The activities available aim to support and add value to the information, advice and guidance work being carried out every day in schools and colleges. This publication provides an overview of the wide range of opportunities we offer, including assemblies and presentations (which can be delivered face to face or online), College tours and subject tasters. The guide also contains information about the support we offer at Hugh Baird College as well as highlighting the exciting progression to Higher Education provided by our University Centre. Our work with schools and colleges is designed to assist careers advisors and help students and their key influencers navigate their way through the, sometimes challenging, education landscape. Our activities are delivered at Hugh Baird College, in schools/colleges, or virtually. They are designed to be interactive and enjoyable with lots of opportunities to meet with current students and academic staff. AN INTRODUCTION TO COLLEGE LIFE Session length: 10-15 mins Can be delivered virtually: Yes GATSBY BENCHMARK 1 & 3 Suitable for all year groups The Introduction to College Life session offers students a taste of what life at Hugh Baird College is like, featuring an overview of the post-16 options, facilities, support and additional opportunities available to them. The 10-15 minute presentation covers topics such as; how you can study, courses available from September, trips and enrichment activities and Open Evening information. The College has a huge amount to offer students but not every group of students have the same interests or aspirations, so we will tailor our talks or presentations to suit any audience, age and can be delivered online or face to face.

WHAT ARE T LEVELS AND WHERE CAN THEY TAKE ME? Session length: 30 mins Can be delivered virtually: Yes GATSBY BENCHMARK 1 & 3 Suitable for groups of Y10 & Y11 students From September, T-levels will be a brand new option available for School Leavers to study within the Healthcare, Construction and Digital subject areas. This session focuses on introducing students to T-levels as well as informing them of the options available to them at the College. The sessions can be delivered by T-level leads to answer any questions students may have and help gain a better understanding if T-levels are right for them.

DISCOVERING A-LEVELS Session length: 30 mins Can be delivered virtually: Yes GATSBY BENCHMARK 1 & 3 Suitable for Y10 & Y11 students A-levels are highly valued by employers and universities, they can open up lots of doors to further study and careers. At Hugh Baird College, we offer 32 subjects based at our dedicated Sixth Form Centre, the South Sefton Campus. The Discovering A-levels session provides an in-depth look into what studying A-levels could be like for your students, the subjects available, how they study and how to apply.

Vocational qualifications and Apprenticeships are designed to acquire knowledge and skills that meet recognised standards necessary to perform a particular job. Discover how Apprenticeships work and the difference between studying a Vocational pathway vs an Apprenticeship pathway. Courses at the College range from Level 1 to Level 3, meaning that there is an option available for everyone.

STAYING LOCAL VS MOVING AWAY Session length: 30 mins Can be delivered virtually: Yes GATSBY BENCHMARK 7 Suitable for Y12 & Y13 students Undergraduates are increasingly recognising the benefits of staying closer to home and continuing their education locally, making the best progression into their working lives without running up debts through accommodation and living costs. In this session, we will cover the benefits of moving away to study vs the advantages of staying local and accessing some of the best degree qualifications in an affordable way, around existing family and work commitments.

Workshop content includes: ● The importance of personal statements. ● Examples of what makes a good/bad personal statement. ● Participants will be given a framework for writing their own statement. ● Students will be able to understand the process of applying through UCAS, identify key strengths, skills and experiences to include in a personal statement and produce a suitable personal statement to support course choices and enable them to gain the place they want.

GATSBY BENCHMARK 5,6 & 7 FULL COLLEGE TOURS: Tours of the whole of Hugh Baird College are great for pupils who are still undecided about their choices, or for those who are keen to get a clear idea of what a Further Education College looks and feels like. Full college tours take in a wide variety of workshops, studios and other facilities, as well as Hugh Baird College’s student services and communal areas. This is a great way to see the bigger picture and to help young people narrow down their options.

The chance to visit the course areas and meet the tutors they will work with can offer pupils a great boost, showing them a glimpse of their future and motivating them to achieve their goals in school.

TASTER SESSIONS Taster sessions are a great way for students to really get a feel for college life and to help them make some important decisions about how they might spend the next few years. Hugh Baird College lecturers will lead structured sessions which are designed to allow your pupils to dip their toe in the water of college life.

FACULTY DISCOVER DAY Session length: 1 day Can be delivered virtually: No GATSBY BENCHMARK 1,3,4,7 & 8 Suitable for groups of 10-20 Y12 & Y13 students During a Faculty Discover Day students will experience first-hand what it is like to study at University and courses available to them. These will be organised by the Faculty subject area, and you can see a list of these on page 22. They will be given the opportunity to find out about specific courses, undertake a sample lecture and other activities. The Faculty Discover Day may also include a tour of the campus, finding out about student life and meeting current students from a specific subject area. Students will be able to develop a practical understanding of a HE subject area, develop knowledge of the range of courses available within a subject area, make informed decisions, recognising that choices should be related to career aspirations and personal strengths.

ACCESS TO A-LEVELS PROGRAMME This programme is designed for those who want to study A-levels but have narrowly missed out on the entry requirements. This programme will allow students to choose 4 of the GCSE courses on offer, with a view to progressing onto an A-level programme after 1 year. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS • A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English Language and Maths. • You must be 16 years old Please note: Students who have not achieved a grade 4 in English Language and/or Maths must re-sit these subjects.

WHERE TO NEXT? It is anticipated that those who successfully complete this programme will progress on to a two year A-level study programme.

How you study can vary from apprenticeship to apprenticeship. Some require you to attend College one day a week, others entail ongoing assessment in the workplace. Apprenticeships at Hugh Baird College are available at Intermediate, Advanced and Levels 4 and 5.

Introducing Tlevels at Hugh Baird College The Government has chosen Hugh Baird College as the only education provider in the Liverpool City Region to pilot the delivery of new ‘revolutionary’ technical qualifications called T-levels. What are Tlevels T-levels are a new type of qualification that focuses on high-level technical

alternative to A-levels and will provide young people with a clear route to skilled employment, as well as progression to higher or degree apprenticeships, or degree-level study at university. T-levels will combine the career focus and practical elements of current technical and professional qualifications like BTECs and NVQs with the theory and study of traditional A-levels. Why have Tlevels been developed T-levels have been created to provide a highly credible vocational alternative to A-levels. They will ensure that young people have learnt the skills they need to start a job after College and have a firm base to progress in their career or on to higher level study. Employers from a range of sectors need the competencies and attributes that will be taught on T-level courses, so students who complete this qualification will be in high demand for some of the best jobs. Industrybased placements A core component of the T-level qualification is an industry-based placement. We work closely with Sefton Special Educational Needs Schools to provide the best possible place for students who need extra help and support, using our specialist facilities, expert approach and caring attitude. We build on prior learning and provide a progression route to help students develop the skills necessary to achieve their individual potential. Thornton College holds the ‘Makaton Friendly’ status. We have invested heavily in our campus and are continually improving the facilities and resources available to our undergraduates, offering a place to study, relax or socialise. It includes an open plan study area, library and learning centre, cafe with outdoor seating area and a versatile performance and events space.
