He was the founder and long-time chairman of the unique ethnic association known as “Polish American Ethnological Society” (PAES), headquartered in Atlantic City, NJ. Founded in 1976, the Society has played a signifi cant role in the promotion of interests and research on indigenous peoples of the both Americas. Andrew Wala, as a Polish immigrant, by education historian, and a per- son interested in Americanistic issues, has gathered people with similar interests around him. With great passion and commitment he supported American Indian studies, especially research projects related to the history and culture of indigenous peoples; he successfully built cooperation ties between Polish, Polish-American and American researchers, he also made friendly contacts with chiefs, leaders and intel- lectuals representing the First Americans. As the president of PAES, he helped and supported the projects developed by young researchers from Poland: ethnologists, anthropologists, historians and archaeologists. At the same time, he was building a network of cooperation between pro- fessional researchers and amateurs interested in the history and culture of Ameri- ca's indigenous people. He was also an ardent defender of Indian rights, and in his numerous lectures, essays and publications he oft en expressed that position in a ra- dical form, accentuating the tragic fate of the Native Americans. Th e association he founded and successfully managed for many years, has been in fact an exceptional organization in the Polish immigrant community in the U.S., because its profi le was not directed towards immigration issues, but centered at culture, history and con- temporary condition of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. For achieving these 6 goals Andrew Wala co-organized numerous seminars, conferences and debates in the U.S. and Poland. Th e papers delivered during these meetings were published in three proceeding volumes, of which the editor-in chief was also Andrew Wala. His serious interests in American Indian studies were shaped during his student years at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, back in the 1970s. At that time he was one of the young enthusiasts of American Indian studies and joined one of the fi rst association in Poland dealing with Americanistic issues, which functio- ned as the autonomous section in the framework of the Polish Ethnological Society. Even before his departure to the U.S., he participated in pioneering Americanistic Seminars organized in the city of Poznań by the recognized professor of ethnology - Maria Frankowska, an outstanding specialist in studies on indigenous Mexico and Peru, and one of the fi rst academician in Poland building Latin American studies. In those years, I had the opportunity to get to know Andrew Wala as a pro- mising young historian, very much interested in matters of indigenous America. At that time, I could not suppose that in his new country of residence he would create a unique association that would pursue his early academic interests. Undoubtedly, this unusual initiative was an expression of his genuine passion, successfully im- plemented, in spite of the usual diffi culties, he encountered as a newcomer to the United States, struggling every day for a better condition of life. Th ese early passions and experiences developed before migration, transplanted Andrew Wala to the new country, only a few years aft er his departure from Poland in 1972. However, throughout his entire life he maintained lively contacts with Po- lish academicians from the universities of Cracow, Warsaw, Poznań, and Toruń. He also established useful relationships with a group of Polish enthusiasts and people interested in American

Assembling States: Community Formation And The meE rgence Of The Inca Empire Abstract This dissertation investigates the processes through which the Inca state emerged in the south-central Andes, ca. 1400 CE in Cusco, Peru, an area that was to become the political center of the largest indigenous empire in the Western hemisphere. Many approaches to this topic over the past several decades have framed state formation in a social evolutionary framework, a perspective that has come under increasing critique in recent years. I argue that theoretical attempts to overcome these problems have been ultimately confounded, and in order to resolve these contradictions, an ontological shift is needed. I adopt a relational perspective towards approaching the emergence of the Inca state – in particular, that of assemblage theory. Treating states and other complex social entities as assemblages means understanding them as open-ended and historically individuated phenomena, emerging from centuries or millennia of sociopolitical, cultural, and material engagements with the human and non-human world, and constituted over the longue durée.

Ranging from the earliest cities in the Americas to Inca metropolises, millennia of urban human history along the Andes have left large and striking sites scattered across the country. But cities and monuments do not exist in solitude. Peru’s ancient sites are connected by a vast circulatory system of roads that connected every corner of the country, and thousands of square miles beyond its current borders. The Inca road system, or Qhapaq Ñan, is particularly famous; thousands of miles of trails linked the empire from modern- day Colombia to central Chile, crossing some of the world’s tallest mountain ranges and driest deserts. The Inca state recognized the importance of its road system, and dotted the trails with rest stops, granaries, and religious shrines. Inca roads even served directly religious purposes in pilgrimages and a system of ritual pathways that divided the empire (Ogburn 2010). This project contributes to scholarly knowledge about the Inca and Pre-Hispanic Andean civilizations by studying the roads which stitched together the Inca state.
