Phylogenetic Relationships of Freshwater Fishes of the Genus Capoeta (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) in Iran

The monophyly of the genus and the existence of three previously described main clades (Mesopotamian, Anatolian- Iranian, and Aralo- Caspian) were confirmed. However, the phylogeny proposed novel taxonomic findings within Capoeta. Results of GMYC, bPTP, and phylogenetic analyses were similar and suggested that species diversity in Iran is currently underestimated. At least four can- didate species, Capoeta sp4, Capoeta sp5, Capoeta sp6, and Capoeta sp7, are awaiting description. Capoeta capoeta comprises a species complex with distinct genetic line- ages. The divergence times of the three main Capoeta clades are estimated to have occurred around 15.6–12.4 Mya, consistent with a Mio- Pleistocene origin of the di- versity of Capoeta in Iran. The changes in Caspian Sea levels associated with climate fluctuations and geomorphological events such as the uplift of the Zagros and Alborz Mountains may account for the complex speciation patterns in Capoeta in Iran. -
Fishing at the Galata Bridge, Đstanbul, in 2011-2012

The Bridge was visited regularly to collect the information on the fish species and amount caught, fishing equipment, and number of fishermen from March 2011 to March 2012. Trachurus spp. , Spicara spp. and Mugil spp. were typically seen throughout the year. In addition, with seasonal change, 20 fish species were observed. The average number of fishermen was 203 per day, and the estimated total fish catch amount at the Galata Bridge was about 64 tonnes in a year. Number of fishermen found at the Galata Bridge was constant throughout the year. Fishing materials such as fishing rods, fishing lines, baits and fishing weight, were found easily available at the bridge. This is the first systematic study on the fishing and related activities at the Galata Bridge. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Gobio sakaryaensis, a new species from the Tozman and the Porsuk streams of the Sakarya River drainage (northwestern Anatolia, Black Sea basin), is described. The species is distinguished from other gudgeons by a combination of the fol- lowing characters: breast completely scaled, scales approximately extending to isthmus; head length 27.2–30.0 % SL; 39– 42 lateral line scales; 4–6 scales between anus and anal-fin origin; 6–8 scales between posterior extremity of pelvic-fin bases and anus. A key is provided for Gobio and Romanogobio species recorded from Turkey. The word stream has many different meanings as well, and has a larger context involving several types of flowing waters. Another concept that may be used in place of rivers or streams is waterway. A waterway is defined “as a body of water that is navigable by boat” (Lerner and Lerner, 2009, 714). A “waterway can be a river, but this concept also includes lakes, oceans, and human-made canals” (Lerner and Lerner, 2009, 714). -

More than 30 non-native freshwater fish species which are introduced for the different purpose were reported in Turkey. In addition to the freshwater non-native fish species, the brackish water systems are also affected by the fish species that enter the Mediterranean Sea through the Suez Canal. This study aimed to identify non-native fish species introduced in the Mediterranean brackish water systems of Turkey. Thirteen non-native species from eleven families were identified from 15 localities along the entire Mediterranean Coast of Turkey between 2014-2017. These species are Carassius gibelio (Bloch, 1782), Pseudorasbora parva (Temminck & Schlegel, 1846), Coptodon zillii (Gervais, 1848), Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758), Gambusia holbrooki Girard, 1859, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792), Chelon carinatus (Valenciennes 1836), Equulites klunzingeri (Steindachner, 1898), Upeneus moluccensis (Bleeker, 1855), Upeneus pori Ben-Tuvia & Golani, 1989, Siganus rivulatus Forsskål & Niebuhr, 1775, Sillago suezensis Golani, Fricke & Tikochinski, 2013 and Sphyraena chrysotaenia Klunzinger, 1884. -

Abstract In the present study, conducted between 2001 and 2003, four taxa of aquatic gastropoda were identified from the Balıkdamı Wetland. All the species determined are new records for the study area, while one species Theodoxus gloeri sp. nov. is new to science. Neritidae is a representative family of an ancient group Archaeogastropoda, among Gastropoda. Theodoxus is a freshwater genus in the Neritidae, known for a dextral, rapidly grown shell ended with a large last whorl and a lunate calcareous operculum. Distribution of this genus includes Europe, also extending from North Africa to South Iran. In Turkey, 14 modern and fossil species and subspecies were mentioned so far. In this study, we aimed to uncover the gastropoda fauna of an important Wetland and describe a subterranean Theodoxus species, new to science. Galata, Pera, Beyoğlu; a Biography
GALATA, PERA, BEYOĞLU; A BIOGRAPHY Brendan Freely was born in New Jersey in 1959, and in 1960 was moved to Istanbul, where he spent his childhood and adolescence. He studied at Rockwell College in Ireland and at Yale University. Later, he traveled and performed a variety of odd jobs, including a stint with a circus in California, after which he worked as a social-worker in Boston for some years. In 1995 he returned to Istanbul, where he earns his living as a freelance literary translator. John Freely was born in New York in 1926. He joined the U.S. navy at the age of seventeen and served in commando unit in the Pacific, Burma and China for the last two years of World War II. After the war, he graduated from Iona College and received his PhD degree in physics from New York University. In 1960 he moved to Istanbul, where he taught physics, astronomy and the history of science at Robert College, which later became Boğaziçi University. His first book, Strolling Through Istanbul, co-authored with Hilary Sumner-Boyd, was published in 1972. He has written over fifty books, many of them about Turkey. Among his books published by YKY are: A History of Robert College, the American College for Girls and Boğaziçi University (2000) and the 5 volume Türkiye Uygarlıklar Rehberi [Guide to the Civilizations of Turkey] (2002). Turkey 175 TURKEY Threats to the World Heritage in the Changing Metropolitan Areas of Istanbul The Historic Areas of Istanbul on the Bosporus peninsula were in- scribed in 1985 in the World Heritage List, not including Galata and without a buffer zone to protect the surroundings. Risks for the historic urban topography of Istanbul, especially by a series of high- rise buildings threatening the historic urban silhouette, were already presented in Heritage at Risk 2006/2007 (see the visual impact as- sessment study by Astrid Debold-Kritter on pp. 159 –164). In the last years, dynamic development and transformation have changed the metropolitan areas with a new scale of building inter- ventions and private investments.
