The first will be a great and total eclipse, on Friday March 15th, at 9h. 28m. morning, but by reason of the moon's south latitude, her shadow will not touch any part of North America. The course of the general eclipse will be from southwest to north- east, from the Pacific Ocean a little west of Chili to the Arabian Gulf and southeastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The termination of this grand and sublime phenomenon will probably be witnessed from the summit of some of those stupendous monuments of ancient industry and folly, the vast and lofty pyramids on the banks of the Nile in lower Egypt. The principal cities and places that will be to- tally shadowed in this eclipse, are Valparaiso, Mendoza, Cordova, Assumption, St. Salvador and Pernambuco, in South America, and Sierra Leone, Teemboo, Tombucto and Fezzan, in Africa. At each of these places the duration of total darkness will be from one to six minutes, and several of the planets and fixed stars will probably be visible. 2. The other will also be a grand and beautiful eclipse, on Satur- day, September 7th, at 5h. 35m. evening, but on account of the Mnon's low latitude, and happening so late in the afternoon, no part of it will be visible in North America.

    Lenoir County, NC - GRANTOR-GRANTEE INDICIES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INTRODUCTION GRANTOR-GRANTEE INDICIES OF JOHNSTON, DOBBS, AND LENOIR COUNTIES Transcribed by Martha Mewborn Marble 1377 Independence Ave, SE Washington, D. C. 20003 PLEASE NOTE THAT THE ACTUAL DEEDS DO NOT EXIST TODAY. Johnston County was formed from the western part of Craven County in 1746 and in 1758, Dobbs County was formed from the eastern portion of Johnston; however, the records of Johnston went with the newly formed Dobbs. In 1779 Wayne County was formed from the western portion of Dobbs and in 1791, most of the remainder of Dobbs was divided into Glasgow - now Greene - and Lenoir Counties, and Dobbs ceased to exist. The records of early Johnston (and other Counties formed from Johnston), Wayne, Greene, and Lenoir Counties were placed at the Courthouse in Lenoir County. In 1878, a Courthouse fire in Kinston destroyed almost all these records except the original Grantee Index. Greene County also suffered a destruction of its records in a similar fire. According to Charles Holloman, a Grantor Index was prepared from the Grantee Index and both those books were saved during another Courthouse fire in 1880. I am inclined to think that the Grantor Book was the original as there are too many differences in the two books. Charles Holloman was instrumental in locating the Grantee Book at the Courthouse in Kinston many years ago and then published Books 1-5 from the Grantee Index in various issues of "The North Carolina Journal". It was not until a new Courthouse was built in the early 1980's that the Grantor Index was found.
