30 Days Together “Immanuel – God With Us” #30daystogether Day #14 – Dec. 9 Text: Isaiah 52:5-11 “And now what do I have here?” declares the LORD. “For my people have been taken away for nothing, and those who rule them mock,” declares the LORD. “And all day long My name is constantly blasphemed. Therefore My people will know My name; therefore in that day they will know that it is I who foretold it. Yes, it is I.” How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Listen! Your watchmen lift up their voices; together they shout for joy. When the LORD returns to Zion, they will see it with their own eyes. Burst into songs of joy together, you ruins of Jerusalem, for the LORD has comforted His people, He has redeemed Jerusalem. The LORD will lay bare His holy arm in the sight of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God. Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing! 1 Key words: Isaiah 53 Suffering, servant, sorrows, despised, rejected SUFFERING SAVIOR CHAPTER ISAIAH 53:1-12 Isaiah 53 is HIStory – His Story - the story of the Messiah’s sufferings pre-written. It is prophecy about the purpose of Messiah’s coming into the world. His coming had been preceded by hundreds of years of prophecies. Those prophecies declared where and how He would be born, how He would live, and how He would die. There are at least 300 of these prophecies. And one of the most powerful of these prophetic passages of Scripture is chapter Isaiah 53. Isaiah is often called the “Messianic” prophet because so much of his book was dedicated to giving detailed information about the coming Messiah. David Baron wrote a Christian classic book on Isaiah 53 titled Servant of Jehovah. In it he said, “Isaiah 53 is the most central and the loftiest thing that Old Testament prophecy has ever achieved. Isaiah 53 has supplied more texts for the Gospel preacher than any other portion of the Old Testament.” (David Baron,1857-1926, was a Jewish convert to Christianity. The author of numerous books and periodicals, he was a leader in the Messianic Jewish and Hebrew Christian movements in Europe.) What John chapter 3 is to the Gospel of John, Isaiah chapter 53 is to the book of Isaiah. In fact, the book of Isaiah has been called the Gospel of Isaiah. Martin Luther said that every Christian ought to be able to repeat it by heart. As we come to consider the verses before us, we must go back to chapter 52 to begin. -

Bible Study Guide PASTORATE October 24, 2012 Daily Office Lectionary Readings Psalm 91; Isaiah 53:4–12; Hebrews 4:12–16; Mark 10:35–45 Background and Context God is majestically presented throughout Isaiah 40—55 in contrast to the human-made gods of Babylon, the nation who had defeated and enslaved Israel. These chapters are meant to comfort Israel during this time, ultimately with the promise that God will rescue them from exile when God returns to Zion as king (52:1–12). The unexpected surprise is that this will be accomplished through the work of the servant of the Lord (52:13—53:12); his suffering and shameful death will be the means by which, somehow, Israel is rescued, the covenant is renewed (54), and creation is restored (55). Our passage (53:4–12) is the latter portion of the Fourth Servant Song in Isaiah, which begins at 52:13 with “Look, my servant will succeed! He will be elevated, lifted high, and greatly exalted.” This passage is well known due to the fact that New Testament writers depict the life and ministry of Jesus in terms of the suffering servant (e.g., Matt 8:17; Luke 22:37; John 12:38; Acts 8:32–33; 1 Pet 2:21–25). In Isaiah, the suffering servant is both a reference to Israel and to one who stands in for Israel, doing for the people through his suffering what they cannot do for themselves. Heinemann Lecturer in Practical Theology German Theological Seminary, Giessen, West Germany "Extraordinary" is the word for Psalm 22. The craftsmanship of its poetry, the boldness of its images, and the sweep of its historical scope all contribute to this impression. But the most striking thing about Psalm 22 is its messianic character. God inspired David to write in such a way that certain aspects of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ were clearly prefigured: His perplexed cry, "My God, my God"1 (v. 1; see Mark 15:34), the mockings of the onlookers (Ps. 22:6-8; see Matt. 27:39-43), the piercing of His hands and feet (Ps. 22:16, see John 20:24-27), and the casting of lots for His garments (Ps. 22:18; see John 19:24). The fact that the writer to the Hebrews quoted Psalm 22:22 in Hebrews 2:12 as the words of Jesus certainly validates the view that the psalm is messianic. In the course of studying the psalm, the messianic aspect must be kept in mind. A number of intriguing questions arise. What experi- ences was David describing? In what ways do his descriptions go be- yond his own experience, if any? Did he knowingly prophesy? But in seeking to answer these questions, it is important to note that the psalm has a message in itself for both the readers of that day and those of the present. -

THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY ISAIAH 52:13-54:17 It was Martin Luther who rightly wrote, “If you want to understand the Christian message you must start with the wounds of Christ.” The cross of Jesus is the crux of Christianity. In fact, the term crux is from crucifixion. And outside of the four Christian Gospels there is no clearer account of Messiah’s crucifixion than Isaiah 53. Realize the Hebrew prophet Isaiah was writing 700 years in advance of Calvary - 200 years before crucifixion was invented by the Persians - and 500 years before it was employed by Rome. Yet Isaiah paints an amazingly vivid and detailed prophetic account of all that Jesus endured to take away our sin. !1 To read this chapter with a dry eye is an indication of a cold heart. Isaiah 53 is some emotional footage. In fact, this passage from the Jewish Scriptures is so obviously and authoritatively Christian in its message, later Jews conspired to eliminate it from their Bibles. Ashkenazi, or European Jews, omitted Chapter 53 from their editions of Isaiah. Sephardic, or Oriental Jews, retained it, but tried to explain it away by relating it to the nation Israel rather than a personal Messiah. Yet God refuses to let His people ignore Isaiah’s testimony. Today, in the Givat Ram neighborhood of Jerusalem - at the heart of the city and the modern state - across the street from the Israeli Knesset - there is a unique building known as The Shrine of the Book. !2 It stands as part of the Israeli Museum. -

The Psalms Psalm 22 My God, my God 17 February 2019 Kirsty Ross Isaiah 52: 13; 53: 3–end Matthew 27: 45–54 Those of you who know me or have seen me outside of these Chapel walls won’t have failed to realise that I have two young children. Both of my children have been born here and my eldest, William, who is now three, took his first steps here, was baptised here, and spoke his first words here. Now, I wish I could tell you that William’s first words were something profound or even vaguely religious, as would befit the firstborn of two priests, but the sad reality is that his first word was ‘dat’, which translated from toddler into normal English is ‘fire alarm’. Anyone who has ever lived within the College will know the joys of the weekly call point testing, the 7.00 am fire drills, and the full-scale evacuations that occur whenever someone so much as waves a piece of bread in the direction of a toaster. Whether you are a Fellow sipping tea in the Parlour, a student enjoying breakfast in the Hall, or a six-month-old baby warm in your bed, fire alarms are all part of our shared college experience. As William proved with his first word, the language we use gives important insight into a person’s background and formation. In the second of tonight’s readings, Jesus gives us a glimpse into the culture in which he was formed when he utters, not his first, but his final words from the cross: ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me’. -

THEME AND GENRE IN 4Q177 AND ITS SCRIPTURAL SELECTIONS Mark Laughlin and Shani Tzoref Jerusalem 4Q1771 has conventionally been classified as a “thematic pesher,”2 or, more recently as “thematic commentary,”3 or “eschatological midrash.”4 It is one of a group of Qumranic compositions in which the author cites and interprets biblical texts, applying them to the contemporary experience of his community, which he understands to be living in the eschatological era. Unlike the continuous pesharim, thematic pesha- rim are not structured as sequential commentaries on a particular 1 John M. 1 Jesus Christ, the Key of David Isaiah 22:15-25 Introduction: In Isaiah 22, the Lord sent Isaiah to make an announcement to a government official named Shebna, who served Hezekiah, the king of Judah. The news he had for Shebna was not good. Shebna had, apparently, used his position to increase his own wealth and glory, and had usurped authority which did not belong to him. Shebna received the news that he would soon be abruptly removed from his office. Isaiah also announced that another man (named Eliakim) would take his place, who would administer the office faithfully. This new man would be a type of Jesus Christ. Isaiah 22:15-25 I. The fall of self-serving Shebna (vv. 15-19) In verse 15, the Lord sent Isaiah to deliver a message to Shebna, who was the treasurer in the government of Judah. He is also described as being “over the house.” This particular position was first mentioned in the time of Solomon. (Apparently, the office did not exist in the days of King Saul or King David, because it is not mentioned.) Afterward, it became an important office both in the northern and southern kingdoms. 1 Kings 4:1-6; 16:9; 18:3 2 Kings 10:5 The office of the man who was “over the house” of the king of Judah seems to have increased in importance over time, until it was similar to the Egyptian office of vizier. Joseph had been given this incredibly powerful position in the government of Pharaoh. (In fact, this position seems to have been created, for the first time, in Joseph’s day.) Joseph possessed all the power of the Pharaoh.
