PEN (Organization): An Inventory of Its Records at the Harry Ransom Center Descriptive Summary Creator: PEN (Organization) Title: PEN (Organization) Records Dates: 1912-2008 (bulk 1926-1997) Extent: 352 document boxes, 5 card boxes (cb), 5 oversize boxes (osb) (153.29 linear feet), 4 oversize folders (osf) Abstract: The records of the London-based writers' organizations English PEN and PEN International, founded by Catharine Amy Dawson Scott in 1921, contain extensive correspondence with writer-members and other PEN centres around the world. Their records document campaigns, international congresses and other meetings, committees, finances, lectures and other programs, literary prizes awarded, membership, publications, and social events over several decades. Call Number: Manuscript Collection MS-03133 Language: The records are primarily written in English with sizeable amounts in French, German, and Spanish, and lesser amounts in numerous other languages. Non-English items are sometimes accompanied by translations. Note: The Ransom Center gratefully acknowledges the assistance of the National Endowment for the Humanities, which provided funds for the preservation, cataloging, and selective digitization of this collection. The PEN Digital Collection contains 3,500 images of newsletters, minutes, reports, scrapbooks, and ephemera selected from the PEN Records. An additional 900 images selected from the PEN Records and related Ransom Center collections now form five PEN Teaching Guides that highlight PEN's interactions with major political and historical trends across the twentieth century, exploring the organization's negotiation with questions surrounding free speech, political displacement, and human rights, and with global conflicts like World War II and the Cold War. L'italia E L'eurovision Song Contest Un Rinnovato
La musica unisce l'Europa… e non solo C'è chi la definisce "La Champions League" della musica e in fondo non sbaglia. L'Eurovision è una grande festa, ma soprattutto è un concorso in cui i Paesi d'Europa si sfidano a colpi di note. Tecnicamente, è un concorso fra televisioni, visto che ad organizzarlo è l'EBU (European Broadcasting Union), l'ente che riunisce le tv pubbliche d'Europa e del bacino del Mediterraneo. Noi italiani l'abbiamo a lungo chiamato Eurofestival, i francesi sciovinisti lo chiamano Concours Eurovision de la Chanson, l'abbreviazione per tutti è Eurovision. Oggi più che mai una rassegna globale, che vede protagonisti nel 2016 43 paesi: 42 aderenti all'ente organizzatore più l'Australia, che dell'EBU è solo membro associato, essendo fuori dall'area (l’anno scorso fu invitata dall’EBU per festeggiare i 60 anni del concorso per via dei grandi ascolti che la rassegna fa in quel paese e che quest’anno è stata nuovamente invitata dall’organizzazione). L'ideatore della rassegna fu un italiano: Sergio Pugliese, nel 1956 direttore della RAI, che ispirandosi a Sanremo volle creare una rassegna musicale europea. La propose a Marcel Bezençon, il franco-svizzero allora direttore generale del neonato consorzio eurovisione, che mise il sigillo sull'idea: ecco così nascere un concorso di musica con lo scopo nobile di promuovere la collaborazione e l'amicizia tra i popoli europei, la ricostituzione di un continente dilaniato dalla guerra attraverso lo spettacolo e la tv. E oltre a questo, molto più prosaicamente, anche sperimentare una diretta in simultanea in più Paesi e promuovere il mezzo televisivo nel vecchio continente. -

Surgido para escolher uma canção portuguesa para concorrer no Festival Eurovisão da Canção, o festival português tornou-se uma plataforma para o descobrimento e reconhecimento de diversos artistas, além de apresentar canções que hoje são vistas como verdadeiras expressões da alma portuguesa. Mesmo Portugal nunca tendo vencido o Eurovisão, o Festival RTP da Canção continua a ser realizado como uma forma de celebração da música portuguesa e de erguer os ânimos da produção musical em nível nacional. Palavras-chave: Festival RTP da Canção; Festival Eurovisão da Canção; Música Portuguesa. Abstract: In 2014, the RTP Song Festival reaches its fiftieth anniversary. Arisen to choose a Portuguese song to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest, the Portuguese festival has become a platform for the discovery and recognition of several artists, as well as to present songs that are seen today as a true expression of the Portuguese soul. Although Portugal has never won the Eurovision, the RTP Song Festival continues to be held as a way to celebrate the Portuguese music and to raise the spirits of music production at national level. This led to his becoming the Near East correspondent for the Ullstein newspapers of Berlin. Future assign ments included the Graf Zepplin's flight over the Arctic in 1931 and the Civil War in Spain, where he was im prisoned, sentenced to death, and finally pardoned by the rebels. An active communist from 1931 to 1938, Koestler achieved world fame with DARKNESS AT NooN ( 1941), his explosive anti-communist novel. He now lives in England.
