THE URSULINE ACADEMY ILFORD A Catholic Academy for Girls Weekly News – Issue 11 27th November 2020

Dear Parents/Guardians Headteacher’s Headlines…

Last week on BBC Lifeline Martin Kemp made an appeal for The Children’s Trust - a charity that helps children overcome brain injuries. Featured on the programme was our own Brittney Thompson who in April 2019 was involved in a near fatal car accident and suffered brain damage. Brittney attended the Children’s Trust Rehabilitation Centre at Tadworth in Surrey where she received daily physio to help her walk again and intensive therapy to re-learn the skills she had lost. Brittney is back in school and doing well but we would like to raise money for Children’s Trust as a thank you for the work they did with Brittney. We intend to have a non-uniform Day on Wednesday 16th December where will ask for a donation of £1 (or more if you can) to raise money for this worthy cause. Please give this your full support and allow your daughter to take part. We are very proud of Brittney and all she has achieved. See the link below if you would like to view the programme and see Brittney’s story. https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000prcl/lifeline-the-childrens-trust

In honour of St Cecilia’s day on November 22nd we usually hold an annual concert celebrating the musical talents of our girls. St Cecilia is of course, the Patron saint of Music. Sadly this year the concert has had to be a virtual one but it is now ready for you to view on YouTube! Many thanks to Ms. Deller and the peri teachers who have worked so hard with the girls to prepare this year’s concert. Special thanks to Mr. Tsocos who did a fantastic job editing the video! Please see the link and the credits on page 11. Well done girls!

Also in this weeks’ Newsletter we bring news of the recent Curwen Press visit to Ursuline working with Year 11 art students. See pages 8/9. We also share news of the National Youth Fun Day which some Year 9 students took part in. It did indeed look like good fun but also included time for prayer and reflection. Thanks to Cleo our Chaplain for coordinating! Serviam!

I was on the rota for this week’s virtual whole school Assembly, the theme this week was Loving and Compassionate, the Ursuline Student Profile values we are concentrating on this half term. I was very grateful for the assistance of 4 of our Year 10 students who helped with some of the readings and reflection. Thank you Aaliyah, Roxsini, Nicole and Yasmin (pictured right). The RE department have also been doing some work around being more loving and compassionate - see below.

We have had two students this week test positive for COVID, one student had not been in school during the incubation period so other students and staff were not affected. The other student in Year 8 resulted in eight students who had been in close contract being sent to self–isolate. All parents were informed by phone and followed up with a letter to confirm dates. As stated before please do not send your daughter into school if she is feeling unwell, we need to try and keep everyone safe.

We are ever striving to provide the very best for our students. In common with other schools, Ursuline has a School Fund to collect contributions from parents, School Fund is not used to support the running costs of the school but to cover costs not provided for by public funds. Examples would include extra-curricular activities, special items of equipment for music or drama or for enhancements to our facilities. Each year, we rely on your generosity to support Ursuline in its developments. Last summer we were able to redecorate the main school Hall and renovate the parquet flooring using money raised by the fund which would have otherwise remained a little ‘shabby’. We realise that these are difficult times for families too, but if ever we need your support for School Fund it is now. With a donation of just £60 per family, per year, or £20 per term you could support us to make improvements to our school building and environment and enhance your daughter’s school experience. This could really make a difference to our school community. We have taken the liberty of adding this Year’s donation to ParentPay. Alternatively, we are happy to accept a cheque, made payable to The Ursuline Academy Ilford, for £60, for the full amount for this year or £20 for this term. This payment is a voluntary contribution so some may pay less and of course you are allowed to pay more if you so wish. These are difficult times, but the school has a very strong staff and a dedicated Governing Body who are determined to continue to provide an excellent education for your daughter. Thank you so much for your support and for those parents who have already contributed. Serviam! I hope all our families are keeping safe and well. You remain in our thoughts and prayers. God bless! Keran Reilly

The Ursuline Student Profile The Ursuline student profile encapsulates a series of key values that all the Ursuline schools in Britain and Ireland are working………………. Earlier this term we focused on the value of ‘listening and attentive’. Last week in RE we focused on the value of ‘loving and compassionate’ and studied a series of incidents where Jesus showed great compassion to the people he encountered, including the ‘woman caught in adultery’ and the parable of ‘the unmerciful servant’. Gyatri 8U wrote, ‘forgiving someone means they can learn from their mistake and if you don’t forgive you might lose more than you already might have lost.’ Aisha 8U adds, ‘ forgiveness is key in Christianity because we have all sinned before, so it’d be unfair if we don’t forgive others for a mistake they have made, no body’s perfect and that’s why Jesus encourages us to forgive.’ Hiranni in 9C wrote, ‘by being loving and compassionate we show others how much we really care without being judgemental.’ ‘I thought this was really valuable because the facets of the Ursuline Student profile is a true reflection of our school here at Ursuline - an understanding, compassionate and caring community. The Ursuline Student Profile is a wonderful and inclusive set of values that can be applied to any person regardless of where they are from or what they believe. This past year has been a tumultuous one, with a countless array of challenges, yet we have battled through, with strength and optimism’ said Mr Mangerah Form Tutor 8U and English teacher, who has reinforced the importance of these qualities in form time activities and prayers. In the spring term, we will look at two new values. The first being, ’faith filled and hopeful’ as well as being ‘courageous and resilient’, look out for further updates then.

Mr McGhee Head of RE.

Ursuline Links - Feel Good Fridays for Year 11 This week at Feel Good Friday our topic was stress and how to deal with it. We discussed the impact of lockdown and how it affected motivation. Part of our discussion focussed on exam stress in particular and how positivity and building each other up is key to motivation during these times.

4

During the first lockdown stress was lower as all students didn’t know what would happen and every school was closed so we didn’t have to worry about falling behind. However, the second lockdown only happened to our year group in our school which set us slightly behind other year 11s as online learning isn’t as effective. To de stress, I personally started a new TV series to distract myself which gave me something to do other than revision so I didn’t burn out. Others use doodling and art, or nature and going for a walk to calm down but it’s important to find something to help you to de stress. It was great to discuss this topic in a safe environment and I am certain it will come up again in future sessions. Dionne Adzosii, Year 11

National Youth Fun Day Last Friday we attended National Youth Fun Day in order to celebrate National Youth Sunday which was on Sunday 22nd November. Cleo our Chaplain chose some year 9 students to join her in the chapel participating in many fun games and activities. The theme of the day was “Together” and we joined a Live Stream on YouTube with thousands of other young people and youth workers. The first thing we did was to join Cardinal Vincent Nichols who led us in prayer. Then we had talks from different people, one of which was from CAFOD who gave a short speech about supporting others and being together during this pandemic. One of the ideas they spoke about was to encourage us to write letters of support to human rights defenders thanking them for their bravery. At 12pm we all prayed The Angelus together. Constance, Mya, Wiktoria and Ayesha

The theme of National Youth Fun day was “Togetherness” and we began our day of fun by being led in prayer by the Cardinal of England. This day was about bringing together the youth of England through a live stream on YouTube which thousands of young people watched. We started by playing games in the chapel whilst listening to speakers which helped us to relax and get to know each other better. One of the highlights of our day was learning and recording the dance choreography to a song from High School Musical “We’re all in this together”. Then just as we came back from lunch we saw that our video had been shared on the live stream and they were saying how amazing we are! Our video was seen by

5

32,000 people in schools and homes across England and Wales. We all screamed and were very excited! We were so proud to show other schools what we could do. Today we had a blast and this fun day was definitely one to remember. A big thanks to the organisers. Make sure to check the school Instagram/Facebook to see our dance. Rianne, Maya, Tia and Rosie

This week it is National Youth Sunday and because of Covid-19 we can’t meet and celebrate in our churches as we normally would and so a “Fun Day” was organised for us and streamed on YouTube on Friday 21st November. 12 other students and I went to the chapel for the day with Cleo our chaplain and joined many other schools from the UK to watch and take part. There were many games and activities to get involved with which included learning a dance routine and then writing speeches about why being “Together” is important to us. Whilst writing the speeches we reflected the effect of isolation during this pandemic and how much better it was to be able to be together with our friends and wider family. This day was a fun and brilliant thing to do because Corona Virus kept us all away from each other and it was great to come together and celebrate young people and what is important to us. Curwen Print comes to UAI

As part of the GCSE course in Art, Year 11 students would usually visit the Curwen Print Centre in Cambridgeshire; this year because of the COVID pandemic, the Curwen Print came to the Ursuline Academy, Ilford. The Curwen Studio was founded in London in 1863 and during the 20th and 21st centuries, the Curwen name put its stamp firmly on art history. The studio enjoyed global acclaim for its pioneering work in the world of print under the direction of master printmakers Kip Gresham and Stanley Jones. Stanley met UAI students last year at the studio and kindly gave an inspirational talk.

Patsy and Charlotte, both professional print makers from the Curwen Print Education Centre instructed the students during their two-day sessions in dry point printing. After two very enjoyable and successful days both tutors said how ‘productive' and ‘hard working' the students were during the sessions.

Students equally were equally impressed and said, “I was good to learn and experience an older form of art. We learnt about Chine Colle and it was a memorable experience”- Tanisha

8

“I loved how we elevated our self-portraits and created different forms of it”- Kelvinna “The best part was learning how to create ghost prints and overlays on a printing press.” - Javeriah

“I enjoyed trying to figure out the best way to bring my creativity out and today (Curwen session) definitely helped me be the most creative I can be” -Nishta

“A fun experience, glad we could do it in these weird times. I loved learning to use the printing press” - Colleen

“The tutors from Curwen Print were friendly and nice; I learnt how to use printing ink” - Shackina

“The best part was creating something we can use in our coursework” –Mandy

At the end of two full and productive days, the students had completed many dry point prints that will count towards their GCSE grades.

Despite the COVID pandemic threatening to disrupt learning, UAI and Curwen managed to continue with their long-standing tradition of printmaking. Well done to all concerned.

Mr Butler, Head of Art

Mental Health and Wellbeing in the News “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens and I will give you rest.” Matthew: 11. 28 Although mobile phones are not allowed in our school community, many pupils still have access to their devices in the evenings and weekends. Used properly, mobile phones are wonderful sources of communication and information. However, used incorrectly they can become a source of harm and distress to many who find themselves on the receiving end of on line bullying. It is important to keep a track of your daughters phone activity (this also includes computers and I-pads) to ensure they are being used in a supportive and useful way. How can I deal with online bullying? Bullying is never okay, whether it's at school, at home, or on the internet. If you're being harassed or upset in any way online, reach out for help from someone you trust. You can block and report the people involved, or, if you don’t feel able to block someone, try muting them - they won’t know you’ve muted them and you won’t have to see their posts or messages. You can also use the privacy settings on your social networks to limit what they can see on your profile. See below for tips on how to block, report or mute people on social media. A young minds guest blogger Chloe has shared some ideas on how she coped with online bullying. We live in a world where basically everything is online. You can do almost anything from your smartphone or laptop - we literally have the world in our hands. Unfortunately the world can be an ugly place sometimes and when that ugliness creeps into our online life, it can be even more damaging due to the anonymity and exposure that being on an online platform can bring. When I was 13 years old, my whole life was flipped upside down when I realised people who I thought would be my friends forever had turned against me and started to publicly embarrass me on social media. I was confused, broken, and it was a time of loneliness that I had never experienced before. Rumours were spread about me, comments about me were public for everyone to see, and I lost a lot of ‘friends’ in the process. When I went into school, I had no one, and when I was alone, things were shouted at me from across the playground. This was when my mental health hit an all-time low. I could never just turn off my phone and I couldn’t block them – I needed to see what was being said about me. As sick as that sounds, the anxiety of not knowing was much worse than seeing the lies and mean comments. I was torturing myself. 12

I was confused, broken, and it was a time of loneliness that I had never experienced before. The worst thing I did was bottling it up and trying to deal with it myself.

When I spoke out, I realised that it wasn’t just me that had gone through this, there were thousands of people who had felt the way I did and were in the same position as me. This made me realise I needed to do something about it. I never wanted anyone to feel the way I had. I contacted O2’s GoThinkBig hub, and they helped me create a non-profit organisation called Beat the Bullies. I wanted to teach people how writing down what they are feeling and putting it into a physical form could help them take control. I then realised that I could turn these feelings into songs, and that was when my passion started to bloom. I was travelling the country, going into schools and teaching people how to write songs and how they could use music as a form of therapy. From all of this, I was invited to be part of many campaigns including Stop, Speak, Support, which was headed by Prince William. If you are experiencing online bullying, you need to report it. You may be wondering why I am telling you about my successes. The reason this is because I was once a broken, lonely, severely-depressed young person who felt they had no reason to be alive. It took me almost dying to realise how short and special life truly is. If you are experiencing online bullying, you need to report it. You need to remember that the people who are hurting you might be hurt themselves. You are never alone and your problems are not insignificant. Find something that you love, whether it be music, art, sport or whatever else, and dive into that. Keep yourself distracted – this was one of the most important things for me. When I was distracted, I was able to smile. I want you to remember that there are so many people out there who love and care about you even if you think there aren’t. This period is a blip in your timeline and this pain will go away. You were put on this world for a reason and no one has the right to take that away from you. You are a strong, beautiful person, no matter what anybody says. I know how badly words can hurt, but they are only words and it does not mean they are true. Speak out, find something to fall in love with, and, most importantly, know that you are never alone.
