Shots Were Fired | norient.com 1 Oct 2021 02:06:01 Shots Were Fired MIXTAPE by Bernard Clarke War is the biggest and most horrible drama of human kind. Yet the noises of war – everything from swords clanging to modern machine guns and bombs – have fascinated musicians and composers for centuries. For his mix «shots were fired» for the section «war» from the Norient exhibition Seismographic Sounds the Irish radio journalist Bernard Clarke combined radio news samples with musically deconstructed war sounds. «shots were fired» is a deeply personal response to a tragedy and farce played out in a Paris dripping with blood and a media whipping up a frenzy; to and of the forgotten victims in France and around the world; and of and to the so-called world leaders who seized on this outrage for a media opportunity, a «selfie». Western societies are not the havens of rationalism that they often proclaim themselves to be. The West is a polychromatic space, in which both freedom of thought and tightly regulated speech exist, and in which disavowals of deadly violence happen at the same time as clandestine torture. And yet, at moments when Western societies consider themselves under attack, the discourse is quickly dominated by an ahistorical fantasy of long- suffering fortitude in the face of provocation. Yet European and American history are so strongly marked by efforts to control speech that the persecution of rebellious thought stands as a bedrock of these societies. Witch burnings, heresy trials, and the untiring work of the Inquisition shaped Europe, and these ideas extended into American history as well and took on American modes, from the breaking of slaves to the genocide of American Indians to censuring of critics of «Operation Iraqi Freedom».

  • 8Th September 2018 WELCOME We Are Happy and Honoured to Introduce Another Instalment of What Has Become a “Can’T Miss” Weekend on the Irish Political Calendar
1 kennedysummerschool.ie 6th - 8th September 2018 WELCOME We are happy and honoured to introduce another instalment of what has become a “can’t miss” weekend on the Irish political calendar. Since its founding in 2012, the Kennedy Summer School has featured leading figures from the worlds of politics, academia, media, culture, business – and more. Attendees in New Larry Donnelly Ross this 6th - 8th of September 2018 will be witness to a similarly strong line-up of speakers, moderators, entertainers and other high-profile contributors. 2018 is the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy and the summer school will consider his all too short life and extraordinary legacy. We are especially delighted to welcome home to County Wexford his daughter, Kerry Kennedy, who is our very special guest of honour this year. Additionally, a dear friend of three of the Kennedy brothers, Gerard Doherty, will share Dr. Brian Murphy some of the political tales and personal anecdotes from his new memoir, ‘They Were My Friends – Jack, Bob and Ted: My Life in and out of Politics’. 2018 is also the 50th Anniversary of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park and Arboretum – a fitting tribute to the Boston-born man who rose to become President of the United States. He never forgot that he was of Ireland – we will celebrate this wonderful monument and treasured resource with a dinner hosted by the Office of Public Works on Saturday evening. 2018 will also be a year in which the Brexit process moves towards its final stage. A powerhouse panel, with both vast expertise on the key issues and rich personal awareness of what it could all mean, will examine the myriad complexities that have flowed since this political earthquake hit more than two years ago.

3 / 4 of SEPTEMBER 2021 NEW ROSS, CO. WEXFORD, IRELAND. 1 kennedysummerschool.ie 3rd - 4th September 2021 We are very excited that RTÉ’s long-time Northern Editor, Tommie Gorman, will do a public interview reflecting on his career covering momentous highs and lows and evaluating what might lie ahead. In a case of turning the tables, Tommie Gorman will be interviewed by a man who he put countless difficult WELCOME questions to over the course of decades, former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern. And we could think of no one better to open this year’s Kennedy Summer School than Professor Luke O’Neill, who has become a household name as he has been among the most sought after and often the most prescient expert when it comes to combatting coronavirus. It is fitting that the public Dear Friends: interview he will sit for after officially launching the summer school will be the inaugural Kennedy Summer School session bearing the name of our founder, the late Noel Whelan. It is with tremendous pride, gratitude and – to be perfectly frank – relief that we now announce the 2021 Kennedy Summer School At every future summer school, there will be a session programme. All of our lives have been on hold and many of us that commemorates the life and legacy of Noel Whelan. While it have been directly affected by Covid-19. Our very best wishes go could come in any number of different formats, it will always to those of you who have suffered from serious illness and our focus on the issues and causes that animated his extraordinary and much too short life.

Walking around Maynooth, what is your general impression of the town? Well, on July 19th this year the Tidy Towns adjudicators visited Maynooth and in assessing their general impression of the town we scored just 4 out of 10 and once again our overall mark at 162 out of 300 is low-by national standards. But first of all we have to compliment the Tidy Towns Committee and their Community Employment Scheme workers who have made valiant efforts over the pastfew years to improve the town's appearance. The committee are a group of volunteers who give freely of their time to a cause which, at time, must look like an uphill struggle. Every Sunday morning they are to be found cleaning up the litter on the Main Street. This is not a job for which there is a queue of volunteers. Each year Maynooth's score in the Tidy Towns Competition has edged up byafew marks and most of the credit must go to the local committee. The fact re- mains, how- ever, that Maynooth is a less tidy and more little prone town than most who enter the com- petition. So, who IS to blame? Per hap s Maynooth's greatest prob- lem in this area is that we suf- fer from civic neglect. Towns of an equiva- lent size across the country seem to benefit much more from their 10- cal authorities. A Little Closer for Printing Kildare Co. Council's aspi- rations for Maynooth are high. Various Development Plans see us a,s a 'flagship town' in the fu- ture but these aspirations have not been matched by a presence on the ground.
