For his mix «shots were fired» for the section «war» from the Norient exhibition Seismographic Sounds the Irish radio journalist Bernard Clarke combined radio news samples with musically deconstructed war sounds. «shots were fired» is a deeply personal response to a tragedy and farce played out in a Paris dripping with blood and a media whipping up a frenzy; to and of the forgotten victims in France and around the world; and of and to the so-called world leaders who seized on this outrage for a media opportunity, a «selfie». Western societies are not the havens of rationalism that they often proclaim themselves to be. The West is a polychromatic space, in which both freedom of thought and tightly regulated speech exist, and in which disavowals of deadly violence happen at the same time as clandestine torture. And yet, at moments when Western societies consider themselves under attack, the discourse is quickly dominated by an ahistorical fantasy of long- suffering fortitude in the face of provocation. Yet European and American history are so strongly marked by efforts to control speech that the persecution of rebellious thought stands as a bedrock of these societies. Witch burnings, heresy trials, and the untiring work of the Inquisition shaped Europe, and these ideas extended into American history as well and took on American modes, from the breaking of slaves to the genocide of American Indians to censuring of critics of «Operation Iraqi Freedom».

Tipperary, died peacefully, at St Theresa's Hospital Clogheen, surrounded by her loving family. Deeply regretted by her loving husband Michael, sons and daughters, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, sisters and brothers-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. Reposing at Clogheen Mortuary on Wednesday evening from 5pm until 8pm with removal to the Church of the Holy Family, Ardfinnan, for 8.45pm.     Walking around Maynooth, what is your general impression of the town? Well, on July 19th this year the Tidy Towns adjudicators visited Maynooth and in assessing their general impression of the town we scored just 4 out of 10 and once again our overall mark at 162 out of 300 is low-by national standards. But first of all we have to compliment the Tidy Towns Committee and their Community Employment Scheme workers who have made valiant efforts over the pastfew years to improve the town's appearance. The committee are a group of volunteers who give freely of their time to a cause which, at time, must look like an uphill struggle. Every Sunday morning they are to be found cleaning up the litter on the Main Street. This is not a job for which there is a queue of volunteers. Each year Maynooth's score in the Tidy Towns Competition has edged up byafew marks and most of the credit must go to the local committee. The fact re- mains, how- ever, that Maynooth is a less tidy and more little prone town than most who enter the com- petition. So, who IS to blame? Per hap s Maynooth's greatest prob- lem in this area is that we suf- fer from civic neglect. Towns of an equiva- lent size across the country seem to benefit much more from their 10- cal authorities. A Little Closer for Printing Kildare Co. Council's aspi- rations for Maynooth are high. Various Development Plans see us a,s a 'flagship town' in the fu- ture but these aspirations have not been matched by a presence on the ground.
