in the MiamiValley History Offke Aeronautical Systems Center Air Force Materiel Command ii FOREWORD Less than one hundred years ago, Lord Kelvin, the most prominent scientist of his generation, remarked that he had not “the smallest molecule of faith’ in any form of flight other than ballooning. Within a decade of his damningly pessimistic statement, the Wright brothers were routinely puttering through the skies above Huffman Prairie, pirouetting about in their frail pusher biplanes. They were there because, unlike Kelvin, they saw opportunity, not difficulty, challenge, not impossibility. And they had met that challenge, seized that opportunity, by taking the work of their minds, transforming it by their hands, making a series of gliders and, then, finally, an actual airplane that they flew. Flight testing was the key to their success. The history of flight testing encompassesthe essential history of aviation itself. For as long as humanity has aspired to fly, men and women of courage have moved resolutely from intriguing concept to practical reality by testing the result of their work in actual flight. In the eighteenth and nineteenth century, notable pioneers such asthe French Montgolfier brothers, the German Otto Lilienthal, and the American Octave Chanute blended careful study and theoretical speculation with the actual design, construction, and testing of flying vehicles. Flight testing reallycame ofage with the Wright bro!hers whocarefullycombined a thorough understanding of the problem and potentiality of flight with-for their time-sophisticated ground and flight-test methodolo- gies and equipment. After their success above the dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17,1903, the brothers determined to refine their work and generate practical aircraft capable of routine operation. -

Cowart, May 12, 1932 Since the early 1900s, the U.S. military had been fascinated with the potential of lighter-than-air aircraft. Between the world wars, U.S. Navy built several huge, helium-filled airships. But despite years of experience in airship construction, the dirigibles were risky to fly and often dangerous to land. San Diego would be the scene of a landing tragedy in May 1932. The USS Akron was launched on August 8, 1931, after a christening by the president’s wife, Mrs. Herbert Hoover, at the Goodyear-Zeppelin plant in Akron, Ohio. At 785 feet long and 152 feet tall, the steel-framed Akron was the biggest helium-filled airship ever built. Only the German- built, hydrogen-filled Hindenburg was larger. Called the “Queen of the Skies,” the Akron was flying warship, protected by seven machine guns, and carrying a crew of 89 naval officers and men. Along with her sister ship, the USS Macon, the Akron was designed for reconnaissance--to be the “eyes” of the Pacific fleet. The Akron was also built as a flying aircraft carrier. A remarkable inboard aircraft hanger carried two Sparrowhawk reconnaissance biplanes. The airplanes could be lowered from the dirigible by a “flying trapeze” and then launched into the sky. -

INTRODUCTION AND PROJECT DESCRIPTION The archaeological study of 439 Soledad Street, Salinas, Monterey County, California was requested by R. L. Hastings & Associates, LLC in order to comply with the National Environmental Quality Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) applying Section 106 regulations, as well as California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the City of Salinas regulatory guidelines regarding historic preservation. The project location is identified as Assessor's Parcel Number (APN) 002-354-027, and is depicted on the USGS 7.5' Salinas, California topographic quadrangle map. The project involves the demolition of the existing residence and construction of a new building on the subject parcel. The existing building on the property, built in 1938, was determined to be ineligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and the California Register of Historic Resources (CRHR). -

GEOGHEGAN III Published: October 3, 2006 in the New York Times Science section (Correction Appended) MOSS LANDING, Calif. — It was the largest aircraft ever built in the United States when it was launched by the Navy in 1933. Larger than three 747’s parked nose to tail, almost four times as long as than Howard Hughes’s Spruce Goose and just a few feet short of the Titanic, the U.S.S. Macon was the high-tech wonder of its day. A rigid, lighter-than-air dirigible used by the Navy to extend the scouting range of its fleet, the Macon weighed over 200 tons and had an aluminum alloy skeleton underneath its canvas skin. It was kept aloft by 12 helium-filled gas cells, which, though not flammable and therefore safer than hydrogen, were also more costly and less efficient. The Macon was also the last of its kind when it crashed off California’s Big Sur coast in February 1935. Severe weather caused a massive structural failure in the Macon’s tail section, shearing off its dorsal fin and puncturing two of its helium gas cells. -

Banner Images from September Issue The bridge was the Fraser River Bridge designed by C. Conrad Schneider, President of the ASCE in 1905. It was designed prior to the Niagara Cantilever Bridge by Schneider but the Niagara Bridge was built first due to the late delivery of the iron that had to be shipped from England for the Fraser River Bridge. The two bridges were the first cantilever bridges with a suspended span between the two river piers. A cantilever Fraser River Cantilever, 1884 to 1910 was chosen, as it was impossible to place falsework in the river upon which to build a simple span truss bridge. The Fraser River Bridge finally opened in 1884. It was removed in 1910 and rebuilt over the Niagara Creek and is now called the Frisco Bridge. Charles C. Schneider, President ASCE 1905 The engineer was George S. Morison, President ASCE 1895. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1842 and attended Phillips Exeter and Harvard University. He trained to be a lawyer and was admitted to the Bar but chose to pursue a career in civil engineering. His first position was with Octave Chanute on the construction of the Missouri River Bridge. He followed Chanute to the Erie Railroad, which was upgrading its track and bridges. After a fire destroyed the Portage Bridge across the Genesee Gorge near Rochester, he replaced it with an iron bridge within 86 days. -

Chapter 1: The Physical Setting Regions and Landforms: Let's take a trip The land surface of California covers almost 100 million acres. It's the third largest of the states; only Alaska and Texas are larger. Within this vast area are a greater range of landforms, a greater variety of habitats, and more species of plants and animals than in any area of comparable size in all of North America. California Coast The coastline of California stretches for 1,264 miles from the Oregon border in the north to Mexico in the south. Some of the most breathtaking scenery in all of California lies along the Pacific coast. More than half of California's people reside in the coastal region. Most live in major cities that grew up around harbors at San Francisco Bay, San Diego Bay and the Los Angeles Basin. San Francisco Bay San Francisco Bay, one of the finest natural harbors in the world, covers some 450 square miles. It is two hundred feet deep at some points, but about two-thirds is less than twelve feet deep. The bay region, the only real break in the coastal mountains, is the ancestral homeland of the Ohlone and Coast Miwok Indians. It became the gateway for newcomers heading to the state's interior in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Tourism today is San Francisco's leading industry. San Diego Bay A variety of Yuman-speaking people have lived for thousands of years around the shores of San Diego Bay. European settlement began in 1769 with the arrival of the first Spanish missionaries.
