Photographing on the move in foreign countries requires the combination of technical expertise, culture competence, intuitive awareness, curiosity and a dash of panache. Nevada Wier, a specialist in travel photography, will discuss how to combine technical, practical, and creative aspects of travel photography in order to get an image that elevates itself above the usual travel clichés. Nevada discusses ways to approach and creatively photograph people, cross- cultural considerations in foreign countries, using natural light, fill-flash, tips on equipment, and digital concerns in the field.

As I was entering the Annual Competition results into the FanFare, I noticed that many photos were taken outside the United States. Many of our photographers have traveled to Japan, Turkey, India, the Galapagos Islands, the Midway Atoll, Africa, Antarctica, Madagascar, Finland, Pakistan, Vietnam, Italy, Guatemala, Bhutan, Spain, Peru, China, Morocco, France, Thailand, Greece, and Laos! There are also many, many photos from around the US as well. I’m impressed and also very jealous! I would love it if some of you would be willing to write a Travelogue of your travels, both near and far and include some photos as well. So far, we have had Travelogues from Spain and Cuba that were very interesting and inspiring. Anyone else? Let me know … just email me at [email protected] and I’ll put your story and photos in.

Photographing Other People’s Art Mark Pemberton The Digital Curmudgeon

We’ve all done it. Either walking down the street or in a museum, you see a statue or painting, whip out your camera and take a picture of it. It’s the most natural thing in the world. You want to remember it and share it with others as a way of documenting where you were. After all, who would travel all the way to Italy, view Michelangelo’s statue of David and not take a photo of it. But is the photo art? There are many good and valid reasons to photograph other people’s art (OPA). Travel photography is largely composed of OPA. Documenting works of art is a valid journalistic endeavor. In many cases, such as that mentioned above, the picture is a record photo documenting where the photographer went and what he saw. All excellent reasons to photograph someone else’s work. In the past year or so I have seen, what I believe to be, an increase in the number of images entered into Club and N4C competition which are examples of OPA. I’m not talking about Travel or Journalism where such entries would be appropriate but in Pictorial. According to the N4C guidelines “Pictorial photography is the use of the photographic medium as an art form.” (my emphasis) Furthermore, the N4C Preamble states “By virtue of submitting an entry, the photographer certifies the work as his/her own.” According to the rules, entries submitted to Pictorial should be the original, creative art work of the photographer. By way of example, examine the following photograph from the Sistine Chapel. Clearly in this case it would be absurd to submit this image into Pictorial completion. The photographer has done nothing but document one of Michelangelo’s most famous works. Nothing unique or creative has been added. A documentary photo of someone else’s art isn't art. I think that we would all agree that this image should not be entered into a Pictorial competition. But there are other examples that may not be as easily decided. Take for example, another shot of the Sistine Chapel. Clearly this is also a photo of other people’s art. However, there are compositional aspects of this photo that allow the photographer to interpret what he sees. The photographer has composed the image and used multiple leading lines to draw the eye into the Chapel. The perspective also draws upon the circular patterns on the floor to add interest. Although it may be more appropriate as a Travel image, it goes beyond a simple documentation of someone else’s art. What about this piece of “Street Art”? I shot this image in the Marin headlands at one of the old, abandoned army buildings. Although the artist has not quite yet achieved the stature of Michelangelo, the situation is exactly that same as that above. The shot is merely documentation of OPA. I’ll leave it to the reader to categorize this image from the Alabama Hills. It is possible to include other people’s art and use the final result in competition. However it requires the photographer to add their own creative mark to the image. Compare these two images of the Lincoln Memorial. The first image is, once again, simply a photograph of other people’s art, in this case Daniel Chester French’s. Even if you try to shoot the statue at interesting angles, you are only documenting what someone else created. January 2012 Page 15 of 18

This second image is completely different. By capturing the silhouettes of the school children staring up at the statue a unique image is created. It is almost as if the children and Lincoln are communicating across the ages. How about the following 3 images? This first image is of a perfume bottle that I bought in Italy. The image is well lit and the bottle itself is very beautiful but I have added no degree of creativity of my own. I have merely illustrated the beauty captured by the glass blower. Good for a catalog but not for competition. In this second image I focused on some of the macro details of the bottle. The goal was to create an abstract image that relied upon the interplay of color, shapes and curved lines. However, I realized that even though my perspective changed dramatically, and I liked the result, I was still only recording what the original artist created. The impact of the image has changed but is zooming in on an object really enough to convert it to an original work of art? 1 For the third image I used a piece of black acrylic to create a reflection of the bottle to add a creative element of my own. The reflection adds a new dimensionality and symmetry to the image. This small change has moved the image from OPA to original art. I will include one more example of how to avoid the OPA syndrome. This statue of a soldier was photographed in Washington DC at the Korean War memorial. The expression on the face of the soldier shows weariness and perhaps a bit of desperation. I zoomed in close on the statue to capture the head and shoulders to enhance the facial expressions. However, once again, nothing has been added to the photo that the sculptor did not create. This is a fine shot for my vacation album for not for Pictorial competition. I returned to the Korean War Memorial that night. The somber mood of the memorial was accentuated by the darkness. I then noticed the lit American flag flapping slowly in the wind. I mounted my camera on a tripod and using a slow shutter speed to blur the flag I juxtaposed the flag behind the sculpture to create a powerful and moving image that was all my own.

Conclusion When creating images for Pictorial Competition it is essential that the photographer produce an original work of art that draws upon composition, color, contrast, and tonality to create an image of impact. It is possible to include other people’s art in your photo. However, if you do, make sure that the photo is about more than the included art. Give the image your creative touch and interpretation and perspective.

Footnote: 1 Please note an important distinction between “created art” and “found art”. Zooming in on the details of a work of art created by January 2012 Page 16 of 18 another artist (created art) does not constitute creativity or originality on the part of the photographer. However, discovering interesting patterns in nature requires a careful, observant eye. Sometimes showing only a part of a “found” object produces a surprising or unique image.
