arkaba $8,820 This project is one component of a biological survey aimed at assessing and documenting the natural values of the Arkaba North Flinders Small Ground- Conservancy Conservancy - an area that is an important refuge for biological diversity lying adjacent to the Ikara-Flinders Ranges Dwelling Fauna Northern National Park and providing ecological links with mountain ranges extending into the southern Flinders Ranges north of of Arkaba Flinders NRM Quorn. Despite its importance for nature conservation, no previous surveys to determine the range of small ground- District dwelling fauna that exist on this property have occurred. The project includes the purchase of materials to install permanent pitfall trapping lines at six sites located in a range of vegetation communities and is part of a broader biological survey that will improve knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area. Blinman Cactus Blinman $5,000 This project will continue to support the wider community of volunteers who have developed a commitment to assist with North Flinders Control Progress the control of cactus species listed on the WONS list, in the Blinman district. There has been a coordinated control effort Volunteer Association over a number of years involving landholders, NRM agencies and volunteer groups who have developed skills in surveying, Support Project cactus injecting, and spreading cochineal bio-control. Rabbit warren Bon Reserve – $10,000 Rabbit warrens will be mapped in a targeted area on Bon Station Reserve, in collaboration with local Traditional Owners. Kingoonya mapping and Bush Heritage The warrens identified will be managed via ripping or fumigation, following a cultural assessment to identify any culturally significant Aboriginal sites that may be in the same location. Rabbit grazing has been identified as a key threatening warren ripping process to Key Conservation Targets for Bon Bon station reserve. Effective rabbit management is reliant on knowing where rabbit warrens are located throughout the landscape. Macropod Boolcoomatta $9,500 This project is part of on-going management and research into the impact of overabundant macropods in the North North East Exclusion Fence Station Eastern pastoral region of South Australia. Macropod overabundance has been widely documented in recent years, but Program Reserve – Bush there is limited quantified evidence of the impact of macropods on the open chenopod plains habitat, which is critical for Heritage threatened species including the critically endangered Plains Wanderer. This project will add to existing infrastructure on 1 Boolcoomatta that has been established to demonstrate the impact of macropods, but to date there are no existing exclusion areas in the most fragile habitat on the reserve. Fauna Survey Coward $9,664 The project will build on previous work at the site by assessing changes in abundance and diversity of fauna species at the Marla Springs Coward Springs Wetland Heritage site following 23 years of management under a Heritage Agreement. It will establish Oodnadatta long-term monitoring sites for small mammals, survey birds at the site, and compare the current abundance and diversity to surveys undertaken at the site in 1997 and 2006. This project will also determine the feral cat, red fox and weed management requirements on the property, in order to build on past pest control undertaken by the owners and to support the persistence of native fauna species in to the future. The establishment of long-term fauna monitoring sites and the purchase of trapping equipment will enable the landholders to increase their feral pest control program on the property and monitor the outcomes of this work long-term. Monitoring of Friends of $2,362 The project involves environmental monitoring of three permanent spring wetlands in the Northern Flinders Ranges NRM North Flinders Northern Vulkathunha- District. These springs are Weetootla and Yuwanhinya springs in the Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park and Flinders Ranges Gammon Nepouie spring on the Wooltana pastoral lease. Springs Ranges National Park Inc. Enhancing Friends of $1,945 This project comprises a reprint of the three brochures which are available at the Strangways and Peake locations and are Marla Awareness re Mound also made generally available to promote community appreciation regarding the values of the mound springs and the need Oodnadatta for good management. GAB Springs in Springs SA Land Felz Grazing- $10,000 Contour ploughing will be continued with using level lines marked out and single furrows ploughed to build a bank on both North Flinders Rehabilitation Geoff Fels sides. The construction of contour banks will lift the wind off the ground to stop top soil blowing away. When it rains the banks and furrows will keep most of the water where it falls, reducing run off in the case of heavy rain, and therefore reducing the risk of erosion. The banks and furrows also hold seeds and give native trees, bushes and grasses a better chance to grow. Iron Knob Re- Iron Knob $1,159 Re-vegetation at the Iron Knob Rubbish Dump will continue and includes completing a shelter belt between the rubbish Gawler Ranges Vegetation Progress dump and the township to reduce dust and rubbish blowing into the community’s residential areas. Sturdy shrubs (predominantly Eremophilas) will be planted along the War Memorial Oval which is central within the township. This will Association enhance the local park where similar plants will also be planted around the park’s perimeter. 2 African Rue and Merna Mora $3,470 This project aims to stop the infestations of African Rue and Noogoora Burr in the Moralana and Bunyeroo flood systems North Flinders Noogoora Burr Station and prevent further spreading outside of the flood area. The plants have the potential to choke out all native species and destroy palatable and nutritious vegetation. Spot spraying will be conducted to ensure the best results and protect native Project species which may surround the weed. Soil Millers Creek- $9,000 Billa Kalina Pastoral aims to reinstate natural water flow behaviours by rehabilitating gully erosion beside roads, removing Kingoonya Rehabilitation (Billa Kalina windrows, and implementing whoaboys to slow water runoff down. Generations ago a road was put in redirecting water to run along it heading south, away from a canegrass swamp where it is naturally supposed to flow. The works will see the Pastoral) water flows restored to the canegrass swamp and erosion gullies rehabilitated. Management of Nipapanha $5,000 The project will fence a substantial area (c. 400 x 400m = 16ha) of this community on the lower slopes of the reserve, with North Flinders Mulga Very Low Community different treatments to be applied to different parts of the enclosure to encourage Mulga regeneration. The areas will be monitored for recruitment and intensity of recruitment under the different treatments. Erosion will also be reduced through Woodland Aboriginal encouraging increased vegetation cover. Corporation Algebuckina Trevor $9,500 This project aims to address a system of gullies, arroyos and badlands at the Neales Peake confluence that currently capture Marla Waterhole Williams (The the entire flow of both the Peake and Neales Rivers, depriving the lower Neales floodplain of all the water it might Oodnadatta otherwise receive. The project includes having an Environmental Consultant inspect the gully erosion, analyse GIS and Protection Peak Station) satellite imagery and prepare a plan for remedial soil conservation for the property owner to undertake. This information will be shared with the pastoral community. Little Warren and $9,750 Completion of the upper level of the Little Balcoracana Project at the Willow Well Site in the Grindstone Paddock on North Flinders Balcoracana Barbara Wirrealpa Station. This would complete the remedial soil conservation of the whole catchment area of the Little Balcoracana Creek Project which was started in 2011 and nearly completed in February 2018 using the Community Grant Catchment Fargher Funding 2017/18. The project will continue to build a series of erosion banks to slow and spread the water into the Project - Willow surrounding country. This would then complete the Project which started with banks at Drug Creek then on to the area Well Precinct called Dead Ram, Carrion and Willow Well, which is at the top of the catchment. 3 4 .
