T The Tillis Hotel, or Tillis House, as it was commonly known, was located on the riverfront at the foot of Hendry Street, near the entrance to the Hendry Street dock. It stood on what is now the northeast corner of Hendry and Bay. At that time, the riverbank lay just beyond what became Bay Street, and plentiful rain or a storm could flood the area. On the photo’s far left, part of the Jackson Street dock is visible in the distance. That location gave the establishment two of its best amenities, a river view and cool breezes. It was a two-story, two-part structure, one side for boarding and one for dining. The hotel’s owners, Mr. and Mrs. JV Tillis, had previous experience in the hotel business, having been managers at the popular Florida House on Main Street. By late 1911, however, they sold the hotel bearing their name to Mrs. HL Heath. It was sold yet again in early 1912, to WB Hingson, who made a few changes, advertising regularly with the promise of “the best meals in town, regardless of price.” In February, he changed the name to the River View Hotel. He also made various improvements and repairs over the next year or so. In early 1915, it changed hands again. PR “Pat” Sullen, a newcomer to town, ran it only about a year and a half before selling out and relocating to Moore Haven. A series of seawalls pushed the riverfront northward over the last century. Today, the former hotel He, too, advertised regularly, mentioning hot and cold baths, the “coolest rooms site is a parking lot. The Hall of Fifty States (center) faces Edwards Drive. photo by Gerri Reaves in town,” and special summer rates. Regular meals were only a quarter. (History note: Sullen’s move to Moore Haven proved fatal, for he was killed there in August 1916. The incident was ruled justifiable homicide.) In 1917, the hotel acquired another proprietor and name, Mrs. AR Jenny’s Caloosa Hotel, which according to the ad, overlooked the “beautiful Caloosahatchee Bay.” The price of meals increased to 35 cents. By the following year, she was operating the Caloosa Dining room and meals increased again – to 40 cents! The 1920s changed the Hendry and Bay area. Bay Street underwent major development, including the extension of the street both east and west, and seawalls that gained ground for downtown. Modern buildings were constructed where wood-frame ones once stood. Today, a parking lot exists on the former riverside hotel site. Walk to Hendry and Bay and imagine checking in at the Tillis Hotel on the banks of the beautiful Caloosahatchee and paying only 25 cents for dinner. Then visit the following research centers to learn more about the countless hotels that housed visitors and boarders in the town’s early history.
