May it be Your will that I may sin no more לא ע"י יסורין ,and as for the sins I have committed before You והיינו וידויא דרבא כולה שתא ודרב erase them in Your compassion, but not by המנונא זוטא ביומא דכפורי suffering.” This is the confession that Rava used all year, and Rav Hamnuna Zuta on Yom Kippur. אמר מר זוטרא לא אמרן אלא דלא אמר Mar Zutra said: We said these only if one did not אבל אנחנו חטאנו אבל אמר אבל אנחנו say “But we have sinned.” However, if one said חטאנו תו לא צריך .But we have sinned” one needs nothing further" דאמר בר המדודי הוה קאימנא קמיה As Bar Hamdudei said: I was standing before דשמואל והוה יתיב וכי מטא שליחא Shmuel and he was sitting; and when the prayer דצבורא ואמר אבל אנחנו חטאנו קם leader reached the words: “But we have sinned” he stood. Psalm 106:6 חָ טָ ֥ א נ וּ עִ ם-אֲ בוֹתֵ ֗ינוּ הֶעֱוִ ֥ינוּ הִרְשָֽׁ עְ נוּ: We, like our ancestors, have sinned; we have gone astray, done evil. 1b. Commentaries from Mahzor Lev Shalem • Every human being is imperfect. Even previous generations—whom we may idealize— contained sinners. As the Rabbis taught: no one has walked the earth and not sinned. • Some medieval commentators note that there is a measure of solace in remembering that our ancestors were imperfect but they were forgiven. Others object to the mention that our ancestors sinned, and so in some editions that phrase is omitted. • Nehemiah reports that in rededicating themselves, the people gathered in the Temple courtyard and ‘confessed their own sins and the sins of their ancestors’ (Nehemiah 9:2). Medieval authors argued that knowledge that previous generations sinned, just as we do, empowers us to ask for forgiveness—for is not our own failing part of the very nature of the human condition? 2.     ONEIROCRITICS AND MIDRASH On Reading Dreams and the Scripture Erik Alvstad A bstr act In the context of ancient theories of dreams and their interpretation, the rabbinic literature offers particularly interesting loci. Even though the view on the nature of dreams is far from un- ambiguous, the rabbinic tradition of oneirocritics, i.e. the discourse on how dreams are interpreted, stands out as highly original. As has been shown in earlier research, oneirocritics resembles scriptural interpretation, midrash, to which it has lent some of its exegetical rules. This article will primarily investigate the interpreter’s role in the rabbinic practice of dream interpretation, as reflected in a few rabbinic stories from the two Talmuds and from midrashim. It is shown that these narrative examples have some common themes. They all illustrate the polysemy of the dream-text, and how the person who puts an interpretation on it constructs the dream’s significance. Most of the stories also emphasize that the outcome of the dream is postponed until triggered by its interpretation. Thus the dreams are, in a sense, pictured as prophetic – but it is rather the interpreter that constitutes the prophetic instance, not the dream itself.     On Telling the Truth and Avoiding Deception Rabbi Daniel S Alexander Rosh Hashanah Day II During the recent series of commemorations following the death of Senator John McCain, I relished reviewing the scene from that town hall meeting in Lakeville, MN back in October of 2008. It was a period when racist conspiracies about then Senator Obama were being circulated in some social media outlets. In the now famous scene, a woman wearing a red, McCain-Palin tee shirt takes the microphone and begins, “I can’t trust Obama. I have read about him, and he’s not, um, um….” At this point, McCain begins to nod his head up and down in apparent enjoyment of the support. The woman continues, “… he’s an Arab.” Without a moment’s hesitation, McCain removes the microphone from his erstwhile supporter and interjects: “No, ma’am. He’s a decent family man [and a] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what the campaign’s all about. He’s not [an Arab].” In that swift microphone removal and that unconsidered “No, ma’am …” McCain acted on what could only have been an instinct for integrity, a reflex to avoid deception and to speak truth. The rabbinic sages of our Jewish tradition have much to say about speaking truth and avoiding deception. Sometimes they teach in the language of law and sometimes in the language of story. Altogether, they present us with useful touchstones for a consideration of this timely topic, timely both as it pertains to the serious challenge posed ever more relentlessly in the contemporary political discourse to which we have been subjected in recent months and also because of the imperative on these Days of Awe to engage in a serious process of self judgment and self correction.

Up until this point, they lived relatively isolated in the country, unaffected and unaware of the existence of world Jewry. Following this period and especially from the beginning of the twentieth century, the attention of certain Jewish individuals and organisations was drawn to the Falashas. This contact initiated a period of external interference which would ultimately transform the Falashas, an Ethiopian phenomenon, into Ethiopian Jews, whose culture, religion and identity became increasingly connected with that of world Jewry. It is the purpose of this thesis to examine the external influences that implemented and continued the process of transformation in Falasha society which culminated in their eventual emigration to Israel.

Is that to say that Rava holds in accordance with the opinion of Rabbi Yehuda, that on Shabbat it is prohibited to move food that was originally designated for human consumption and is now only suited for animal consumption? Didn’t Rava say to his attendant on a Festival: Roast a duck for me, and throw its intestines to the cat.

    Wage Theft and Consumer Boycotts -למען נחדל מעשק ידינו Morris Panitz, Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies Introduction: The Consumer Boycott as a Resistance Strategy Consumer boycotts are a resistance strategy that draws heavily on the foundational principles of civil disobedience.1 An individual engaged in an act of civil disobedience “seeks not only to convey her disavowal and condemnation of a certain law or policy, but also to draw public attention to this particular issue and thereby to instigate a change in law or policy.”2 The public sphere serves as the ideal forum for civil disobedience for two reasons. First, the target of the direct action is forced to confront the issue under the scrutiny of the public eye, thereby raising the stakes for how the issue is dealt with. Ideally, the public will hold the target accountable for its response to the act of civil disobedience. Second, the calculation on the part of the target of whether or not to meet the demands of the protestors is partially determined by the following generated by the act of civil disobedience. Thus, the public sphere helps attract further support to instigate a change in law or policy.     Sermon: Parshat Tzav & Shabbat HaGadol ערב פסח תשפ"א / March 27, 2021 Rabbi Mitchell Berkowitz B’nai Israel Congregation Rabba and Rabbi Zeira wanted to get together for a celebratory Purim feast. Following the talmudic dictum of ad d’lo yada, drinking until one cannot distinguish between Blessed Mordecai and Cursed Haman, Rabba and Rabbi Zeira drank too much. In their drunken stupor, Rabba killed Rabbi Zeira. Waking up the next day and realizing this grave mistake, Rabba prayed to God, and Rabbi Zeira was miraculously revived.1 It was a Purim miracle! Why am I telling a story about Purim on this eve of Passover? Two reasons. First of all, the events of the Purim story actually take place during the Pesach season. We celebrate Purim on the 14th of Adar, the date when the Jews of Persia were to be slaughtered, but instead were saved. But the narrative itself takes place during Nisan, even during Passover. Beyond the calendrical association, there is also the theme of miracles. Many of our holidays encompass the celebration of miraculous events: the oil on Hannukah, the saving of the Persian Jews on Purim, the plagues and the splitting of the Sea of Reeds on Passover. Miraculous events remind us that God’s metaphorical hand is at work in this world, and thereby stir within us a deeper sense of trust and faith in God. Let us turn to a different Passover miracle. According to Rabbi Ya’akov ben Asher, the author of the Arba’ah Turim, a great miracle happened for our ancestors in ancient Egypt shortly before the exodus.2 In the Torah, the Israelites were instructed to take a goat into their homes on the 10th day of Nisan, which coincided with Shabbat that year.
