"World Music" and "World Beat" Designations Brad Klump
Document généré le 26 sept. 2021 17:23 Canadian University Music Review Revue de musique des universités canadiennes Origins and Distinctions of the "World Music" and "World Beat" Designations Brad Klump Canadian Perspectives in Ethnomusicology Résumé de l'article Perspectives canadiennes en ethnomusicologie This article traces the origins and uses of the musical classifications "world Volume 19, numéro 2, 1999 music" and "world beat." The term "world beat" was first used by the musician and DJ Dan Del Santo in 1983 for his syncretic hybrids of American R&B, URI : https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1014442ar Afrobeat, and Latin popular styles. In contrast, the term "world music" was DOI : https://doi.org/10.7202/1014442ar coined independently by at least three different groups: European jazz critics (ca. 1963), American ethnomusicologists (1965), and British record companies (1987). Applications range from the musical fusions between jazz and Aller au sommaire du numéro non-Western musics to a marketing category used to sell almost any music outside the Western mainstream. Reference Guide
Reference Guide The Nursery Rhodos in bloom 04/10/10 Mom and Dad WinterberryWinter 2010 circa 2006 ‘m oonbeam’ Summer 2010 Twist-N-Shoutfall 2010 Dedication The Spring of 2011 will bring change to the front office of Four Seasons Nursery and Landscape Company. After 22 year of service, Charlyn Mair, a.k.a. Charlie, will be retiring for greener pastures. She and her husband Greg will be moving to Alabama to be closer to her daughter and granddaughter. Charlie was hired back in 1988 and saved from a life of slingin hash, which we kid her about to this day. Although she was green as a fresh cut tree, Charlie somehow, someway adapted to the conditions of working in a male dominated company. She became tough as nails while still maintaining her character and charm. Charlie has become so intertwined with the inner workings of Four Seasons Nursery that it’s hard to imagine her not being here. How do you replace an employee that you can not only entrust your business, but entrust your own kids to? The executives won’t admit it, but replacing Charlie is a task they never wanted to be faced with. A dedication of neither a book nor all the accolades in the world can express the appreciation Four Seasons Nursery has for Charlie. She will be dearly missed, but thankfully only a phone call away. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your dedication, honesty, sense of humor, and most importantly for being you. We love you like a sister, an aunt and a mother and wish you the best of luck in your new endeavors. -
Chapter 2 Music in the United States Before the Great Depression
American Music in the 20th Century 6 Chapter 2 Music in the United States Before the Great Depression Background: The United States in 1900-1929 In 1920 in the US - Average annual income = $1,100 - Average purchase price of a house = $4,000 - A year's tuition at Harvard University = $200 - Average price of a car = $600 - A gallon of gas = 20 cents - A loaf of Bread = 20 cents Between 1900 and the October 1929 stock market crash that triggered the Great Depression, the United States population grew By 47 million citizens (from 76 million to 123 million). Guided by the vision of presidents Theodore Roosevelt1 and William Taft,2 the US 1) began exerting greater political influence in North America and the Caribbean.3 2) completed the Panama Canal4—making it much faster and cheaper to ship its goods around the world. 3) entered its "Progressive Era" by a) passing anti-trust laws to Break up corporate monopolies, b) abolishing child labor in favor of federally-funded puBlic education, and c) initiating the first federal oversight of food and drug quality. 4) grew to 48 states coast-to-coast (1912). 5) ratified the 16th Amendment—estaBlishing a federal income tax (1913). In addition, by 1901, the Lucas brothers had developed a reliaBle process to extract crude oil from underground, which soon massively increased the worldwide supply of oil while significantly lowering its price. This turned the US into the leader of the new energy technology for the next 60 years, and opened the possibility for numerous new oil-reliant inventions. -

Floating: ruminations from the open-air abyss Item Type Thesis Authors Nyberg, Brandi Jo Petronio Download date 25/09/2021 13:20:45 Link to Item http://hdl.handle.net/11122/10523 FLOATING: RUMINATIONS FROM THE OPEN-AIR ABYSS By Brandi Jo Petronio Nyberg, B.S. A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing: Nonfiction University of Alaska Fairbanks May 2019 APPROVED: Daryl Farmer, Ph.D., Committee Chair Frank Soos, M.F.A., Committee Member Jennifer Schell, Ph.D., Committee Member Rich Carr, Ph.D., Chair Department of English Todd Sherman, M.F.A., Dean College of Liberal Arts Michael Castellini, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School Abstract This thesis is a collection of environmentally centered personal essays, some of which are also research driven. Many of the essays within are place-based and several reflect on what the word ‘home' means. The research-driven essays involved conducting literature reviews within academic journals and, in some cases, weaving that information with personal narrative. Throughout the thesis, there is a loose narrative arc that follows the author's nomadic wanderings and search for home. Although a home is never quite found, the author does find a deeper meaning on what it means to call a place ‘home.' While the order of essays jumps from one place to the next geographically, they are ordered in a chronological sense - although not completely. Throughout the collection, the author is in direct conversation with many writers who have inspired her own writing, including Edward Abbey, Henry Thoreau, Barry Lopez, and Terry Tempest Williams. -

The Artist Alive: Explorations in Music, Art & Theology, by Christopher Pramuk (Winona, MN: Anselm Academic, 2019). Copyright © 2019 by Christopher Pramuk. All rights reserved. www.anselmacademic.org. Introduction Seeds of Awareness This book is inspired by an undergraduate course called “Music, Art, and Theology,” one of the most popular classes I teach and probably the course I’ve most enjoyed teaching. The reasons for this may be as straightforward as they are worthy of lament. In an era when study of the arts has become a practical afterthought, a “luxury” squeezed out of tight education budgets and shrinking liberal arts curricula, people intuitively yearn for spaces where they can explore together the landscape of the human heart opened up by music and, more generally, the arts. All kinds of people are attracted to the arts, but I have found that young adults especially, seeking something deeper and more worthy of their questions than what they find in highly quantitative and STEM-oriented curricula, are drawn into the horizon of the ineffable where the arts take us. Across some twenty-five years in the classroom, over and over again it has been my experience that young people of diverse religious, racial, and economic backgrounds, when given the opportunity, are eager to plumb the wellsprings of spirit where art commingles with the divine-human drama of faith. From my childhood to the present day, my own spirituality1 or way of being in the world has been profoundly shaped by music, not least its capacity to carry me beyond myself and into communion with the mysterious, transcendent dimension of reality. -
