Under Republican administrations during the 1970s and 1980s, working Americans encountered new financial challenges as the lion’s share of economic growth benefitted the wealthiest citizens. As socially and politically conscious popular music faded in popularity, Stevie Wonder continued to express his concerns about the obstacles to the promise of freedom and equality that many Americans continued to face. This paper examines four songs, written and performed by Wonder - “Living for the City,” “You Haven’t Done Nothing,” “Happy Birthday,” and “It’s Wrong,” - to track the trajectory of his commentary from local, community-based issues to national, political topics and, finally, to international causes.

A complete concert by Stevie Wonder from 31 January 1974. It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London, halfway between the release of the classic albums "Innervisions and "Fulfillingness' First Finale" The sound quality is excellent, perhaps only needing a final mix before release, which had been the intention. The nature of the performance is sprawling, meandering and at times unfocused but never less than fascinating. Stevie and his band relax on stage, away from the tight discipline and time schedule of the recording studio. He is accompanied by guitarist Michael Sembello, the rhythm section of Reggie McBride (bass) and Ollie Brown (drums) and Wonderlove's female backing vocalists. The Japanese Journal of American Studies, No. 22 (2011) Stevie Wonder’s Songs in the Key of Life and the “Long Civil Rights Movement” Kevin GAINES* Stevie Wonder’s 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life is an enduring mas- terpiece of popular music that refl ects what U.S. historians have recently called the “long civil rights movement.” That concept, as Jacquelyn Hall and others have argued, challenges the master narrative of a “short” civil rights movement beginning with the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision and ending by the mid-1960s with the passage of federal civil and voting rights legislation. More important, for Hall the “long civil rights movement” is a corrective against distortions of the movement’s meaning and legacy that have developed over the last generation. Perhaps the most common of such distortions is the appropriation of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream of a color-blind America by conservative opponents of civil rights.1 King’s little-remembered words of 1967 are just as relevant for our time as they were when he wrote them: “We must rapidly begin the shift from a ‘thing’– oriented society to a ‘person’–oriented society. When machines and comput- ers, profi t motive and property rights are considered more important than people, the giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism are incapable of being conquered. A civilization can fl ounder as readily in the face of moral and spiritual bankruptcy as it can through fi nancial bankruptcy.”2 Americans often forget that Dr. King was once reviled by a majority of his fellow citizens for his unpopular stand in opposition to the war in Vietnam and his advocacy of economic justice.3 Copyright © 2011 Kevin Gaines.
